All right, so last week we went over God giving the law. 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,400 And if you all remember, remember they met back on Mount Sinai where God promised Moses they would return to and they'd worship him there. 00:00:05,400 --> 00:00:14,800 And so here they come together and they're going to have God meet with them that next day. 00:00:14,800 --> 00:00:23,200 But it wasn't quite like everybody expected, you know. 00:00:23,200 --> 00:00:27,200 Because instead of having this great welcome party and them and God coming together there at the mountain and having a great time, 00:00:27,200 --> 00:00:33,900 it was different because what did God do to ensure they couldn't get up to the mountain? 00:00:33,900 --> 00:00:40,900 - Does he put any more rocks? - Yeah, he put boundaries around the mountain. 00:00:40,900 --> 00:00:45,900 And so let's say they set stones up or something around that mountain. 00:00:45,900 --> 00:00:50,800 So they put boundaries around the mountain. 00:00:50,800 --> 00:00:53,100 So right off the bat they see that, okay, this law God's going to give us, it's not going to bring us closer to God, is it? 00:00:53,100 --> 00:01:05,600 I mean, what was the penalty if they crossed over the boundary and touched the mountain? 00:01:05,600 --> 00:01:10,000 - Death. - Death. The penalty was death. Right. 00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:13,200 So we see that we have an unholy man because we're all sinners. 00:01:13,200 --> 00:01:20,400 And we have a holy God here, sinless, perfect, righteous. 00:01:20,400 --> 00:01:26,400 And an unholy man and a holy God, they can't join together. 00:01:26,400 --> 00:01:31,700 And so they put these boundaries up, the penalty for coming there and this condition was death. 00:01:31,700 --> 00:01:37,600 And so God gave the law and let's go ahead and look back. 00:01:37,600 --> 00:01:42,200 Remember there was what? Thunders, lightnings, earthquake, the earth was trembling, 00:01:42,200 --> 00:01:49,400 and the mountain was like it was a furnace of fire and smoke and all that, and a loud trump. 00:01:49,400 --> 00:01:56,400 It wasn't a pleasant voice. 00:01:56,400 --> 00:01:59,900 But it's just this incredible experience they had and it scared them. 00:01:59,900 --> 00:02:06,600 So let's go ahead and look here in Exodus 20 verse 18. 00:02:06,600 --> 00:02:11,800 "And all the people saw..." 00:02:11,800 --> 00:02:13,900 We got something dinging. 00:02:13,900 --> 00:02:16,200 Thought I heard something dinging. 00:02:16,200 --> 00:02:18,600 Okay. As long as I'm not the only one hearing it, that's fine. 00:02:18,600 --> 00:02:23,700 So, in verse 18, "And all the people saw the thunderings and the lightnings 00:02:23,700 --> 00:02:28,800 and the noise of the trumpet and the mountain smoking. 00:02:28,800 --> 00:02:31,100 When the people saw it..." 00:02:31,100 --> 00:02:32,800 And this is the key. This is the key. 00:02:32,800 --> 00:02:35,600 "They removed..." 00:02:35,600 --> 00:02:39,800 When we think of removed, we think of separation. Right? 00:02:39,800 --> 00:02:46,900 So our sin, it separates us from God. You see? 00:02:46,900 --> 00:02:52,600 They removed. 00:02:52,600 --> 00:02:54,300 And did they just step back a little bit? 00:02:54,300 --> 00:02:56,800 What does it say? They removed in what? 00:02:56,800 --> 00:03:00,100 Look back in your text. 00:03:00,100 --> 00:03:03,000 Far off, man. Let's get out of here. 00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:06,100 No, that's not cool. Right? 00:03:06,100 --> 00:03:07,800 Let's get out of here. They got far away. 00:03:07,800 --> 00:03:11,700 So we may think that we're really holy people. 00:03:11,700 --> 00:03:16,500 We may think that we're really good people. 00:03:16,500 --> 00:03:20,700 But in the presence of a righteous and holy God, 00:03:20,700 --> 00:03:25,700 we see that, you know what? We're a long way off from Him. 00:03:25,700 --> 00:03:29,600 Our sin has not only separated us with a little gap that we can just cross over on our own. 00:03:29,600 --> 00:03:36,700 It's separated us a long way off. 00:03:36,700 --> 00:03:38,800 Remember the dream that Jacob had? 00:03:38,800 --> 00:03:42,200 It took a ladder set up on earth that could bridge that gap between heaven and earth. 00:03:42,200 --> 00:03:48,200 That's a long ladder. 00:03:48,200 --> 00:03:50,600 And so the distance between us and God is so far of a distance because of our sin. 00:03:50,600 --> 00:03:56,000 We can't bridge that gap. 00:03:56,000 --> 00:03:59,300 So let's go ahead and look here now and see the response of the people in verse 19. 00:03:59,300 --> 00:04:07,200 "And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; 00:04:07,200 --> 00:04:13,300 but let not God speak with us, lest we die." 00:04:13,300 --> 00:04:17,200 Okay. So what we see now is Moses, he's already taken on the role of deliverer, right? 00:04:17,200 --> 00:04:23,800 He came in, delivered the people out of Egypt, of course by the power of God, 00:04:23,800 --> 00:04:27,500 but God used him as the instrument to deliver the people out of Egypt 00:04:27,500 --> 00:04:30,800 through the power of a Passover lamp. 00:04:30,800 --> 00:04:34,200 Now we see Moses is taking on a different role, an additional role here. 00:04:34,200 --> 00:04:40,400 And so the people say, "Okay Moses, we were fine talking to you this whole time. 00:04:40,400 --> 00:04:46,200 We're comfortable talking to you. 00:04:46,200 --> 00:04:48,700 We can't deal with talking to God directly. 00:04:48,700 --> 00:04:52,100 This is scary. We're afraid it's going to be our death. 00:04:52,100 --> 00:04:57,800 So here's what we do. 00:04:57,800 --> 00:04:59,900 We'll continue talking to you. 00:04:59,900 --> 00:05:03,000 You then talk to God and find out what all God wants us to know. 00:05:03,000 --> 00:05:06,800 You then come back and tell us, we'll hear it from you." 00:05:06,800 --> 00:05:09,700 And so now what's happening is Moses is becoming a what? 00:05:09,700 --> 00:05:21,000 A middleman, a go-between. 00:05:21,000 --> 00:05:24,600 And what did you say? Mediator. 00:05:24,600 --> 00:05:27,400 And that's the difference because you've got church background and you don't. 00:05:27,400 --> 00:05:31,200 But it's the same thing. 00:05:31,200 --> 00:05:33,200 Whether middleman or mediator, it's the same principle. 00:05:33,200 --> 00:05:37,700 So you've got to go between a middleman and mediator, 00:05:37,700 --> 00:05:41,900 now between a holy God and an unholy people. 00:05:41,900 --> 00:05:45,900 And this shows us, because here God's giving a law. 00:05:45,900 --> 00:05:51,400 And this law is good, because all the Ten Commandments we went over last week, 00:05:51,400 --> 00:05:58,400 they were all good. 00:05:58,400 --> 00:05:59,600 We don't need to commit adultery. 00:05:59,600 --> 00:06:02,200 And remember, half of them were toward God, half of them were toward men. 00:06:02,200 --> 00:06:05,800 And basically, we're to love the Lord our God with all of our heart 00:06:05,800 --> 00:06:09,400 and love our neighbor as ourself. 00:06:09,400 --> 00:06:10,900 And you can't find anything wrong with that. 00:06:10,900 --> 00:06:13,800 So the law's good, but we see because of our sinful nature, 00:06:13,800 --> 00:06:20,100 the law is incapable of bridging that gap. 00:06:20,100 --> 00:06:24,300 In other words, there's no way that we can obey that law good enough 00:06:24,300 --> 00:06:29,000 to bridge the gap between unholy people and a holy God. 00:06:29,000 --> 00:06:32,200 So there was a need for a go between, a middleman, a mediator. 00:06:32,200 --> 00:06:37,200 And Moses was that middleman. 00:06:37,200 --> 00:06:39,800 Now remember, we learned when Moses delivered the people out of Egypt, 00:06:39,800 --> 00:06:45,300 he was a picture of the Promised Savior. 00:06:45,300 --> 00:06:47,400 Remember? 00:06:47,400 --> 00:06:49,000 In the same way, Moses being a mediator, which is a go between, 00:06:49,000 --> 00:06:54,800 and mediator is a legal term for middleman. 00:06:54,800 --> 00:06:57,800 Okay, of course, middleman, we could use that maybe in business, 00:06:57,800 --> 00:07:01,000 someone getting profit or something. 00:07:01,000 --> 00:07:03,200 But mediator, and I work at a courthouse, 00:07:03,200 --> 00:07:06,200 and we have mediation at the courthouse, 00:07:06,200 --> 00:07:09,900 where you have two opposing parties, 00:07:09,900 --> 00:07:13,800 and instead of going to a trial and going through all the expense of a trial, 00:07:13,800 --> 00:07:19,700 the mediator will come in and hold mediation, 00:07:19,700 --> 00:07:23,900 where they will go between a neutral party, 00:07:23,900 --> 00:07:25,800 they'll go between the alleged offender and the alleged offended, 00:07:25,800 --> 00:07:31,400 and try to find some way to reconcile the difference between those two parties. 00:07:31,400 --> 00:07:36,800 Okay? 00:07:36,800 --> 00:07:37,800 And so Moses is taking this position of a mediator, 00:07:37,800 --> 00:07:41,400 some type of reconciliation between the offended party and the offenders, right? 00:07:41,400 --> 00:07:48,900 The offending party, all right? 00:07:48,900 --> 00:07:51,000 That's what Moses is going to represent now. 00:07:51,000 --> 00:07:55,200 So, when the Savior comes, Moses being a picture of the promised Savior, 00:07:55,200 --> 00:08:00,700 he's going to do both. 00:08:00,700 --> 00:08:02,400 Not only is he going to deliver us out, 00:08:02,400 --> 00:08:05,300 but he's going to become a mediator to reconcile the two parties, 00:08:05,300 --> 00:08:09,400 because what good is it if we get delivered out of our bondage, 00:08:09,400 --> 00:08:15,200 remember Egypt was a picture of our bondage to sin, Satan, and death, 00:08:15,200 --> 00:08:18,200 what good is it for us to be delivered out of bondage to sin, Satan, and death, 00:08:18,200 --> 00:08:23,400 and yet still be far off from our Creator. 00:08:23,400 --> 00:08:25,800 That's no good. 00:08:25,800 --> 00:08:27,800 Far off from God, our source of life. 00:08:27,800 --> 00:08:29,900 You're out of bondage to one thing and not connected to anything else. 00:08:29,900 --> 00:08:36,000 So, this is what the promised Savior is going to do. 00:08:36,000 --> 00:08:40,400 Now, if you'll look here and go to Deuteronomy, 00:08:40,400 --> 00:08:47,400 we're going to skip back and forth a little bit, 00:08:47,400 --> 00:08:49,200 but I want you to go to Deuteronomy chapter 18, 00:08:49,200 --> 00:08:52,800 Deuteronomy chapter 18, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. 00:08:52,800 --> 00:08:57,000 So, just a few books to your right. 00:08:57,000 --> 00:09:03,000 Go a few blocks to the right. 00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:07,600 Deuteronomy 18. 00:09:07,600 --> 00:09:11,800 Time to turn there too. 00:09:11,800 --> 00:09:32,800 Now, we're going to see what Moses said. 00:09:32,800 --> 00:09:34,800 This is toward the end of Moses' ministry with the people of Israel. 00:09:34,800 --> 00:09:42,800 And look what Moses is telling them. 00:09:42,800 --> 00:09:45,400 He's going to remind them of the time when they came to that mountain 00:09:45,400 --> 00:09:50,800 where the people were afraid and they backed way off from God and says, 00:09:50,800 --> 00:09:55,200 "Hey, we need a mediator. We need a middleman. 00:09:55,200 --> 00:09:59,800 We need someone to go between us." 00:09:59,800 --> 00:10:02,800 If you'll look here now, Moses is going to remind them of that time. 00:10:02,800 --> 00:10:06,800 If you look with me in verse 15, Deuteronomy 18, 15, 00:10:06,800 --> 00:10:09,800 look what Moses tells the people. 00:10:09,800 --> 00:10:13,800 He says, "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee. 00:10:13,800 --> 00:10:21,800 Of thy brethren, like unto me, unto him ye shall hear, 00:10:21,800 --> 00:10:27,800 according to all that thou desirest to the Lord thy God in Horeb, 00:10:27,800 --> 00:10:32,800 in the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, 00:10:32,800 --> 00:10:36,800 neither let me see this great fire anymore, that I dine not.'" 00:10:36,800 --> 00:10:40,800 So, let's just pause there a minute and break down what we just read. 00:10:40,800 --> 00:10:45,800 Moses is telling these people something very important. 00:10:45,800 --> 00:10:47,800 Number one, Moses is not the deliverer. 00:10:47,800 --> 00:10:50,800 He could deliver them from Pharaoh by the power of God. 00:10:50,800 --> 00:10:54,800 He could deliver them out of the nation of Egypt. 00:10:54,800 --> 00:10:56,800 But he couldn't deliver them from sin, Satan, and death. 00:10:56,800 --> 00:10:59,800 He was only a prototype. 00:10:59,800 --> 00:11:01,800 There had to be a greater because, remember, 00:11:01,800 --> 00:11:04,800 we looked at baptism already a little bit in here. 00:11:04,800 --> 00:11:11,800 And we've baptized Tanya not too long ago. 00:11:11,800 --> 00:11:17,800 And we looked at how you can wash away the dirtiness on the outside with water, 00:11:17,800 --> 00:11:25,800 but that doesn't get you clean on the inside where the sin is. 00:11:25,800 --> 00:11:29,800 Well, in the same way, Moses was a picture of that. 00:11:29,800 --> 00:11:32,800 He could get them out of one bondage, 00:11:32,800 --> 00:11:36,800 but he could not get them out of the other bondage. 00:11:36,800 --> 00:11:39,800 This is what the true deliverer has to do. 00:11:39,800 --> 00:11:42,800 And so, Moses tells the people, here's what's going to happen. 00:11:42,800 --> 00:11:46,800 Verse 15, "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet." 00:11:46,800 --> 00:11:50,800 Now, you should, depending on what translation you have, 00:11:50,800 --> 00:11:53,800 most translations, the word "prophet" will be a capital P. 00:11:53,800 --> 00:11:57,800 Everyone's like that? 00:11:57,800 --> 00:11:59,800 And whenever you see something like that in the Scriptures, 00:11:59,800 --> 00:12:02,800 it's referring to a divine word. 00:12:02,800 --> 00:12:07,800 It's going to be a prophecy relating to the coming Savior 00:12:07,800 --> 00:12:11,800 or something related to God, divinity. 00:12:11,800 --> 00:12:14,800 And so, out of respect in the English language, 00:12:14,800 --> 00:12:17,800 they capitalize that P there. 00:12:17,800 --> 00:12:20,800 And so, this is just giving you a heads up 00:12:20,800 --> 00:12:23,800 if you see something like this, 00:12:23,800 --> 00:12:25,800 that it's relating to a prophecy or a reference to God. 00:12:25,800 --> 00:12:31,800 And so, he's saying God's going to raise up unto thee. 00:12:31,800 --> 00:12:35,800 In other words, he's going to bring you a prophet. 00:12:35,800 --> 00:12:38,800 And let's see this prophet here, 00:12:38,800 --> 00:12:43,800 because now what we see is Moses, 00:12:43,800 --> 00:12:47,800 because Moses says this prophet is going to be, 00:12:47,800 --> 00:12:49,800 if you'll look in verse 15, 00:12:49,800 --> 00:12:51,800 "From the midst of that brethren, like unto me." 00:12:51,800 --> 00:12:55,800 You'll see where he says, "Like unto me." 00:12:55,800 --> 00:12:57,800 All right, so Moses now is not only a picture of a deliverer, 00:12:57,800 --> 00:13:03,800 not only a picture of a mediator, 00:13:03,800 --> 00:13:06,800 but now he's a picture of a prophet, you see. 00:13:06,800 --> 00:13:09,800 And what does a prophet do? Abraham, thank you." 00:22:56,800 --> 00:23:00,800 So God gave this to Abraham by promise. 00:23:00,800 --> 00:23:07,800 No law has been given yet. 00:23:07,800 --> 00:23:10,800 But the law is I tell you to do this and you do it, right? 00:23:10,800 --> 00:23:17,800 Now that's their performance, okay? 00:23:17,800 --> 00:23:20,800 The law is performance. 00:23:20,800 --> 00:23:22,800 You do this, if you can do all of this, you'll live. 00:23:22,800 --> 00:23:26,800 Or you have the promise, you're incapable of doing all of this, 00:23:26,800 --> 00:23:32,800 so I'll do it for you and then you can live. How about that? 00:23:32,800 --> 00:23:36,800 Now that's what I need, okay? That's what I need. 00:23:36,800 --> 00:23:40,800 And so in the book of Galatians, you had some false teachers coming in 00:23:40,800 --> 00:23:47,800 and saying, "Hey, not just the promise you need the performance to." 00:23:47,800 --> 00:23:54,800 And when they're doing that, what they're trying to do is say, 00:23:54,800 --> 00:23:59,800 "Hold on, God. I'll walk between those pieces with you. 00:23:59,800 --> 00:24:04,800 You're incapable of doing this by yourself." 00:24:04,800 --> 00:24:10,800 And they're over there trying to rouse Abraham up from his deadly sleep 00:24:10,800 --> 00:24:16,800 and trying to get him on through there and say, 00:24:16,800 --> 00:24:18,800 "Oh, this is what you have to do. You've got to go through the pieces too." 00:24:18,800 --> 00:24:21,800 But that's not how God did it. That's not how the covenant was given. 00:24:21,800 --> 00:24:25,800 And so let's go ahead and look here now. 00:24:25,800 --> 00:24:32,800 Verse 7 of Galatians 3, "Know you therefore that they which are of faith, 00:24:32,800 --> 00:24:38,800 the same are the children of Abraham, and the Scripture for seeing that God 00:24:38,800 --> 00:24:41,800 would justify the heathen through faith, preach before the gospel unto Abraham, 00:24:41,800 --> 00:24:46,800 saying, 'And thee shall all nations be blessed.' 00:24:46,800 --> 00:24:49,800 So they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham." 00:24:49,800 --> 00:24:52,800 In other words, those who believe the promise God gave, as Abraham did, 00:24:52,800 --> 00:24:56,800 they receive the blessing of Abraham. 00:24:56,800 --> 00:24:58,800 What do you do with a promise? 00:24:58,800 --> 00:25:02,800 If I say, "Jeff, I want a promise to come paint your house," 00:25:02,800 --> 00:25:12,800 which I will never make that promise, I assure you. 00:25:12,800 --> 00:25:14,800 And he would not let me because it would be drips all over. 00:25:14,800 --> 00:25:17,800 But if I said, "Jeff, I want a promise to come paint your house next Saturday 00:25:17,800 --> 00:25:21,800 while you're out of town, and when you come back after the weekend, 00:25:21,800 --> 00:25:25,800 your house will have a fresh coat of paint on it, no charge," 00:25:25,800 --> 00:25:29,800 now that's a promise I just make him, right? 00:25:29,800 --> 00:25:32,800 Now what does Jeff do with that promise? 00:25:32,800 --> 00:25:38,800 He just had to believe it or reject it and say, 00:25:38,800 --> 00:25:42,800 "No, I don't want my house painted." 00:25:42,800 --> 00:25:45,800 But there's no performance required on his part. 00:25:45,800 --> 00:25:48,800 So they which be of faith, they receive that blessing that Abraham received 00:25:48,800 --> 00:25:53,800 just by believing the promise that God gave. 00:25:53,800 --> 00:25:56,800 In fact, look here. 00:25:56,800 --> 00:25:59,800 It says, in verse 12, "The law is not of faith. 00:25:59,800 --> 00:26:06,800 The man that doeth them shall live, but the man that doeth them shall live in them." 00:26:06,800 --> 00:26:10,800 In other words, the law isn't a promise. 00:26:10,800 --> 00:26:12,800 The law demands placed on man. 00:26:12,800 --> 00:26:16,800 You don't believe the law. 00:26:16,800 --> 00:26:18,800 You have to obey the law. 00:26:18,800 --> 00:26:20,800 So you're either going to be accepted by God one of two ways, 00:26:20,800 --> 00:26:24,800 either by believing his promise or through your own performance of his commands. 00:26:24,800 --> 00:26:30,800 It's one of the two, you see. 00:26:30,800 --> 00:26:33,800 And in this case, when God gave them the law, they needed a mediator. 00:26:33,800 --> 00:26:40,800 They needed a mediator. 00:26:40,800 --> 00:26:42,800 Now that's important for us to understand that. 00:26:42,800 --> 00:26:45,800 Let's go ahead and go, if you would, a little bit further in verse 19, Galatians 19. 00:26:45,800 --> 00:26:53,800 "Wherefore then serve with the law?" 00:26:53,800 --> 00:26:55,800 In other words, what's the law's purpose? 00:26:55,800 --> 00:26:58,800 What purpose does the law serve? 00:26:58,800 --> 00:27:01,800 And Paul explained it was added because of transgressions 00:27:01,800 --> 00:27:05,800 till the seed should come to whom the promise was made. 00:27:05,800 --> 00:27:09,800 Now remember back in the book of Genesis 00:27:09,800 --> 00:27:12,800 where God said, "I'll put enmity between your seed and the woman's seed." 00:27:12,800 --> 00:27:16,800 Remember? 00:27:16,800 --> 00:27:17,800 And then remember when God renewed that to Abraham, 00:27:17,800 --> 00:27:20,800 shined a little bit more light on that and said, 00:27:20,800 --> 00:27:22,800 "In your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed?" 00:27:22,800 --> 00:27:26,800 That's speaking of Christ. 00:27:26,800 --> 00:27:28,800 And so what's the point in the law? 00:27:28,800 --> 00:27:30,800 It was added because of man's sin 00:27:30,800 --> 00:27:34,800 until the seed should come to whom the promise was made. 00:27:34,800 --> 00:27:37,800 Now watch this. 00:27:37,800 --> 00:27:40,800 He says in verse 19, "Wherefore then serve with the law, 00:27:40,800 --> 00:27:45,800 it was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made, 00:27:45,800 --> 00:27:49,800 and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a..." 00:27:49,800 --> 00:27:52,800 What? 00:27:52,800 --> 00:27:53,800 "Mediator." 00:27:53,800 --> 00:27:56,800 Now remember, Paul has been talking about the promise God gave Abraham. 00:27:56,800 --> 00:28:01,800 How many parties went between those two pieces? 00:28:01,800 --> 00:28:04,800 Just one. 00:28:04,800 --> 00:28:05,800 That's right, Jonathan. 00:28:05,800 --> 00:28:07,800 Now look what he says in verse 20. 00:28:07,800 --> 00:28:09,800 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one. 00:28:09,800 --> 00:28:14,800 Isn't that right? 00:28:14,800 --> 00:28:15,800 You don't have a mediator between one party. 00:28:15,800 --> 00:28:20,800 You have a mediator between two parties. 00:28:20,800 --> 00:28:24,800 So what man needs, if you're going to go through the law here, 00:28:24,800 --> 00:28:29,800 you've got to have a mediator, right? 00:28:29,800 --> 00:28:31,800 And so the law demands this mediator. 00:28:31,800 --> 00:28:34,800 And a mediator is not a mediator of one. 00:28:34,800 --> 00:28:36,800 He's a mediator of two parties. 00:28:36,800 --> 00:28:39,800 This law business here is not going to work out for us if we're trying to do the law on our own. 00:28:39,800 --> 00:28:46,800 The only way the law can be worked out is through the work of a mediator, okay? 00:28:46,800 --> 00:28:51,800 And so let's go ahead and look here now. 00:28:51,800 --> 00:28:56,800 In verse 21, "Is the law then against the promises of God?" 00:28:56,800 --> 00:29:01,800 Is the law contrary to God's promise? 00:29:01,800 --> 00:29:03,800 God forbid. And there was no way. 00:29:03,800 --> 00:29:06,800 For if there had been a law given which could have given life, 00:29:06,800 --> 00:29:09,800 verily or truly righteousness should have been by the law. 00:29:09,800 --> 00:29:14,800 In other words, now the law is good. 00:29:14,800 --> 00:29:16,800 The law tells us what we should do. 00:29:16,800 --> 00:29:18,800 But it's incapable of giving us the life we need. 00:29:18,800 --> 00:29:22,800 Because all the law does is point out our failures. 00:29:22,800 --> 00:29:27,800 It points out where we're wrong. 00:29:27,800 --> 00:29:29,800 When you're driving down the road, 00:29:29,800 --> 00:29:36,800 and we're on our way up here this morning. 00:29:36,800 --> 00:29:39,800 I've got these folks from Canada here with me, 00:29:39,800 --> 00:29:41,800 and I told you they'd be here this morning. 00:29:41,800 --> 00:29:44,800 And they're not used to driving quite so fast as our 75-mile-hour speed limit down here, all right? 00:29:44,800 --> 00:29:52,800 But on our way up here, we passed all these speed limits. 00:29:52,800 --> 00:29:56,800 And the speed limits could only look at us. 00:29:56,800 --> 00:29:59,800 If we're going over the speed limit, all the speed limit could do is, 00:29:59,800 --> 00:30:02,800 "Ah, you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong." 00:30:02,800 --> 00:30:06,800 But the speed limit has no--the law has no power to control my pedal, right? 00:30:06,800 --> 00:30:13,800 That's all in here and here in my fallen nature. 00:30:13,800 --> 00:30:17,800 You may go a little up or a little below or something like that. 00:30:17,800 --> 00:30:20,800 But the law is only capable of pointing out your sin. 00:30:20,800 --> 00:30:25,800 And so what purpose does the law serve? 00:30:25,800 --> 00:30:28,800 Why did God get there on Mount Sinai and start wagging His finger at these people? 00:30:28,800 --> 00:30:34,800 These people weren't guilty of breaking the law. 00:30:34,800 --> 00:30:36,800 They would've just stayed right there. 00:30:36,800 --> 00:30:39,800 But they knew it was convicting their conscience, and they knew, 00:30:39,800 --> 00:30:42,800 "Man, we've broken these commandments, and they're going the opposite way." 00:30:42,800 --> 00:30:47,800 The law did not bring them to God. It had no power to bring them to God. 00:30:47,800 --> 00:30:50,800 All the law could do was tell them, "You are wrong, and you have to answer to a scary, 00:30:50,800 --> 00:30:56,800 holy, and righteous God when you do wrong." 00:30:56,800 --> 00:31:01,800 It's all the law could do. 00:31:01,800 --> 00:31:03,800 So is the law really serving a purpose? 00:31:03,800 --> 00:31:06,800 Yes. It's serving a great purpose. 00:31:06,800 --> 00:31:10,800 The law becomes a teacher teaching us that we can't handle this two-party contract. 00:31:10,800 --> 00:31:19,800 We need the contract of... there I go again... contract of Abraham. 00:31:19,800 --> 00:31:26,800 We have a one-party contract where God does all the work, 00:31:26,800 --> 00:31:31,800 and we just receive the benefit of the gift. 00:31:31,800 --> 00:31:34,800 That's what's happening here. 00:31:34,800 --> 00:31:37,800 And that's why Moses is telling them, "Hey, look, you're right. 00:31:37,800 --> 00:31:41,800 You do need a mediator. 00:31:41,800 --> 00:31:44,800 That's the only way this law is going to work. 00:31:44,800 --> 00:31:46,800 Someone's got to come in and bridge the gap between a holy God and an unholy man." 00:31:46,800 --> 00:31:53,800 And that's going to be the prophet God sends. 00:31:53,800 --> 00:31:56,800 He'll be the deliverer. 00:31:56,800 --> 00:31:59,800 He'll be your mediator. 00:31:59,800 --> 00:32:02,800 He'll be your prophet. 00:32:02,800 --> 00:32:03,800 He'll tell you what you need to know. 00:32:03,800 --> 00:32:05,800 He'll do what you can't do for you. 00:32:05,800 --> 00:32:07,800 He'll go between you and God and reconcile the two parties. 00:32:07,800 --> 00:32:12,800 Let's go on now, if you would, and... 00:32:12,800 --> 00:32:18,800 Oh, you know what? 00:32:18,800 --> 00:32:19,800 There's one part here in Galatians I want to share with you real quick before we go. 00:32:19,800 --> 00:32:26,800 Look here in verse 23. 00:32:26,800 --> 00:32:29,800 "But before faith came, we were kept under the law, 00:32:29,800 --> 00:32:32,800 shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 00:32:32,800 --> 00:32:35,800 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster, 00:32:35,800 --> 00:32:38,800 to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." 00:32:38,800 --> 00:32:46,800 The law was our teacher. 00:32:46,800 --> 00:32:49,800 Let me tell you. 00:32:49,800 --> 00:32:52,800 When I was trying to become a Christian, 00:32:52,800 --> 00:32:55,800 and I was trying to make sure that I was going to go to heaven, 00:32:55,800 --> 00:32:57,800 I was going to be accepted by God, 00:32:57,800 --> 00:33:00,800 this is when I realized, okay, the Bible is true. 00:33:00,800 --> 00:33:03,800 I had to come to that point first. 00:33:03,800 --> 00:33:06,800 The Bible is true. 00:33:06,800 --> 00:33:09,800 And so I came to this point where I tried my best 00:33:09,800 --> 00:33:14,800 to surrender my life to God and live according to His law. 00:33:14,800 --> 00:33:20,800 And I was a highway patrolman at the time. 00:33:20,800 --> 00:33:22,800 I was in uniform. 00:33:22,800 --> 00:33:24,800 I represented the law of man here on earth. 00:33:24,800 --> 00:33:27,800 I enforced it. 00:33:27,800 --> 00:33:30,800 And trying to live my best under God's law, 00:33:30,800 --> 00:33:34,800 I found myself completely incapable. 00:33:34,800 --> 00:33:37,800 I found myself always coming short of His perfect requirements. 00:33:37,800 --> 00:33:45,800 And I remember even as a highway patrolman, 00:33:45,800 --> 00:33:47,800 I'm driving down the road in uniform. 00:33:47,800 --> 00:33:50,800 I got the power, there goes my muscles again, 00:33:50,800 --> 00:33:52,800 I got the power to stop cars, I got the power to detain people, 00:33:52,800 --> 00:33:55,800 I got the power to arrest to let them go. 00:33:55,800 --> 00:33:58,800 And I remember my own conscience as I'm driving down the road 00:33:58,800 --> 00:34:02,800 in a black and white car, who's going to stop me? 00:34:02,800 --> 00:34:07,800 And I remember in my own conscience, it was 55 back then. 00:34:07,800 --> 00:34:13,800 If my speedometer got a little over 55, oh. 00:34:13,800 --> 00:34:18,800 I'm sorry, God, I'm sorry, you know. 00:34:18,800 --> 00:34:22,800 And it seemed like I couldn't put one foot in front of the other 00:34:22,800 --> 00:34:25,800 without sinning somehow. 00:34:25,800 --> 00:34:27,800 A little dirty thought come into my mind when you don't want it to. 00:34:27,800 --> 00:34:31,800 Oh, God, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. 00:34:31,800 --> 00:34:34,800 What was the law doing? 00:34:34,800 --> 00:34:36,800 It was showing me, Richard, it's useless, give up. 00:34:36,800 --> 00:34:42,800 The more I tried climbing up that mountain to get close to God by His law, 00:34:42,800 --> 00:34:48,800 the higher that mountain became, the hotter that fire became, 00:34:48,800 --> 00:34:51,800 the louder that thunder became, the more the earth shook. 00:34:51,800 --> 00:34:55,800 And the more God's warning of if you try to get to me through this mountain, 00:34:55,800 --> 00:34:59,800 the penalty is death. 00:34:59,800 --> 00:35:03,800 The penalty of sin is death. 00:35:03,800 --> 00:35:06,800 And I was constantly reminded the soul that sins, it shall die. 00:35:06,800 --> 00:35:16,800 Do you see then how God's law became my schoolmaster? 00:35:16,800 --> 00:35:22,800 It was teaching me a lesson. 00:35:22,800 --> 00:35:26,800 And so, having graduated the school of the law, 00:35:26,800 --> 00:35:34,800 I eventually was told when I read a book from a pastor in England, Charles Spurgeon. 00:35:34,800 --> 00:35:42,800 And Charles Spurgeon kept pointing me away from the mountain I was trying to climb, 00:35:42,800 --> 00:35:48,800 from the law I was trying to perform. 00:35:48,800 --> 00:35:51,800 He pointed me away from that mountain to another mountain called Calvary. 00:35:51,800 --> 00:35:55,800 He really is a mountain, but anyway, he points me to that Calvary. 00:35:55,800 --> 00:35:59,800 He points me to what the promised Savior did for me. 00:35:59,800 --> 00:36:04,800 He obeyed the law for me. 00:36:04,800 --> 00:36:07,800 He died on the cross for my sins. 00:36:07,800 --> 00:36:10,800 And so, in doing that, I realized, wait a second, 00:36:10,800 --> 00:36:15,800 I don't have to keep the law to please God. 00:36:15,800 --> 00:36:19,800 A substitute has kept the law in my place. 00:36:19,800 --> 00:36:25,800 At that point, I graduated the school of the law, 00:36:25,800 --> 00:36:32,800 and I entered into the school of faith. 00:36:32,800 --> 00:36:35,800 I simply believed the promise that God gave Abraham, 00:36:35,800 --> 00:36:40,800 that God gave Isaac, that God gave Jacob, that God gave me. 00:36:40,800 --> 00:36:45,800 Make sense? 00:36:45,800 --> 00:36:47,800 So, now with that understood, let's go to Exodus 25. 00:36:47,800 --> 00:36:53,800 Back to Exodus 25. 00:36:53,800 --> 00:36:55,800 Or sorry, back to Exodus. 00:36:55,800 --> 00:36:57,800 Exodus 25. 00:36:57,800 --> 00:36:59,800 [ 00:36:59,800 --> 00:37:00,800 Jesus' name] 00:37:00,800 --> 00:37:20,800 Moses has come down to the people and talked to them. 00:37:20,800 --> 00:37:24,800 They told Moses, "We can't hear you.
