Episode Transcript
Back in the book of Joshua this morning.
00:00.000 --> 00:04.000
Morning Danny.
00:04.000 --> 00:08.000
Probably chapter 3 or 4.
00:08.000 --> 00:12.000
Let's go to chapter 3.
00:12.000 --> 00:16.000
We're going to be in several chapters this morning.
00:16.000 --> 00:20.000
Let's go to chapter 3.
00:20.000 --> 00:23.000
We're going to be in several chapters this morning.
00:23.000 --> 00:28.000
Let's start in chapter 3.
00:48.000 --> 00:51.000
We'll end up a few chapters further than where we are this morning.
00:51.000 --> 00:57.000
So last week we looked at the spies going to the Harlot Rahab's house that sat on the town wall of Jericho.
00:57.000 --> 01:08.000
Rahab was a prostitute.
01:08.000 --> 01:12.000
She's not a godly woman, but you know what?
01:12.000 --> 01:15.000
She came to the place in her life where she realized that God was right.
01:15.000 --> 01:19.000
They were wrong. They deserved judgment.
01:19.000 --> 01:22.000
God was the one true God.
01:22.000 --> 01:24.000
So she turned her back on her native country so that she could receive and be accepted by the one true God in the country that he ruled.
01:24.000 --> 01:37.000
And so thank God that even though we may have a terrible past like Rahab,
01:37.000 --> 01:47.000
God will accept anyone who accepts Him and believes in the promise of the Gospel.
01:47.000 --> 01:55.000
So we're in chapter 3 this morning and what we've got to do,
01:55.000 --> 02:01.000
we've got to get Israel into the Promised Land as a nation now.
02:01.000 --> 02:06.000
And they sent spies over there twice.
02:06.000 --> 02:08.000
Now they've got to get the whole nation in.
02:08.000 --> 02:11.000
And so what we're going to do is get them across this Jordan River.
02:11.000 --> 02:18.000
Here we go. That's a little bigger.
02:18.000 --> 02:20.000
You can see the Jordan River flows down here and it goes down into the Dead Sea.
02:20.000 --> 02:25.000
Still does, by the way.
02:25.000 --> 02:28.000
But they had to cross this Jordan River to get over here into the main area of the Promised Land.
02:28.000 --> 02:35.000
They're going to conquer Jericho first, okay, and drive them out and destroy them.
02:35.000 --> 02:43.000
Now to get across that Jordan River is going to be an ordeal because it's the time of year where Jordan's banks are overflowed.
02:43.000 --> 02:56.000
So it's a strong river current and you can't cross two million people over there.
02:56.000 --> 03:03.000
That's somebody drowning, cattle being washed away or whatever they've got.
03:03.000 --> 03:08.000
And so it's going to take a miracle to get these people across.
03:08.000 --> 03:15.000
And I'm sure that the people on the other side, especially Jericho,
03:15.000 --> 03:19.000
I'm sure they thought that that river would provide them some type of protection, you know,
03:19.000 --> 03:25.000
a strong boundary to keep Israel out of their way, at least for the time until it receded later in the year.
03:25.000 --> 03:35.000
Let's go ahead and look here now, if you would, and go to chapter 3, verse 1.
03:35.000 --> 03:44.000
"And Joshua rose early in the morning and they removed from Shittim and came to Jordan.
03:44.000 --> 03:50.000
He and all the children of Israel and lodged there before they passed over."
03:50.000 --> 03:55.000
So they're on the other side of the Jordan River and they stay there.
03:55.000 --> 04:00.000
And verse 2, "And it came to pass after three days that the officers went through the host,
04:00.000 --> 04:05.000
and they commanded the people, saying, 'When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God
04:05.000 --> 04:10.000
and the priest the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place and go after it.'"
04:10.000 --> 04:17.000
All right? So they've got to get across, and this is the instruction so far.
04:17.000 --> 04:23.000
Remember, the ark of the covenant has those poles that they're going to carry like this.
04:23.000 --> 04:29.000
So they all tell the people, all the leaders tell the people,
04:29.000 --> 04:34.000
"When you see the Levites put the ark of the covenant, that box with the mercy seat on it,
04:34.000 --> 04:41.000
when you see them march across and head toward this Jordan River with that mercy seat
04:41.000 --> 04:49.000
in that ark of the covenant, you get up and you follow them."
04:49.000 --> 04:53.000
That's the instructions. You're going to follow that ark of the covenant.
04:53.000 --> 04:58.000
And the reason this is happening is because God's showing them the only way
04:58.000 --> 05:05.000
that you can get across and you can conquer this land and be victorious is not through your own strength,
05:05.000 --> 05:14.000
but through the covenant or the promise that I've made you, and through the mercy that I've given you
05:14.000 --> 05:19.000
through the mercy seat. Not by your work, but by my mercy and grace will you be able to accomplish this.
05:19.000 --> 05:28.000
God's going to do the work. God's going to win the battle. They're going to enjoy the victory that God wins,
05:28.000 --> 05:36.000
so they're going to be victorious in him.
05:36.000 --> 05:38.000
So they're fighting from the point of victory, not fighting for victory.
05:38.000 --> 05:43.000
They're fighting from the point of victory because God's already promised them victory.
05:43.000 --> 05:48.000
Now let's go ahead and look here now. Verse 4, "Yet there shall be a space between you and it,
05:48.000 --> 05:55.000
about two thousand cubits by measure, come not near unto it, that you may know the way by which you must go,
05:55.000 --> 06:02.000
for you have not passed this way heretofore." So he says, "Now don't get too close to it."
06:02.000 --> 06:09.000
Remember, no one can even touch it, remember?
06:09.000 --> 06:12.000
In fact, whenever they carried it, they had to take that veil, that curtain that separated the holy place
06:12.000 --> 06:19.000
and the most holy place, they had to cover that with the curtain, and nobody could touch it.
06:19.000 --> 06:24.000
All right? So keep your distance, but follow it. You've got to follow it because you don't know where you're going.
06:24.000 --> 06:30.000
You've got to follow this ark of the covenant. It kind of reminds us of living life today, doesn't it?
06:30.000 --> 06:37.000
We're going to have victory through Jesus, and we don't know where we're going in life.
06:37.000 --> 06:44.000
We don't know what our purpose is apart from following him and his word, right?
06:44.000 --> 06:50.000
So that's what we see here. That's where victory comes from.
06:50.000 --> 06:54.000
Let's go ahead and look here now in verse 5.
06:54.000 --> 06:59.000
"And Joshua said unto the people, 'Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.'
06:59.000 --> 07:06.000
And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, 'Take up the ark of the covenant and pass over before or in front of the people,
07:06.000 --> 07:13.000
ahead of the people.' And they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.
07:13.000 --> 07:18.000
And the Lord said unto Joshua, 'This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know,
07:18.000 --> 07:24.000
that as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.'"
07:24.000 --> 07:27.000
What did God do with Moses? Man, he opened that red sea up and let them go across.
07:27.000 --> 07:32.000
What's God going to do with Joshua? He's about to open that river up and let them go across.
07:32.000 --> 07:38.000
And they're going to know, hey, God was with Moses, God is with Joshua, and we're going to follow Joshua's words as well.
07:38.000 --> 07:47.000
Let's look here now in verse 8. "And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying,
07:47.000 --> 07:54.000
'When you come to the brink of the water of Jordan, or that is the edge of the river, ye shall stand still in Jordan.'
07:54.000 --> 08:05.000
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, 'Come hither and hear the words of the Lord your God.'
08:05.000 --> 08:10.000
And Joshua said, 'Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail.
08:10.000 --> 08:16.000
He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites
08:16.000 --> 08:21.000
and the Parazites and the Gergesites and the Amorites and the Jebusites.'"
08:21.000 --> 08:25.000
Who's going to drive them out? God will. God will. It's God's work.
08:25.000 --> 08:31.000
Verse 11, "Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth, passeth over before you into Jordan.
08:31.000 --> 08:38.000
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe of man.
08:38.000 --> 08:45.000
And it shall come to pass as soon as the souls of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord,
08:45.000 --> 08:51.000
the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, but the waters of Jordan shall be cut off
08:51.000 --> 08:57.000
from the waters that come down from above, and they shall stand upon and heap."
08:57.000 --> 09:03.000
Alright? So here's what's going to happen.
09:03.000 --> 09:05.000
The priests are going to have the ark of the covenant carrying it with these staves,
09:05.000 --> 09:10.000
and they're going to be in front of all the people.
09:10.000 --> 09:13.000
We're talking about a very powerful swollen river at this time, and they're going to step right off into it,
09:13.000 --> 09:19.000
carrying this ark. And as soon as their feet start going down into that water,
09:19.000 --> 09:24.000
they're going to go out in the middle of that river, and they're just going to stand there.
09:24.000 --> 09:28.000
And God says, "When that happens, the water's going to cut off. It's just going to stop.
09:28.000 --> 09:35.000
It won't be any more flowing past those priests.
09:35.000 --> 09:38.000
You're going to have dry ground, and the water's going to start stacking up.
09:38.000 --> 09:43.000
As it comes, it's just going to start stacking up, piling up like a dam,
09:43.000 --> 09:49.000
until they get over and then it'll all go across. Alright?
09:49.000 --> 09:53.000
So let's go ahead and look here now.
09:53.000 --> 09:57.000
Verse 14, "It came to pass when the people removed from their tents to pass over Jordan,
09:57.000 --> 10:03.000
the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people.
10:03.000 --> 10:06.000
And as they that bear the ark were come unto Jordan,
10:06.000 --> 10:10.000
and the feet of the priests that bear the ark were dipped in the brim of the water,
10:10.000 --> 10:15.000
for Jordan overfloeth all his banks all the time of harvest,
10:15.000 --> 10:19.000
that the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam,
10:19.000 --> 10:28.000
that is, besides Zertan, and those that came down toward the sea of the plain,
10:28.000 --> 10:35.000
and even the salt sea, that's what we call the Dead Sea, failed and were cut off.
10:35.000 --> 10:40.000
And the people passed over right against Jericho."
10:40.000 --> 10:46.000
Isn't that amazing?
10:46.000 --> 10:48.000
As soon as they got in there with an ark of the covenant, boom, water's cut off.
10:48.000 --> 10:55.000
It's amazing. They cut off.
10:55.000 --> 10:58.000
It says here, if you'll look back in verse 16,
10:58.000 --> 11:07.000
"that the waters which came down from above and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam."
11:07.000 --> 11:16.000
I think it's very interesting.
11:16.000 --> 11:17.000
This is a picture of Adam and his sin and death that's passed down to his descendants.
11:17.000 --> 11:27.000
Because the river Jordan in Hebrew means a descender, one that descends.
11:27.000 --> 11:34.000
And so here you've got Adam and you've got a river that means to descend
11:34.000 --> 11:42.000
and the ark of the covenant dips into that river and cuts off the descendants of Adam, so to speak.
11:42.000 --> 11:50.000
There's no descending from Adam. It's cut completely off.
11:50.000 --> 11:53.000
And they're able to go right across because that's the boundary,
11:53.000 --> 11:58.000
that's the roadblock that keeps us from entering into the Promised Land is our descendancy from Adam.
11:58.000 --> 12:06.000
There's a city named Adam here, but it just so happened that the way this worked out,
12:06.000 --> 12:12.000
God used it as an illustration to show that his mercy, the blood that the coming Savior would shed,
12:12.000 --> 12:21.000
that provided us mercy, illustrated in this mercy seat which dips down into the descending river,
12:21.000 --> 12:28.000
which by the way descends from Adam and goes to where? The Dead Sea. And Adam all die.
12:28.000 --> 12:36.000
And so here they go off into that river and boom, it's cut off and they're able to go right across.
12:36.000 --> 12:43.000
Why? Not because they were good swimmers, but because of the mercy seat that entered into that river
12:43.000 --> 12:55.000
and they're able to go across. Let's go ahead and look here now if you would.
12:55.000 --> 13:01.000
Chapter 4. And it came to pass when all the people were clean, passed over Jordan,
13:01.000 --> 13:08.000
that the Lord spake unto Joshua saying, "Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe of man,
13:08.000 --> 13:15.000
and command you them, take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priest's feet stood firm,
13:15.000 --> 13:23.000
twelve stones, and you shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where you shall lodge this night."
13:23.000 --> 13:29.000
And so what's going to happen now, they're going to each take twelve stones, one for each tribe,
13:29.000 --> 13:34.000
they're going to come and they're going to make a stack of these stones that came out of the river.
13:34.000 --> 13:39.000
Now what are stones from the river doing out on the bank? They're going to become a memorial
13:39.000 --> 13:46.000
so that in the future when their descendants came and they looked and they saw all these stones next to this river
13:46.000 --> 13:54.000
in this heap, they'd say, "What are these stones all about? How come these are stacked up like this?
13:54.000 --> 14:00.000
Oh, let me tell you what happened. Man, when we were coming, or as generations go, when our grandparents were coming
14:00.000 --> 14:07.000
or what have you, and God opened this river up for them and here they stuck this there to remind us that this is how they got across
14:07.000 --> 14:14.000
and this is how God loves us. This is how God keeps His promises."
14:14.000 --> 14:20.000
And so they made that memorial. Now let's go ahead and look here if you would and get into chapter 5.
14:20.000 --> 14:31.000
Look here if you would in verse 8.
14:31.000 --> 14:43.000
"And it came to pass when they had done circumcising all the people that they abode in their places in the camp till they were whole.
14:43.000 --> 14:50.000
And the Lord said unto Joshua, 'This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you,
14:50.000 --> 14:55.000
wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.'
14:55.000 --> 15:00.000
And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month
15:00.000 --> 15:07.000
at even in the plains of Jericho, which is what I want you to see.
15:07.000 --> 15:13.000
They're living in the enemy's land, which God has given them, but still occupied by enemies.
15:13.000 --> 15:19.000
Yet here they are celebrating the Passover.
15:19.000 --> 15:23.000
The Passover is what God allowed them to get out of Egypt.
15:23.000 --> 15:27.000
The Passover is what allowed them to go through the Red Sea.
15:27.000 --> 15:31.000
The Passover was the reason, and of course just as there was blood on the mercy seat, there was blood on their door.
15:31.000 --> 15:38.000
They got out of Egypt through the blood that was shed for them.
15:38.000 --> 15:42.000
They got across the River Jordan through the blood that was shed for them.
15:42.000 --> 15:47.000
And now they're about to go to war, but before they do, they're going to celebrate the blood that was shed for them.
15:47.000 --> 15:55.000
And how are they going to win this battle? Through the blood that was shed for them.
15:55.000 --> 15:59.000
It's the same way we live victorious as believers in Christ today, through the blood that is shed for us and faith in that.
15:59.000 --> 16:08.000
Never, ever forget that. The devil is always going to try to get your mind off of what God has done for us in Christ,
16:08.000 --> 16:19.000
what God will continue to do for us in Christ.
16:19.000 --> 16:22.000
He'll try to get our mind back on what we can do for ourselves in our failures and how miserable we are.
16:22.000 --> 16:28.000
All right. Let's go ahead and look here now in verse 11.
16:28.000 --> 16:33.000
"And they did eat the old corn of the land on the morrow after the Passover, unleavened cakes and parched corn in the selfsame day."
16:33.000 --> 16:44.000
Watch this in verse 12, very important.
16:44.000 --> 16:46.000
"And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land.
16:46.000 --> 16:52.000
Neither had the children of Israel manna anymore, but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year."
16:52.000 --> 16:59.000
We've got a change of location. Now we have a change of diet, a change of diet.
16:59.000 --> 17:06.000
No more manna. Manna's ended.
17:06.000 --> 17:10.000
So after they eat the Passover and they get across this river, Jordan, they've now grown in their Christian walk, you see.
17:10.000 --> 17:18.000
They're no longer these new Christians, so to speak, that just come out of Egypt.
17:18.000 --> 17:25.000
They're no longer the people struggling through the wilderness.
17:25.000 --> 17:28.000
They now have graduated and gotten to a place in Canaan where they've got fruit of the land there.
17:28.000 --> 17:33.000
They're able to eat things that they couldn't eat before because of what God's accomplished for them in their life.
17:33.000 --> 17:40.000
And they're following him into that land all the way and trusting him.
17:40.000 --> 17:44.000
And so now the manna stops and God doesn't give them manna anymore.
17:44.000 --> 17:49.000
They've got a change of diet. Now they're going to be eating grapes. Now they're going to be eating corn.
17:49.000 --> 17:54.000
Now they're going to be eating wheat and barley and all kinds of good things that that land provides.
17:54.000 --> 18:03.000
And the manna's over with.
18:03.000 --> 18:05.000
When we are born, we eat milk, we eat baby food, we eat things that are easy to digest.
18:05.000 --> 18:17.000
The manna was a picture of the Savior coming down from heaven to give life unto the world.
18:17.000 --> 18:25.000
We've looked at that before in John chapter 6.
18:25.000 --> 18:28.000
Jesus explained, "I am that bread that came down from heaven that man eats, he won't die."
18:28.000 --> 18:34.000
We thank God for that. But you know what I see?
18:34.000 --> 18:37.000
And the reason this is here in the book of Joshua is there's a lot of people,
18:37.000 --> 18:42.000
they just have trouble moving away from the baby food.
18:42.000 --> 18:46.000
They're always wanting to remind themselves, "I'm saved because Jesus died for my sins."
18:46.000 --> 18:52.000
That's wonderful. And that's always true. We praise God for that.
18:52.000 --> 18:56.000
But we need to grow as well.
18:56.000 --> 18:59.000
Not just sit here and remind ourselves over and over again, "Jesus died for me, salvation is by grace through faith."
18:59.000 --> 19:06.000
There comes a time when you've got to move from that and change your diet.
19:06.000 --> 19:10.000
And quit just drinking milk and eating baby food all the time.
19:10.000 --> 19:14.000
Baby food is great if you're a baby, but none of us are going to leave here today and go out to a restaurant
19:14.000 --> 19:20.000
and order pureed fruit or squash or something like that.
19:20.000 --> 19:24.000
That's gross. So we want strong meat now.
19:24.000 --> 19:30.000
We want a steak, we want potatoes, we want whole vegetables that we can chew and enjoy.
19:30.000 --> 19:38.000
And so this is a picture of that. They're still eating corn, they're still eating all these things.
19:38.000 --> 19:47.000
Remember when they came to Egypt and they ate corn that Joseph had?
19:47.000 --> 19:51.000
That was whole food, but it was still a picture of Jesus, you see.
19:51.000 --> 19:57.000
You never move away from feeding on Jesus, but you've got to learn more about Jesus
19:57.000 --> 20:03.000
because there's a whole buffet in the doctrines of Christ.
20:03.000 --> 20:08.000
There's steak in the doctrines of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
20:08.000 --> 20:12.000
There's meat and potatoes and vegetables in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
20:12.000 --> 20:16.000
And we need to learn more about Him and grow in Him and get away from the baby food
20:16.000 --> 20:24.000
because going to the steak, the meat and potatoes, it never takes away the gospel of Christ,
20:24.000 --> 20:31.000
but it builds on it. It gives you more nourishment than you had before.
20:31.000 --> 20:36.000
So instead of just surviving in the gospel, you can build and grow and thrive in the gospel.
20:36.000 --> 20:43.000
That's what this is a picture of. So let's go ahead and look here now, if you would,
20:43.000 --> 20:49.000
in chapter 5 verse 13.
20:49.000 --> 20:55.000
"And it came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho."
20:55.000 --> 20:59.000
Now they haven't fought yet. They're preparing for war.
20:59.000 --> 21:03.000
"He's by Jericho that he lifted up his eyes and looked,
21:03.000 --> 21:06.000
and behold there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand."
21:06.000 --> 21:11.000
So here's Joshua. He's out by himself. He's thinking,
21:11.000 --> 21:16.000
"Man, we're about to go into battle. How are we going to do this? You know?
21:16.000 --> 21:21.000
How are we going to win this battle? They've got this big wall up here.
21:21.000 --> 21:25.000
I know God's going to win the victory for us. How are we going to do it?"
21:25.000 --> 21:29.000
He's out here thinking. He's praying, I'm sure.
21:29.000 --> 21:32.000
And suddenly he looks up and he's startled.
21:32.000 --> 21:35.000
There's a man there with a sword in his hand.
21:35.000 --> 21:39.000
That's a pretty good sword. There's a sword in his hand.
21:39.000 --> 21:43.000
Joshua's startled. Let's see what Joshua says.
21:43.000 --> 21:47.000
He says, "And Joshua went unto him."
21:47.000 --> 21:50.000
Joshua didn't run away. He went over to him and said unto him,
21:50.000 --> 21:53.000
"Are thou for us or for our adversaries?" He said, "Hey, whose side are you on?
21:53.000 --> 21:59.000
Are you on our side or are you on our enemy's side?"
21:59.000 --> 22:01.000
Because Joshua's about to have battle if he's on the enemy's side.
22:01.000 --> 22:05.000
Because he sees the sword up.
22:05.000 --> 22:09.000
Let's see what the man tells Joshua. Verse 14, "And he said, 'Nay.'
22:09.000 --> 22:14.000
He said, 'No, I'm not either. I'm not on your side. I'm not on their side.
22:14.000 --> 22:19.000
But as captain of the host of the Lord, am I now come?'"
22:19.000 --> 22:24.000
He said, "Oh, no, no. I'm not on your side. I'm not on their side.
22:24.000 --> 22:29.000
I'm the captain of the army of God. I am the leader of this army."
22:29.000 --> 22:34.000
Do you know who this was? Who? It was Jesus. Exactly right.
22:34.000 --> 22:39.000
Very good, Gabriel. This was, this was, any time you see God manifested in the form of a man,
22:39.000 --> 22:49.000
it's always the second person in the Godhead. It's always Jesus Christ, okay?
22:49.000 --> 22:56.000
This is before he's named Jesus, but this is God. Just like any time you see Richard,
22:56.000 --> 23:05.000
any time you see me, you're seeing my body. That's a given.
23:05.000 --> 23:10.000
Any time you see, any time God is manifested to man, you're seeing the Son, okay?
23:10.000 --> 23:19.000
You're seeing the second person in the Godhead.
23:19.000 --> 23:23.000
And so look what Joshua did. "And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and did worship,
23:23.000 --> 23:29.000
and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?"
23:29.000 --> 23:33.000
So here's the captain of the army right here.
23:33.000 --> 23:37.000
And so Joshua just gets on his face, and he worships.
23:37.000 --> 23:43.000
"What say my Lord to his service?" In other words, "Captain, watch your orders.
23:43.000 --> 23:48.000
Watch your orders." And that's what we have to do too. We've got to learn, man,
23:48.000 --> 23:53.000
the one winning the battle is the Lord Jesus Christ, and here he is ready to win.
23:53.000 --> 24:01.000
So you know what you see here? This is very interesting.
24:01.000 --> 24:04.000
Remember, Joshua is the Old Testament name for Jesus.
24:04.000 --> 24:09.000
So you see the picture of Christ and Christ himself talking to each other.
24:09.000 --> 24:16.000
Isn't that the coolest thing? It's the coolest thing.
24:16.000 --> 24:19.000
Let's go ahead and look here now in chapter 6. I'm sorry.
24:19.000 --> 24:25.000
I'm sorry, verse 15. "And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua,
24:25.000 --> 24:29.000
Loose thy shoe from all thy foot, for the place whereon thou standest is holy."
24:29.000 --> 24:33.000
And Joshua did so. The reason I want to read that right there is because
24:33.000 --> 24:37.000
that's the same thing that Jesus told Moses at Mount Sinai.
24:37.000 --> 24:42.000
"Take your sandals off your feet, the place you're standing on is holy ground."
24:42.000 --> 24:45.000
Joshua is talking to the same one that was talking to Moses and the burning bush,
24:45.000 --> 24:53.000
and it's been Jesus the whole time. Let's go ahead and look here now in chapter 6.
24:53.000 --> 24:58.000
"Now Jericho was straightly shut up because of the children of Israel.
24:58.000 --> 25:02.000
None went out, none came in." In other words, they'd unlocked the city down.
25:02.000 --> 25:08.000
Just like if we have an active shooter, you lock the place down.
25:08.000 --> 25:10.000
They'd unlocked Jericho down. No one's going out. No one's coming in,
25:10.000 --> 25:14.000
because we know war is coming from the children of Israel.
25:14.000 --> 25:18.000
Verse 2, "And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given unto thine hand Jericho,
25:18.000 --> 25:23.000
and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.
25:23.000 --> 25:26.000
And ye shall come pass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once.
25:26.000 --> 25:31.000
Thus shalt thou do six days." You've got a big wall up here.
25:31.000 --> 25:35.000
He's saying, "Here's how we're going to conquer it.
25:35.000 --> 25:38.000
You're going to walk around this city, the whole city, wall and all, one time,
25:38.000 --> 25:46.000
each day for six days.
25:46.000 --> 25:49.000
Now don't take a battering ram and try to knock the wall down.
25:49.000 --> 25:52.000
You're just going to walk around it. All right? Watch now.
25:52.000 --> 25:56.000
Verse 4, "And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of ram's horns.
25:56.000 --> 26:04.000
And the seventh day ye shall come pass the city seven times,
26:04.000 --> 26:08.000
and the priests shall blow over the trumpets."
26:08.000 --> 26:10.000
You've got priests, seven, which is the perfect number.
26:10.000 --> 26:13.000
You've got the priesthood taking ram's horns
26:13.000 --> 26:19.000
and blowing through these ram's horns.
26:19.000 --> 26:22.000
And on the seventh day instead of walking around the city once,
26:22.000 --> 26:25.000
they're going to walk around it how many times?
26:25.000 --> 26:28.000
Yeah. All right? So let's go ahead and look in verse 5.
26:28.000 --> 26:33.000
"And it shall come to pass that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn,
26:33.000 --> 26:38.000
and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout,
26:38.000 --> 26:43.000
and the wall of the city shall fall down flat,
26:43.000 --> 26:46.000
and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him."
26:46.000 --> 26:50.000
That's the strategy.
26:50.000 --> 26:53.000
You just walk around once a day, "Booooo!"
26:53.000 --> 26:58.000
The priests blow the victory, "Boooo!"
26:58.000 --> 27:00.000
And walk around another day, do that six days, seven days, go around seven times.
27:00.000 --> 27:05.000
And you know these people are up around the city wall thinking,
27:05.000 --> 27:08.000
"You mean this is their strategy? I mean, we can do this all day, you know?"
27:08.000 --> 27:13.000
Yeah, these guys are crazy.
27:13.000 --> 27:15.000
On that seventh day, the priests blow the horns.
27:15.000 --> 27:17.000
They walk around seven times, which shows a perfect victory through the priesthood of Jesus.
27:17.000 --> 27:23.000
It's the priests blowing the horns, you see.
27:23.000 --> 27:26.000
And it's a ram horn.
27:26.000 --> 27:29.000
A ram is a male lamb.
27:29.000 --> 27:32.000
The horn of a ram is its power, right?
27:32.000 --> 27:35.000
They're blowing through the power of the lamb.
27:35.000 --> 27:39.000
You see what's happening?
27:39.000 --> 27:41.000
Priests declaring victory through the power of the lamb.
27:41.000 --> 27:47.000
And when they do, that seventh time,
27:47.000 --> 27:51.000
as they're blowing through the horn of that lamb,
27:51.000 --> 27:56.000
all the people start shouting for victory before victory has ever come.
27:56.000 --> 28:03.000
And when they're shouting for victory,
28:03.000 --> 28:06.000
it's their way of saying, "Amen. Amen.
28:06.000 --> 28:11.000
We are victorious through the priesthood of our God."
28:11.000 --> 28:16.000
And as they come into agreement with that,
28:16.000 --> 28:19.000
the wall of their enemy falls down.
28:19.000 --> 28:22.000
That's exactly the way it is with us.
28:22.000 --> 28:25.000
Sin, Satan, death, this world has built a great,
28:25.000 --> 28:31.000
what appears to be a formidable wall that we cannot overcome.
28:31.000 --> 28:40.000
But the truth is we have victory through the power of the lamb of God.
28:40.000 --> 28:47.000
And when we come into agreement with that,
28:47.000 --> 28:51.000
and we walk in faith in that,
28:51.000 --> 28:54.000
that's when the walls begin to fall in our lives.
28:54.000 --> 28:58.000
And we see them no longer as this great fortress
28:58.000 --> 29:02.000
that is going to withstand us and we can't overcome,
29:02.000 --> 29:06.000
but it's one that's already been overcome in Jesus Christ.
29:06.000 --> 29:09.000
All right, let's go ahead and look here now if you would.
29:09.000 --> 29:14.000
Verse 6, "And Joshua the son of Nod called the priests
29:14.000 --> 29:17.000
and said unto them, 'Take up the ark of the covenant,
29:17.000 --> 29:20.000
and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of ram's horns
29:20.000 --> 29:25.000
before the ark of the Lord.'"
29:25.000 --> 29:27.000
You know what's happening?
29:27.000 --> 29:28.000
The ark of God's going around.
29:28.000 --> 29:30.000
And the people are following that ark around the city
29:30.000 --> 29:33.000
just like they follow that ark through the River Jordan.
29:33.000 --> 29:37.000
And that's what we do in our life.
29:37.000 --> 29:39.000
We're just following the ark.
29:39.000 --> 29:41.000
We're following the cross of Christ.
29:41.000 --> 29:43.000
We're following our great high priest.
29:43.000 --> 29:45.000
And we're going to follow him through this world
29:45.000 --> 29:47.000
all the way up to heaven.
29:47.000 --> 29:50.000
We're going to follow him all the way back to this earth
29:50.000 --> 29:52.000
when he makes it new.
29:52.000 --> 29:54.000
And we'll be victorious because the Lamb of God has gone before us
29:54.000 --> 29:58.000
and won the victory through the blood he shed.
29:58.000 --> 30:01.000
And we're going to walk in faith in that.
30:01.000 --> 30:06.000
My goodness, I just feel like getting up, going,
30:06.000 --> 30:09.000
let's just dismiss, go over there and start preaching some more.
30:09.000 --> 30:13.000
I tell you what, that's so exciting to me.
30:13.000 --> 30:17.000
So let's look here.
30:17.000 --> 30:20.000
We've got some instructions we've got to see here now.
30:20.000 --> 30:25.000
Verse 11.
30:25.000 --> 30:30.000
"So the ark of the Lord can pass the city going about it once,
30:30.000 --> 30:33.000
and they came into the camp and lodged in the camp,
30:33.000 --> 30:35.000
and Joshua rose early in the morning.
30:35.000 --> 30:37.000
The priest took up the ark of the Lord,
30:37.000 --> 30:39.000
and seven priests bearing seven trumpets of ram's horns
30:39.000 --> 30:41.000
before the ark of the Lord went on continually,
30:41.000 --> 30:44.000
and blew the trumpets and the armed men went before them.
30:44.000 --> 30:47.000
But the rearward came after the ark of the Lord.
30:47.000 --> 30:50.000
The priests going on and blowing with the trumpets,
30:50.000 --> 30:52.000
and the second day they can pass the city once
30:52.000 --> 30:55.000
and return into the camp, and so they did six days.
30:55.000 --> 30:58.000
And it came to pass on the seventh day,"
30:58.000 --> 31:00.000
that's what we've been looking forward to,
31:00.000 --> 31:02.000
"that they rose early about the dawning of the day
31:02.000 --> 31:05.000
and can pass the city after the same men or seven times.
31:05.000 --> 31:09.000
Only on that day they can pass the city seven times.
31:09.000 --> 31:13.000
And it came to pass at the seventh time
31:13.000 --> 31:15.000
when the priests blew the trumpets,
31:15.000 --> 31:17.000
Joshua said unto the people,
31:17.000 --> 31:19.000
'Shout, for the Lord hath given you the city.'"
31:19.000 --> 31:22.000
Let's shout for victory.
31:22.000 --> 31:24.000
We've got the city. We've overcome it in Jesus.
31:24.000 --> 31:26.000
Verse 17, "And the city shall be accursed,"
31:26.000 --> 31:29.000
listen to what he says now.
31:29.000 --> 31:30.000
He's telling them to shout, but here's the rules.
31:30.000 --> 31:32.000
"The city's going to be accursed,
31:32.000 --> 31:34.000
even it and all that are therein, to the Lord.
31:34.000 --> 31:37.000
Only Rahab the harlot shall live,
31:37.000 --> 31:40.000
she and all that are with her in the house," right?
31:40.000 --> 31:42.000
They're going to be behind that red rope.
31:42.000 --> 31:44.000
"Because she hid the messengers that we sent.
31:44.000 --> 31:47.000
And ye, and any wise, keep yourselves from the accursed thing
31:47.000 --> 31:50.000
lest ye make yourselves accursed,
31:50.000 --> 31:52.000
when you take of the accursed thing
31:52.000 --> 31:54.000
and make the camp of Israel accursed and troubled it.
31:54.000 --> 31:56.000
But all the silver and gold and vessels of brass and iron
31:56.000 --> 31:59.000
are consecrated unto the Lord,
31:59.000 --> 32:01.000
and they shall come into the treasure of the Lord."
32:01.000 --> 32:03.000
So here's the thing.
32:03.000 --> 32:04.000
They're going to go in, they're going to destroy the city.
32:04.000 --> 32:09.000
Walls are going to fall, they're going to kill the people.
32:09.000 --> 32:12.000
And all the stuff, the clothes, you know, you're going,
32:12.000 --> 32:18.000
"Oh man, this would look good on the wife back at the house," you know?
32:18.000 --> 32:21.000
The gold, the silver, all that stuff, everything's cursed.
32:21.000 --> 32:26.000
They're not going in to take it and enjoy all the stuff that's in there.
32:26.000 --> 32:33.000
They're going in to execute God's judgment on it.
32:33.000 --> 32:36.000
And so everything's cursed.
32:36.000 --> 32:38.000
Don't take the spoil of war here.
32:38.000 --> 32:41.000
The metal, the precious metal, it's going to go in the treasure of God
32:41.000 --> 32:44.000
and it's going to be, it's going to go to the house of God.
32:44.000 --> 32:48.000
It's not going to be for your keeping. It's all cursed.
32:48.000 --> 32:52.000
If you take it home with you, then you're taking the curse home with you too.
32:52.000 --> 32:57.000
Okay?
32:57.000 --> 32:58.000
And so let's go ahead and, so we're here to beat them.
32:58.000 --> 33:03.000
We're not here to join them.
33:03.000 --> 33:05.000
You see, it's basically what is being said.
33:05.000 --> 33:07.000
All right, so let's go ahead and look here in verse 20.
33:07.000 --> 33:13.000
"So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets,
33:13.000 --> 33:16.000
and it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the trumpet,
33:16.000 --> 33:21.000
and the people shouted with a great shout that the wall fell down flat,
33:21.000 --> 33:25.000
so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him,
33:25.000 --> 33:29.000
and they took the city, and they utterly destroyed all that was in the city,
33:29.000 --> 33:33.000
both man and woman, young and old and ox and sheep, and asked with the edge of the sword.
33:33.000 --> 33:38.000
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country,
33:38.000 --> 33:43.000
Go into the harlot's house and bring out thence the woman and all that she hath,
33:43.000 --> 33:47.000
as you swear unto her, keep your word.
33:47.000 --> 33:50.000
And the young men that were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father
33:50.000 --> 33:54.000
and her mother and her brother and all that she had,
33:54.000 --> 33:57.000
and they brought out all her kindred and left them without the camp of Israel.
33:57.000 --> 34:02.000
They took them on out.
34:02.000 --> 34:05.000
And they burnt the city with fire and all that was therein,
34:05.000 --> 34:09.000
on the silver and the gold and the vessels of brass and of iron
34:09.000 --> 34:12.000
they put into the treasury of the Lord.
34:12.000 --> 34:14.000
And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive,
34:14.000 --> 34:17.000
and her father's household and all that she had,
34:17.000 --> 34:20.000
and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day,"
34:20.000 --> 34:23.000
that's not today, of course, but when this was written,
34:23.000 --> 34:26.000
"because she hid the messengers which Joshua sent to spout Jericho."
34:26.000 --> 34:30.000
Here's what I want you to see, then we're going to close.
34:30.000 --> 34:33.000
"Joshua saved Rahab and all she had,
34:33.000 --> 34:38.000
everybody that believed the good news,
34:38.000 --> 34:42.000
that if they would get in that room,
34:42.000 --> 34:45.000
believe first that they were guilty, they were deserving of God's judgment,
34:45.000 --> 34:50.000
but if they'll go get in the room with Rahab and hide behind that red rope,
34:50.000 --> 34:55.000
then when judgment came they would be saved.
34:55.000 --> 34:58.000
And Rahab had a lot of family that believed, they said, "We'll take that."
34:58.000 --> 35:04.000
Now all the people in the Promised Land were doomed for destruction,
35:04.000 --> 35:10.000
but those that believed God's covenant and accepted as their own,
35:10.000 --> 35:17.000
Joshua saved them too.
35:17.000 --> 35:19.000
Even Gentile Harlot and her family,
35:19.000 --> 35:22.000
and not only did he save them, but where did they end up living?
35:22.000 --> 35:26.000
Right along with Israelites, they were part of the family of God.
35:26.000 --> 35:30.000
That tells us, being a picture of Jesus, Joshua's a picture of Jesus,
35:30.000 --> 35:37.000
that shows us that God's plan is not only to save Jews, but Gentiles as well.
35:37.000 --> 35:46.000
Not only to save those that are living a good moral life,
35:46.000 --> 35:49.000
but those that have had the history of living a terrible, sinful life,
35:49.000 --> 35:53.000
if they'll understand they're wrong, repent, and accept God's promise of salvation
35:53.000 --> 36:00.000
through the covenant that he's made and the blood that shed.
36:00.000 --> 36:04.000
And that's why we're here as a church today, as Gentiles,
36:04.000 --> 36:09.000
because we believe that promise for ourselves,
36:09.000 --> 36:12.000
and Joshua has saved us through the blood that he shed on the cross.
36:12.000 --> 36:17.000
And I'm saying Joshua because it's the same name.
36:17.000 --> 36:20.000
And we're all part of God's family as well.
36:20.000 --> 36:24.000
It's such a beautiful story, amazing picture of the victory that we have
36:24.000 --> 36:30.000
in the Lord Jesus Christ, and how nice of him to show up before the battle.
36:30.000 --> 36:36.000
He said, "I'm captain of the host of the Lord."
36:36.000 --> 36:39.000
He was the ram's horns being blown.
36:39.000 --> 36:42.000
He was the priest walking around the building.
36:42.000 --> 36:45.000
He was the mercy seat going around.
36:45.000 --> 36:47.000
He was the one that caused the walls to fall down.
36:47.000 --> 36:51.000
He is our everything.
36:51.000 --> 36:54.000
All right?
36:54.000 --> 36:55.000
Well, the Bible says, "In him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells."
36:55.000 --> 36:59.000
Well, that will go ahead and save us.
36:59.000 --> 37:00.000
