So last week we looked at the manna. 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,500 We looked at God bringing them through that wilderness, 00:00:06,500 --> 00:00:12,300 testing them to see if they would listen to His Word, 00:00:12,300 --> 00:00:16,200 showing them that, "Look, I'm bringing you into a place that has nothing to sustain you." 00:00:16,200 --> 00:00:23,500 They got out of Egypt by nothing but the power of God. 00:00:23,500 --> 00:00:27,000 They were there for 400 years. 00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:29,400 If they could have gotten themselves out on their own, they would have in that 400 years. 00:00:29,400 --> 00:00:34,200 Remember, that's the increment of 40, that perfect test. 00:00:34,200 --> 00:00:38,400 And so after 400 years, they still couldn't get themselves out. 00:00:38,400 --> 00:00:43,400 Only by the power of God and only through the blood of a Passover lamb were they made free, 00:00:43,400 --> 00:00:50,900 which is a picture of us. 00:00:50,900 --> 00:00:52,900 There's no way that we can get ourselves out of the bondage to sin, Satan, and death, 00:00:52,900 --> 00:00:58,200 but through the gospel of Jesus Christ, the blood of our Passover lamb who died for us. 00:00:58,200 --> 00:01:04,600 And then they get into the wilderness, and once again, there's nothing there to sustain them. 00:01:04,600 --> 00:01:12,300 There's no bread. There's no water. 00:01:12,300 --> 00:01:15,500 God brought them into the desert on purpose to show them that man does not live by bread alone, 00:01:15,500 --> 00:01:22,200 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:01:22,200 --> 00:01:24,700 In other words, if they follow God, if they take heed to His word, He will provide for them. 00:01:24,700 --> 00:01:32,200 And there was no way they could get themselves across that desert on their own into the Promised Land. 00:01:32,200 --> 00:01:38,700 They began by the power of God, and they would finish by the power of God. 00:01:38,700 --> 00:01:45,000 To show us that salvation from start to finish is all by God's grace in His work in not ours. 00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:56,000 We can't start it. We can't finish it. 00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:59,000 Some people say, "Well, we start off by trusting Christ as our Savior, 00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:06,300 and then we've got to keep living good enough, doing good enough, and all these things. 00:02:06,300 --> 00:02:11,000 And we've got to keep ourselves saved, and we can no more keep ourselves saved 00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:17,000 than they could supply bread from the sky and water from that rock. 00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:22,000 And so now we're moving on into the next phase. 00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:26,000 I told you last week that we were going to be at Mount Sinai today, 00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:32,000 where God told Moses when He first met with Moses in that burning bush, He says, 00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:38,000 "You will be back here at this same place, worshipping Me with the people of Israel." 00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:44,000 And now here they are today. 00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:46,000 And so, in fact, let's do this. Let's turn to chapter 19 first. 00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:53,000 We're going to be in chapter 20, but let's go ahead and look here in chapter 19 first, please. 00:02:53,000 --> 00:03:04,000 If you'll look with me in verse 9, 00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:15,000 "And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, 00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:22,000 that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee forever. 00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:28,000 And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord. 00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:32,000 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow, 00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:37,000 and let them wash their clothes, and be ready against the third day. 00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:41,000 For the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon Mount Sinai." 00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:47,000 So here's what's happened. Here's the back story to this. 00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:52,000 God told Moses, "If these people will follow My word, My law, 00:03:52,000 --> 00:04:00,000 then I'm going to make a great nation out of them. 00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:02,000 They're going to be a nation like no other nation. 00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:05,000 I'm going to bless them and all these things." 00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:07,000 The people said, "Oh, we'll do that. We'll follow His law." 00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:10,000 So God says, "Okay, here's what you do, Moses. 00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:13,000 Have them get washed, dressed, clean, and ready. 00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:20,000 Because on the third day I am going to descend down upon Mount Sinai in a thick cloud, 00:04:20,000 --> 00:04:28,000 and the people will be able to hear Me when I speak and give My commandments to them." 00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:34,000 Man, everyone's ready. This is exciting. 00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:37,000 We're going to hear God's voice. He's going to tell us what He wants us to do. 00:04:37,000 --> 00:04:41,000 This is going to be wonderful. 00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:44,000 Let's go ahead and look here now in verse 12. 00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:48,000 "And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, 00:04:48,000 --> 00:04:52,000 saying, 'Take heed to yourselves that you go not up into the mount, 00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:56,000 or touch the border of it. Whosoever toucheth the mount 00:04:56,000 --> 00:05:00,000 shall surely be put to death. There shall not in hand touch it, 00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:04,000 but he shall surely be stoned or shot through, whether it be beast or man. 00:05:04,000 --> 00:05:10,000 It shall not live. When the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.'" 00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:15,000 Now, it's not quite so exciting. 00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:19,000 So here, we're going to have the mountain here. 00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:23,000 Let's see here. This is going to represent the mountain, Mount Sinai. 00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:29,000 And so God says, "Get ready. Get clean. Get presentable." 00:05:29,000 --> 00:05:35,000 And on the third day, "I'm going to descend down in the cloud upon this mountain." 00:05:35,000 --> 00:05:41,000 They won't see me, but they're going to hear me when I speak. 00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:44,000 But before I do this, there are some preparations you need to make. 00:05:44,000 --> 00:05:49,000 You need to put borders up around the mountain. 00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:53,000 So we're going to say we set some stones up, kind of like we would cones or something, you know. 00:05:53,000 --> 00:05:58,000 And so they set stones up around the mountain. They set a border around it. 00:05:58,000 --> 00:06:04,000 Now we've got a border around this mountain. 00:06:04,000 --> 00:06:08,000 We've got two million people coming up to the mountain. 00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:12,000 God said, "Have them come to the mountain, but don't pass that border." 00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:17,000 If you so much as touch the mountain, you're dead. 00:06:17,000 --> 00:06:24,000 I'm going to require the people to stone you or shoot you through with a dart or something. 00:06:24,000 --> 00:06:29,000 You're dead. All right? 00:06:29,000 --> 00:06:32,000 And so now it's not quite so exciting anymore. 00:06:32,000 --> 00:06:36,000 So we come up to the mountain to hear God's word, but we can't come to the mountain. 00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:43,000 We can't climb up to where God is. 00:06:43,000 --> 00:06:47,000 In fact, we can't so much as even touch the mountain that God is descending on. 00:06:47,000 --> 00:06:55,000 There's this boundary, this barrier that separates the people from God. 00:06:55,000 --> 00:07:05,000 Why? Why is this boundary there? 00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:09,000 It's to show us that God is a holy God. 00:07:09,000 --> 00:07:14,000 These people are sinners. They were born in Adam. 00:07:14,000 --> 00:07:19,000 And unholy people and a holy God, God can't fellowship with unholyness. 00:07:19,000 --> 00:07:26,000 God can't accept unholy people. 00:07:26,000 --> 00:07:31,000 And so right off the bat, before God even gives the law, He shows them. 00:07:31,000 --> 00:07:39,000 No matter what, no matter how clean you wash yourselves, no matter how prepared you are, 00:07:39,000 --> 00:07:45,000 you can't come to Me. 00:07:45,000 --> 00:07:48,000 You can't come to Me. The law that God's about to give can't bring those people to Him. 00:07:48,000 --> 00:07:54,000 They have to hear it. They have to obey it. 00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:58,000 But there's this border that separates us and God. 00:07:58,000 --> 00:08:03,000 Do you remember the dream that Jacob had, the ladder set up on earth and the top reached to heaven? 00:08:03,000 --> 00:08:12,000 That bridged that gap between God and man. The ladder did. 00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:16,000 And what the ladder would accomplish, which was Jesus. 00:08:16,000 --> 00:08:19,000 But right now, we have to understand, no matter how hard we work, no matter how clean we get ourselves, 00:08:19,000 --> 00:08:27,000 a holy God cannot accept unholy people. 00:08:27,000 --> 00:08:30,000 People say, "Well, God's a loving God. 00:08:30,000 --> 00:08:34,000 You know, He loves everybody and He accepts everybody. He's inclusive." 00:08:34,000 --> 00:08:42,000 The boundary says God's exclusive. You see? 00:08:42,000 --> 00:08:46,000 The boundary says otherwise. 00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:49,000 God is the one with the original border walls, okay? 00:08:49,000 --> 00:08:53,000 I mean, He says, "Can't come here. The penalty's death if you try." 00:08:53,000 --> 00:09:00,000 Now that cuts across the grain of modern theological thinking, doesn't it? 00:09:00,000 --> 00:09:05,000 He says, "We're all God's children. He accepts us like we are. I just made a likeness of that. 00:21:00,000 --> 00:21:03,000 And some people say, "Well, that's sin." 00:21:03,000 --> 00:21:05,000 If that's sin, then it's also sin to have a photograph of your loved ones in your home, 00:21:05,000 --> 00:21:10,000 because that's also an image of something in heaven above or in the earth beneath. 00:21:10,000 --> 00:21:14,000 That's not what God's saying. 00:21:14,000 --> 00:21:16,000 What God's saying is don't make these things for the purpose of bowing down and serving them. 00:21:16,000 --> 00:21:21,000 We know that it's okay to have an image of something in heaven above 00:21:21,000 --> 00:21:27,000 or in the earth beneath or in the water under the earth, 00:21:27,000 --> 00:21:30,000 because later on God's going to give them specific commandments concerning building the tabernacle, 00:21:30,000 --> 00:21:39,000 in which he will tell them, "Make graven images for the Most Holy Place, two cherubim. 00:21:39,000 --> 00:21:46,000 Make these images and likenesses of these things, but they won't be bowing down and serving them." 00:21:46,000 --> 00:21:52,000 So that's the difference. 00:21:52,000 --> 00:21:54,000 It's okay to have an image as long as you're not bowing down and serving it. 00:21:54,000 --> 00:21:58,000 But what does an image do? 00:21:58,000 --> 00:22:01,000 If you make an image of something, even an image of what you think would be Jesus, 00:22:01,000 --> 00:22:08,000 and you worship the image, 00:22:08,000 --> 00:22:11,000 that image now is becoming a replacement for the person of Christ. 00:22:11,000 --> 00:22:18,000 The image now becomes something, a subtle false God, and you're now worshipping that. 00:22:18,000 --> 00:22:29,000 Does anyone in here think they've ever broken this commandment? 00:22:29,000 --> 00:22:35,000 You have? 00:22:35,000 --> 00:22:38,000 You have? 00:22:38,000 --> 00:22:40,000 Anyone think they haven't broken the commandment? 00:22:40,000 --> 00:22:45,000 I once scared to raise their hand, and I said, "He's going to say, 'I got you.'" 00:22:45,000 --> 00:22:49,000 Back in the late '80s, early '90s, there was this huge fad about people wearing angels, little angels. 00:22:49,000 --> 00:23:02,000 You weren't alive then. 00:23:02,000 --> 00:23:04,000 I remember the policemen would have a little angel on their uniform, on their lapel or something. 00:23:04,000 --> 00:23:12,000 Women would have a little angel necklace or a little angel bracelet or a little angel pin somewhere on them. 00:23:12,000 --> 00:23:18,000 It was such a big deal. Billy Graham even wrote a book about angels because everyone was angel crazy at the time. 00:23:18,000 --> 00:23:26,000 I remember asking someone one time, "Why are you wearing that angel?" 00:23:26,000 --> 00:23:31,000 "Well, I'm hoping that it will bring me good luck. I'm hoping it will help bring me fortune." 00:23:31,000 --> 00:23:35,000 Do you see what those people were doing? That was an idol. 00:23:35,000 --> 00:23:39,000 They were saying, "This little graven image, maybe it will help bless me in my life." 00:23:39,000 --> 00:23:46,000 Like that little thing that a man made and carved out, out of metal, that could have just as easily been turned into a can opener. 00:23:46,000 --> 00:23:55,000 That somehow something a man made could give them fortune and protection in life. 00:23:55,000 --> 00:24:02,000 The policemen wore them on their uniforms for protection. 00:24:02,000 --> 00:24:07,000 Catholic churches are filled with idols. 00:24:07,000 --> 00:24:11,000 They walk up to a statue of Mary, "Hell, Mary, Mother of Jesus," and all this stuff, or "Mother of God," whatever. 00:24:11,000 --> 00:24:20,000 They even have a crucifix, which is an image of what they think Jesus looked like, and he did not look anything like the Catholic. 00:24:20,000 --> 00:24:30,000 Catholics have weird images. It's weird. 00:24:30,000 --> 00:24:33,000 Little shiny halos over the head and all that stuff. 00:24:33,000 --> 00:24:38,000 But what happens when they come to a work of a man's hands, a statue, and they come to that statue and they bow down and pray to that statue? 00:24:38,000 --> 00:24:55,000 That now is standing. They're worshipping a piece of wood or a piece of stone or a piece of metal, or probably, due to inflation today, a piece of plastic. 00:24:55,000 --> 00:25:05,000 Seriously, plaster or something, and it's not God. That is wrong to do. 00:25:05,000 --> 00:25:16,000 Never hang something up in your house that you think is going to give you good luck. 00:25:16,000 --> 00:25:20,000 Rabbit's foot. Have you all had a lucky rabbit's foot? 00:25:20,000 --> 00:25:24,000 You put it around your rearview mirror hoping it would bring you good luck. That's an idol. 00:25:24,000 --> 00:25:29,000 That dead rabbit's appendage has no ability to give you any blessing in life. 00:25:29,000 --> 00:25:37,000 At that time, you're saying, "Instead of seeking God for this blessing, I'm going to seek a dead rabbit's foot." 00:25:37,000 --> 00:25:45,000 Or, better than that, say, "No, I know only God can bless me, but I'll use the foot. Maybe God will use the dead rabbit's foot to bless me." 00:25:45,000 --> 00:25:54,000 Which isn't true. It's still false worship, you say, because it's not according to God's word. 00:25:54,000 --> 00:26:01,000 There are many ways to have idols that you worship instead of God. 00:26:01,000 --> 00:26:09,000 Let's say that you make something, or you have something. It could even be a sports car. It could even be something you love so much. 00:26:09,000 --> 00:26:19,000 You spend so much time doting on it so that it has your affection more than God does. 00:26:19,000 --> 00:26:27,000 That then becomes an idol to you. You see? 00:26:27,000 --> 00:26:30,000 All right, let's move on. God says, "Don't do this because I'm a jealous God." 00:26:30,000 --> 00:26:37,000 Is it right for God to be jealous? Sure. There's a difference between jealousy and envy. 00:26:37,000 --> 00:26:45,000 God doesn't envy anybody, but he is jealous. 00:26:45,000 --> 00:26:49,000 Tanya, if some woman were to flirt with your husband, would you be jealous? 00:26:49,000 --> 00:26:58,000 Yeah. Would she be right to be jealous? Absolutely. 00:26:58,000 --> 00:27:03,000 If she wasn't jealous and she didn't care, she would not love her husband. 00:27:03,000 --> 00:27:09,000 She would be jealous because the relationship is very valuable in her eyes. 00:27:09,000 --> 00:27:18,000 If someone is not jealous in a relationship, they do not value the relationship. 00:27:18,000 --> 00:27:24,000 God was jealous over the people of Israel because he considered them his spouse, spiritually speaking. 00:27:24,000 --> 00:27:31,000 He loved them like a wife. The Bible calls the Church of Jesus Christ the bride of Christ. 00:27:31,000 --> 00:27:38,000 He's jealous over us with that godly, loving, protective jealousy in that he says, 00:27:38,000 --> 00:27:46,000 "I value this relationship between me and my church. I don't want to lose you." 00:27:46,000 --> 00:27:53,000 Isn't that precious? It would hurt me if my wife said, "Oh, I don't care if Richard runs off with someone else." 00:27:53,000 --> 00:28:00,000 I would think, "What? You don't value me." 00:28:00,000 --> 00:28:04,000 God is a jealous God in that sense. Let's go ahead and look here in verse 7. 00:28:04,000 --> 00:28:09,000 "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain." 00:28:09,000 --> 00:28:17,000 "And be valor broken that commandment before." 00:28:17,000 --> 00:28:20,000 Probably everybody in here. 00:28:20,000 --> 00:28:22,000 But taking God's name in vain, here's what all that consists of. 00:28:22,000 --> 00:28:27,000 God's name is holy. God's name is special. It should never be used lightly. 00:28:27,000 --> 00:28:33,000 It should never be used in a vain or empty way. 00:28:33,000 --> 00:28:37,000 When we see somebody go, "Oh my God, that's taking his name in vain." 00:28:37,000 --> 00:28:41,000 It's wrong. O-M-G. It's wrong. It's taking his name in vain. 00:28:41,000 --> 00:28:47,000 To where God's name becomes something we just throw around as a byword, it's disrespectful. 00:28:47,000 --> 00:28:55,000 Very disrespectful. 00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:58,000 God, D-A-M-N-E-D. That's taking his name in vain. 00:28:58,000 --> 00:29:04,000 But let me tell you another way that's taking his name in vain. 00:29:04,000 --> 00:29:09,000 When we take God's name and we call ourselves by God's name, we say, "I'm a child of God." 00:29:09,000 --> 00:29:16,000 But then, having identified ourselves as a child of God, we then do not live according to God's word. 00:29:16,000 --> 00:29:26,000 We have now taken that name in vain. 00:29:26,000 --> 00:29:30,000 People call themselves Christians, and they don't live like Christians. 00:29:30,000 --> 00:29:36,000 They took God's name in vain, absolutely in a worthless, empty way. 00:29:36,000 --> 00:29:43,000 The Bible says God will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 00:29:43,000 --> 00:29:49,000 Any time you've claimed to be a Christian, any time you've claimed to be a follower of God, 00:29:49,000 --> 00:29:54,000 and you have not followed God according to the name you've identified yourself by, 00:29:54,000 --> 00:29:59,000 you were taking God's name in vain and never do that. 00:29:59,000 --> 00:30:04,000 What does that teach us? 00:30:04,000 --> 00:30:06,000 It teaches us that we should honor God with our lives and with our mouth. 00:30:06,000 --> 00:30:14,000 The words we say should never defame God's name. 00:30:14,000 --> 00:30:18,000 The actions that we take should never defame God's name. 00:30:18,000 --> 00:30:23,000 No one should be able to look at us and say, "Well, now that's why I wouldn't want to be a Christian." 00:30:23,000 --> 00:30:27,000 Because look at them right there, living that way. 00:30:27,000 --> 00:30:30,000 And that happens all the time. 00:30:30,000 --> 00:30:32,000 I don't want to go down there to that church, a bunch of hypocrites down there. 00:30:32,000 --> 00:30:37,000 Let's go ahead and look here now in verse 8. 00:30:37,000 --> 00:30:41,000 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:30:41,000 --> 00:30:44,000 Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work, 00:30:44,000 --> 00:30:47,000 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. 00:30:47,000 --> 00:30:50,000 In it thou shalt not do any work, 00:30:50,000 --> 00:30:53,000 thou nor thy son nor thy daughter nor thy manservant nor thy maidservant nor thy cattle 00:30:53,000 --> 00:31:01,000 nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. 00:31:01,000 --> 00:31:03,000 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 00:31:03,000 --> 00:31:06,000 the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day. 00:31:06,000 --> 00:31:10,000 Wherefore, or because of this, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." 00:31:10,000 --> 00:31:15,000 So let's look here at the Sabbath day. 00:31:15,000 --> 00:31:20,000 It may not be what you think. 00:31:20,000 --> 00:31:22,000 Let's look here at the Sabbath day. 00:31:22,000 --> 00:31:26,000 The Sabbath day is the seventh day, we see clearly. 00:31:26,000 --> 00:31:32,000 If you think that today is the Sabbath day, you're wrong. 00:31:32,000 --> 00:31:37,000 Yesterday was the Sabbath day. 00:31:37,000 --> 00:31:40,000 Back then, and still in Israel today, they use Saturday as the Sabbath. 00:31:40,000 --> 00:31:48,000 Back then it was still Saturday being the Sabbath. 00:31:48,000 --> 00:31:52,000 Coming to church, Sunday is not the Sabbath day. 00:31:52,000 --> 00:31:56,000 Someone say, "Well, I can't cut the grass today, it's the Sabbath." 00:31:56,000 --> 00:32:01,000 When they get out of church, that's not true. 00:32:01,000 --> 00:32:05,000 It's not the Sabbath day, that was yesterday. 00:32:05,000 --> 00:32:09,000 So what do we do? Do we say, "Well, we can't work on Saturday." 00:32:09,000 --> 00:32:14,000 What does this mean? 00:32:14,000 --> 00:32:16,000 For them, back then, the seventh day being Saturday was a day of absolute rest. 00:32:16,000 --> 00:32:23,000 On the seventh day, they were to remember that God made everything in six days. 00:32:23,000 --> 00:32:31,000 So on the seventh day, they rested like God did. 00:32:31,000 --> 00:32:35,000 But resting on the seventh day, they were acknowledging that all of God's creation work was done. 00:32:35,000 --> 00:32:42,000 Make sense? 00:32:42,000 --> 00:32:44,000 When the promised Savior came, something changed. 00:32:44,000 --> 00:32:50,000 When the promised Savior came, the disciples no longer met on the seventh day. 00:32:50,000 --> 00:32:57,000 Do you remember when they started meeting? Anyone? 00:32:57,000 --> 00:33:01,000 They started meeting on the first day. 00:33:01,000 --> 00:33:04,000 Anyone remember why they started meeting on the first day? 00:33:04,000 --> 00:33:09,000 Because that was the day Jesus rose from the dead. 00:33:09,000 --> 00:33:13,000 It was Sunday morning, that Jesus rose from the dead. 00:33:13,000 --> 00:33:18,000 And so now, the early church are in meeting on the first day, 00:33:18,000 --> 00:33:24,000 and even in the Scriptures, it spoke of them coming together on the first day. 00:33:24,000 --> 00:33:30,000 Because the Sabbath day was just like that bread in the Old Testament, the manna that came down. 00:33:30,000 --> 00:33:38,000 It was a picture of Christ. 00:33:38,000 --> 00:33:40,000 Now, the church follows the Sabbath commandment, not by worshiping the day, 00:33:40,000 --> 00:33:48,000 but by worshiping the Savior the day represented. 00:33:48,000 --> 00:33:53,000 Now, on the first day of the week, why are we here on the first day of the week? 00:33:53,000 --> 00:33:59,000 Don't say, "Well, because it's Sunday." No, that's not why. 00:33:59,000 --> 00:34:02,000 We're here on the first day of the week because Christians or people, 00:34:02,000 --> 00:34:07,000 just as they on the seventh day, remembered that all of God's creation work was done, 00:34:07,000 --> 00:34:14,000 so they rested in God's rest. 00:34:14,000 --> 00:34:17,000 So we on the first day come together remembering that all of God's redemptive saving work is done. 00:34:17,000 --> 00:34:24,000 And as God has rested from his work of salvation, we rest in that too. 00:34:24,000 --> 00:34:31,000 Make sense? 00:34:31,000 --> 00:34:32,000 All right. 00:34:32,000 --> 00:34:33,000 So now, Christ has become our Sabbath. 00:34:33,000 --> 00:34:39,000 All right. 00:34:39,000 --> 00:34:40,000 Real quick, turn to the book of Colossians. 00:34:40,000 --> 00:34:46,000 Let me find this real quick. 00:34:46,000 --> 00:34:51,000 I think it's Chapter 1, but it's been a while since I've turned there. 00:34:51,000 --> 00:35:03,000 Colossians Chapter 2. 00:35:03,000 --> 00:35:11,000 Colossians Chapter 2. It's in the New Testament. 00:35:11,000 --> 00:35:20,000 Colossians Chapter 2, Verse 13. 00:35:20,000 --> 00:35:27,000 Remember God's electric power company. 00:35:27,000 --> 00:35:29,000 If you find Galatians, the next is Ephesians, the next is Philippians, 00:35:29,000 --> 00:35:33,000 the next is Colossians, God's electric power company. 00:35:33,000 --> 00:35:36,000 All right. 00:35:36,000 --> 00:35:37,000 Look in Colossians 3, Verse, I'm sorry, 2, Chapter 2, Verse 13. 00:35:37,000 --> 00:35:41,000 Ready? 00:35:41,000 --> 00:35:42,000 "And you, being dead in your sins and the incircumcision of your flesh, 00:35:42,000 --> 00:35:46,000 "he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses." 00:35:46,000 --> 00:35:51,000 How many trespasses has God forgiven those who trust in Christ? 00:35:51,000 --> 00:35:54,000 All of them. 00:35:54,000 --> 00:35:56,000 Watch this now. 00:35:56,000 --> 00:35:57,000 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us." 00:35:57,000 --> 00:36:00,000 The handwriting of ordinances means all the laws we broke. 00:36:00,000 --> 00:36:04,000 "He blotted them out and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross." 00:36:04,000 --> 00:36:10,000 They're gone. 00:36:10,000 --> 00:36:12,000 All the accusations of us breaking God's law were nailed to Jesus' cross. 00:36:12,000 --> 00:36:18,000 Look here now. 00:36:18,000 --> 00:36:19,000 Verse 15. 00:36:19,000 --> 00:36:20,000 "And having spoiled that his conquered principalities and powers, 00:36:20,000 --> 00:36:24,000 "he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 00:36:24,000 --> 00:36:28,000 "Let no man therefore judge you in meat that is what you eat, 00:36:28,000 --> 00:36:32,000 "or in drink that is what you drink, 00:36:32,000 --> 00:36:34,000 "or in respect of an holy day, 00:36:34,000 --> 00:36:36,000 "or of the new moons," look here now, "or of the Sabbath days, 00:36:36,000 --> 00:36:43,000 "which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Christ." 00:36:43,000 --> 00:36:49,000 All right? 00:36:49,000 --> 00:36:50,000 So if I was out in the sunshine right now, 00:36:50,000 --> 00:36:54,000 the sun is shining over here. 00:36:54,000 --> 00:36:57,000 It hits my body. 00:36:57,000 --> 00:36:59,000 It's going to cast a shadow, well, there's one right there, of Chris' body. 00:36:59,000 --> 00:37:03,000 There's a shadow of Chris' body right there. 00:37:03,000 --> 00:37:05,000 It looks like Chris. 00:37:05,000 --> 00:37:07,000 It resembles Chris, but it's not Chris. 00:37:07,000 --> 00:37:11,000 Look over here. 00:37:11,000 --> 00:37:12,000 I'm going to stomp on that shadow. 00:37:12,000 --> 00:37:14,000 Did that hurt you, any? 00:37:14,000 --> 00:37:15,000 (Laughter) 00:37:15,000 --> 00:37:17,000 It's not Chris. 00:37:17,000 --> 00:37:19,000 So the Sabbath day was a shadow of Jesus Christ. 00:37:19,000 --> 00:37:27,000 Resting on that Sabbath day was a shadow. 00:37:27,000 --> 00:37:31,000 It was a figure of Christ. 00:37:31,000 --> 00:37:33,000 But the actual body, the Apostle Paul said, is Christ Himself. 00:37:33,000 --> 00:37:38,000 So if we rest in Jesus Christ and the work He's done 00:37:38,000 --> 00:37:44,000 on the cross to His death, burial, and resurrection, 00:37:44,000 --> 00:37:47,000 we are honoring the Sabbath. 00:37:47,000 --> 00:37:51,000 We rest in His rest, remembering that all the work of salvation is done. 00:37:51,000 --> 00:37:58,000 On the other hand, if having known Christ has come, 00:37:58,000 --> 00:38:04,000 we say, "I'm not going to rest in that. 00:38:04,000 --> 00:38:06,000 I'm going to rest in the seventh day." 00:38:06,000 --> 00:38:08,000 Well, you'll have the seventh day rest, but you won't have eternal rest. 00:38:08,000 --> 00:38:12,000 The thing about the seventh day rest is this. 00:38:12,000 --> 00:38:15,000 Every Saturday, they had to quit working and rest again. 00:38:15,000 --> 00:38:19,000 But the next day, they had to start working again. 00:38:19,000 --> 00:38:22,000 The Sabbath rest never gave them eternal rest. 00:38:22,000 --> 00:38:26,000 The shadow couldn't give them true rest. 00:38:26,000 --> 00:38:30,000 They had to get back to work the next day. 00:38:30,000 --> 00:38:32,000 But the body, Jesus Christ, gives us rest so we never work again. 00:38:32,000 --> 00:38:38,000 We are resting in the finished work of Christ on the cross. 00:38:38,000 --> 00:38:41,000 Makes sense? 00:38:41,000 --> 00:38:42,000 All right. 00:38:42,000 --> 00:38:43,000 So this command in the Ten Commandments was a preparatory command, 00:38:43,000 --> 00:38:50,000 a command that necessitated God's people to rest. 00:38:50,000 --> 00:38:54,000 We still obey this command today, not by resting in the day, 00:38:54,000 --> 00:39:00,000 but by resting in the Son of God. 00:39:00,000 --> 00:39:03,000 Makes sense? 00:39:03,000 --> 00:39:04,000 All right. 00:39:04,000 --> 00:39:05,000 Let's move on now. 00:39:05,000 --> 00:39:09,000 Verse 12, "Honor thy father and thy mother, 00:39:09,000 --> 00:39:12,000 that that days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." 00:39:12,000 --> 00:39:16,000 Wow. 00:39:16,000 --> 00:39:17,000 Have you ever disobeyed your parents before? 00:39:17,000 --> 00:39:20,000 Have you ever talked to us respectfully to your parents before? 00:39:20,000 --> 00:39:23,000 Every one of us have. 00:39:23,000 --> 00:39:25,000 When you don't honor your father and mother, 00:39:25,000 --> 00:39:27,000 that doesn't mean you have to agree with everything they do. 00:39:27,000 --> 00:39:29,000 That doesn't mean you have to accept their sin. 00:39:29,000 --> 00:39:32,000 Some fathers and mothers are not good parents. 00:39:32,000 --> 00:39:35,000 I understand that. 00:39:35,000 --> 00:39:37,000 But the idea here is this, that God gave his parents to rear us up 00:39:37,000 --> 00:39:43,000 and put us under their authority. 00:39:43,000 --> 00:39:45,000 And while we're there, we need to subject to it. 00:39:45,000 --> 00:39:48,000 And then when they get old, we're to take care of them, you know? 00:39:48,000 --> 00:39:52,000 And help take care of our parents. 00:39:52,000 --> 00:39:55,000 And so there's this honor that comes with the parents, 00:39:55,000 --> 00:39:58,000 and God says it will help us live long upon the land, 00:39:58,000 --> 00:40:02,000 which if people would listen to their parents, generally speaking, 00:40:02,000 --> 00:40:07,000 they would last a lot longer. 00:40:07,000 --> 00:40:09,000 I know a few that I went to school with that would be alive, 00:40:09,000 --> 00:40:12,000 possibly right now, had they listened to their parents 00:40:12,000 --> 00:40:15,000 and not gone out drinking and driving. 00:40:15,000 --> 00:40:17,000 All right. 00:40:17,000 --> 00:40:18,000 Let's go ahead and look here now. 00:40:18,000 --> 00:40:20,000 Verse 13, thou shalt not kill. 00:40:20,000 --> 00:40:23,000 So I know I haven't broken that commandment, Brother Richard. 00:40:23,000 --> 00:40:27,000 Yes, you have. 00:40:27,000 --> 00:40:29,000 Because life, Jesus said that he came that we might have life 00:40:29,000 --> 00:40:35,000 and that we might have it more abundantly. 00:40:35,000 --> 00:40:37,000 So that means life is given in measure. 00:40:37,000 --> 00:40:41,000 You can have life in the sense of mere existence. 00:40:41,000 --> 00:40:44,000 You can have life in the sense of ecstatic joy. 00:40:44,000 --> 00:40:48,000 Some people live life to the fullest. 00:40:48,000 --> 00:40:50,000 Some people just are starving and skinny 00:40:50,000 --> 00:40:53,000 and just trying to keep living 00:40:53,000 --> 00:40:56,000 and hoping they can find the next meal somewhere. 00:40:56,000 --> 00:40:59,000 The thing about killing is this. 00:40:59,000 --> 00:41:01,000 Anytime I deprive somebody of the full, perfect, joyful life 00:41:01,000 --> 00:41:08,000 that God created them to have, 00:41:08,000 --> 00:41:10,000 I have then killed them in a measure. 00:41:10,000 --> 00:41:12,000 I've robbed them of a portion of that life. 00:41:12,000 --> 00:41:15,000 Make sense? This guy preached." 00:42:00,000 --> 00:42:03,000 And it would trouble him in his heart. 00:42:03,000 --> 00:42:05,000 If I troubled that man wrongfully, 00:42:05,000 --> 00:42:08,000 did I just deprive him of the life of joy that God... 00:42:08,000 --> 00:42:13,000 Yes. 00:42:13,000 --> 00:42:14,000 The Bible says, Jesus said, 00:42:14,000 --> 00:42:17,000 "If you hate your brother without a cause, you've broken this commandment." 00:42:17,000 --> 00:42:23,000 Because in your heart, do we care what people think about us? 00:42:23,000 --> 00:42:28,000 In our pride, we may say, "I don't care what people think about me," but we do. 00:42:28,000 --> 00:42:31,000 That's how come on Facebook we always say, 00:42:31,000 --> 00:42:34,000 "Look at me! We're out eating together. 00:42:36,000 --> 00:42:38,000 We have the wonderful marriage and wonderful life. 00:42:38,000 --> 00:42:40,000 Celebrate us. We do care what people think about us. 00:42:40,000 --> 00:42:44,000 We definitely do. 00:42:44,000 --> 00:42:46,000 And I don't want someone thinking wrong about me. 00:42:46,000 --> 00:42:48,000 Man, if someone thought, like if I'm in Walmart or something, 00:42:48,000 --> 00:42:55,000 if I have an item in my hand, 00:42:55,000 --> 00:42:58,000 I'd do my best to make sure that people on camera, anyone watching me, 00:42:58,000 --> 00:43:04,000 they can see that item in my hand, they know, I haven't slipped in my pocket. 00:43:04,000 --> 00:43:08,000 I care what they think about me. 00:43:08,000 --> 00:43:10,000 And if I knew that one of y'all thought I may have shoplifted something from Walmart, 00:43:10,000 --> 00:43:16,000 if I thought one of y'all for a moment thought that I have done somebody wrong, 00:43:16,000 --> 00:43:22,000 I would want to correct that in your head. 00:43:22,000 --> 00:43:25,000 And you would want to correct that in my head, 00:43:25,000 --> 00:43:28,000 because you don't want me thinking that about you. 00:43:28,000 --> 00:43:30,000 So killing someone is not just being mean to them, not just taking their life away, 00:43:30,000 --> 00:43:37,000 but it's thinking wrong about someone in your mind. 00:43:37,000 --> 00:43:40,000 Okay? 00:43:40,000 --> 00:43:41,000 Let's look here. 00:43:41,000 --> 00:43:43,000 Verse 14, "Thou shalt not come into adultery." 00:43:43,000 --> 00:43:48,000 If you look at another man or another woman, 00:43:48,000 --> 00:43:54,000 and you lust after that person in your heart, 00:43:54,000 --> 00:43:56,000 you were just unfaithful to your spouse. 00:43:56,000 --> 00:44:00,000 I don't want, and you don't want, 00:44:00,000 --> 00:44:03,000 your spouse to be thinking and daydreaming about anyone but you. 00:44:03,000 --> 00:44:08,000 Isn't it great to think that your husband or wife is crazy about you, 00:44:08,000 --> 00:44:14,000 and that you satisfy all of their needs and their desires, 00:44:14,000 --> 00:44:18,000 and they're just head over heels in love with you?
