Episode Transcript
Last week we left off with the people who were unable to get close to God because of the law.
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:13,000
They were guilty, they were sinners, and they had to put boundaries around the mountains.
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:19,000
And we've learned that all of us have broken those Ten Commandments.
00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:25,000
And that we're all guilty before God.
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:30,000
And so if you'll look now in Exodus 25, let me turn back there.
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:37,000
Verse 1, it says, "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 'Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering,
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:44,000
of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart, ye shall take my offering.'"
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:50,000
In other words, I want people to bring me something. And the reason they were going to be bringing it is because God was going to do something very special with an offering.
00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:59,000
If you'll look in verse 23, "And this is the offering which ye shall take of them, gold and silver and brass and blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen and goats hair,
00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:08,000
and ramskins dyed red and badger skins and shiteen wood, oil for the light, spices for anointing oil and for sweet incense,
00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:17,000
onyx stones and stones to be set in the ephod and in the breastplate."
00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:21,000
And here's our key verse in verse 8, "And let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them."
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So the law could not bring God and man together. The law showed man how guilty they were.
00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:38,000
The law showed the difference between a holy God and an unholy people.
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:44,000
So we learned that God giving us a bunch of rules, have you all ever had trouble keeping rules?
00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:53,000
You all, every one of us. No, nobody is. So, you know, I know for me, as I told you all last week,
00:01:53,000 --> 00:02:03,000
when I tried to obey God's rules, even though I tried the best I could, I found that no matter how hard I tried, I still came short of keeping them.
00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:15,000
And even if you can keep them the best you can on the outside, still there's that part of you on the inside that rebels, even though you may not want to.
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:27,000
And so God giving us rules was like that speed limit sign that we passed when we were driving 70 and a 55 or something.
00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:36,000
The speed limit, the law, does not give you the ability to obey. It only gives you the requirement to obey.
00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:48,000
And that's the way it is with God's law. God's law doesn't give us the ability to obey.
00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:54,000
But when we pass that law, like the speed limit sign, it shows us you're wrong as you're going by.
00:02:54,000 --> 00:03:00,000
You're wrong as you're walking through life. And so how do we take God, who's up on the mountain, and man who's down here on earth,
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:11,000
man is holy, I'm sorry, man is unholy, God is holy, how do we join them together?
00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:16,000
God says, "Well, do it through a sanctuary. Let them make me a sanctuary that I, the God on the mountain,
00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:24,000
who's separate from these people, can get off the mountain and come dwell among them."
00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:32,000
Because ultimately, God doesn't want us to be separate from him. He wants to reconcile.
00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:39,000
Remember, we looked at a mediator last week. He wants to reconcile the differences between us
00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:47,000
and make us right and make us to where we can dwell with him. Good morning. Good to see you all this morning.
00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:58,000
We're in Exodus chapter 25, if you all want to turn there, and we'll give you time to catch up.
00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:03,000
For those online, we just had some guests come in, which we're very thankful for.
00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:13,000
Exodus chapter 25.
00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:30,000
Be the second book in your Bible. Genesis and Exodus in the 25th chapter.
00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:40,000
And as you're turning there, I was telling them, just reminding them about last week,
00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:45,000
when the children of Israel came up to Mount Sinai, God's Ten Commandments caused them to realize how unholy they were.
00:04:45,000 --> 00:04:55,000
They could not approach God. They were driven from God because he was holy, they were unholy.
00:04:55,000 --> 00:05:05,000
And so the law, God's law, did not give them the ability to be holy. It simply pointed out their unholyness.
00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:14,000
It simply showed them that they were sinners.
00:05:14,000 --> 00:05:16,000
And so the only way that man and God could come back and be reconciled together wasn't through the law.
00:05:16,000 --> 00:05:23,000
The law drove Israel away. The only way it could happen was through the work of this sanctuary.
00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:29,000
We're looking now in Exodus chapter 25 verse 8. God said, "And let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them."
00:05:29,000 --> 00:05:37,000
And so what we're looking at today is the work of this sanctuary.
00:05:37,000 --> 00:05:43,000
This sanctuary, like everything else, remember when we were looking at the animals that God slew to cover Adam and Eve in the garden,
00:05:43,000 --> 00:05:53,000
that pointed to the Savior to come, when we looked at the ark that delivered Noah and his family from the flood, that pointed to the Savior to come.
00:05:53,000 --> 00:06:03,000
When we saw the ram that took Isaac's place on the mountain that pointed to the Savior to come,
00:06:03,000 --> 00:06:10,000
the lamb on Pass overnight pointed to the Savior to come. Well, what do you think this sanctuary is going to be about?
00:06:10,000 --> 00:06:17,000
It's going to be pointing them to the Savior to come.
00:06:17,000 --> 00:06:21,000
The promised Savior is the theme throughout the whole Bible.
00:06:21,000 --> 00:06:28,000
What man did in his sin and God's solution through a promised Savior.
00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:36,000
Genesis starts out telling us how we went wrong and what God promised to do to fix it.
00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:42,000
Revelation, the last of the Bible, tells us how it's going to come out in the end and how the Savior fixed it.
00:06:42,000 --> 00:06:50,000
That's basically it. Everything in the middle, it just flows that continual story all the way to the end,
00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:58,000
like a skeletal system, head to toe. And all the other doctrines are the meat, you know, and organs and everything.
00:06:58,000 --> 00:07:06,000
And so he says, "Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them."
00:07:06,000 --> 00:07:10,000
Now look in verse 9, "According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle
00:07:10,000 --> 00:07:18,000
and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall you make it."
00:07:18,000 --> 00:07:22,000
Now this is very important.
00:07:22,000 --> 00:07:26,000
"According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all the instruments, even so shall you make it."
00:07:26,000 --> 00:07:33,000
So what does that tell us about this sanctuary?
00:07:33,000 --> 00:07:36,000
It doesn't mean that man's going to get to come down and say, "Well, you know what? I'll get some interior designers here.
00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:44,000
I'll get some of my best construction crew. And we're going to come up with a really great tabernacle.
00:07:44,000 --> 00:07:54,000
And we're going to make a real nice one."
00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:58,000
No. It's not going to be man's ideas.
00:07:58,000 --> 00:08:03,000
It's not going to be how he envisions what a tabernacle should look like.
00:08:03,000 --> 00:08:08,000
If you want to know what man envisions a tabernacle should look like, look at all the false religions in this world.
00:08:08,000 --> 00:08:16,000
You're going to have man's imagination.
00:08:16,000 --> 00:08:21,000
I don't want to follow a set of man-made ideas.
00:08:21,000 --> 00:08:28,000
I want my Creator to reveal Himself to me and to show me truth.
00:08:28,000 --> 00:08:36,000
And so God said, "How are you going to make this tabernacle according to all that I show you?"
00:08:36,000 --> 00:08:43,000
The way I show you to make it.
00:08:43,000 --> 00:08:46,000
We have God here. We have man here.
00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:54,000
We have sin that separates God and man.
00:08:54,000 --> 00:09:04,000
The law couldn't bring them together because all the law did was show man how he's broken it.
00:09:04,000 --> 00:09:11,000
He couldn't make him good, and he showed him how bad he was.
00:09:11,000 --> 00:09:15,000
There's an old saying that if you want to see how crooked a stick is, just lay a straight one down beside it.
00:09:15,000 --> 00:09:24,000
And then it'll show you. That's what the law did. It showed him how crooked they were.
00:09:24,000 --> 00:09:28,000
Which, by the way, is what our English word "wicked" means. It means crooked.
00:09:28,000 --> 00:09:32,000
Which is why we say, "Well, that man's a crook."
00:09:32,000 --> 00:09:36,000
It means they're bent out of the straight way that God's given.
00:09:36,000 --> 00:09:41,000
So we have this sin here, and so God says a sanctuary is going to fix this problem.
00:09:41,000 --> 00:09:47,000
A sanctuary is going to allow a holy God to come dwell among his people.
00:09:47,000 --> 00:09:56,000
It'll take the sin issue out of the way the sanctuary will.
00:09:56,000 --> 00:10:02,000
As long as that sin issue is there, then we still have God and man separated.
00:10:02,000 --> 00:10:09,000
So the sanctuary's got to do it, but it's got to be according to, if you look back in verse 9,
00:10:09,000 --> 00:10:15,000
after the pattern of the tabernacle, the pattern of the instrument, you'll see that word pattern.
00:10:15,000 --> 00:10:21,000
God's going to give them a pattern, and they have to go by that pattern.
00:10:21,000 --> 00:10:26,000
When we have the Bible, in the Bible, God gives us the pattern for what we call salvation.
00:10:26,000 --> 00:10:38,000
We all have to be saved from sin. We all have to be saved from death.
00:10:38,000 --> 00:10:44,000
Every one of us are marching toward that grave right now.
00:10:44,000 --> 00:10:47,000
And the only way to overcome sin and death, which results because of our sin,
00:10:47,000 --> 00:10:55,000
the only way to overcome it is according to the pattern that God gives us.
00:10:55,000 --> 00:11:00,000
You see, God is life. I used to, I did this in this class.
00:11:00,000 --> 00:11:05,000
I would go out and when Adam and Eve sinned, and maybe I'll do that again one day,
00:11:05,000 --> 00:11:13,000
I used to go out and I would break off a branch out of one of our shrubs.
00:11:13,000 --> 00:11:19,000
And I'd bring it in, I'd show everybody the day that I taught on Adam and Eve sinning.
00:11:19,000 --> 00:11:24,000
And the branch looked great. It may have little flowers on it and everything,
00:11:24,000 --> 00:11:28,000
depending on what season it was, you know, and nice green leaves.
00:11:28,000 --> 00:11:31,000
And I would take it and I'd tape it up here.
00:11:31,000 --> 00:11:36,000
And then as we teach throughout the year, everyone will get to come in
00:11:36,000 --> 00:11:41,000
and see what happens to that branch. It starts weathering, kind of like us.
00:11:41,000 --> 00:11:47,000
It starts getting wrinkles, gray hair, you know, everything else.
00:11:47,000 --> 00:11:51,000
And next thing you know, it's all dried up and brittle.
00:11:51,000 --> 00:11:54,000
You say, well, when did it die? It died the moment it was cut off from its source of life.
00:11:54,000 --> 00:12:03,000
And so when Adam and Eve ate from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of God
00:12:03,000 --> 00:12:07,000
and Eve that day, they were like that branch. They were cut off from their source of life.
00:12:07,000 --> 00:12:11,000
They may have been green for a while. We may be green for a while.
00:12:11,000 --> 00:12:15,000
But eventually, we get dried up and weathered like that branch.
00:12:15,000 --> 00:12:19,000
And so as long as sin stays between us and our Creator, we're cut off from our source of life.
00:12:19,000 --> 00:12:27,000
So instead of having everlasting life from an everlasting God, we have everlasting death without Him.
00:12:27,000 --> 00:12:33,000
It's got to be overcome. And the only way to do it is to make it after the pattern God's shown,
00:12:33,000 --> 00:12:38,000
as every other man-made religion will fail.
00:12:38,000 --> 00:12:43,000
We'll look at that some this morning in our message, by the way.
00:12:43,000 --> 00:12:46,000
Now, let's go ahead and look now in verse 10, Exodus 25 verse 10.
00:12:46,000 --> 00:12:53,000
It says, "And they shall make an ark of shittim wood,
00:12:53,000 --> 00:12:56,000
two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof,
00:12:56,000 --> 00:12:58,000
and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof,
00:12:58,000 --> 00:13:00,000
and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
00:13:00,000 --> 00:13:02,000
And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold,
00:13:02,000 --> 00:13:04,000
with in and without shalt thou overlay it,
00:13:04,000 --> 00:13:07,000
and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.
00:13:07,000 --> 00:13:12,000
And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it,
00:13:12,000 --> 00:13:15,000
and put them in the four corners thereof,
00:13:15,000 --> 00:13:17,000
and the two rings shall be on one side of it,
00:13:17,000 --> 00:13:19,000
and the two rings on the other side of it.
00:13:19,000 --> 00:13:21,000
And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood,
00:13:21,000 --> 00:13:23,000
and overlay them with gold,
00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:25,000
and thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark,
00:13:25,000 --> 00:13:28,000
that the ark may be borne with them."
00:13:28,000 --> 00:13:31,000
Alright, now look, since we only have so much time in here,
00:13:31,000 --> 00:13:36,000
here's what we're going to do.
00:13:36,000 --> 00:13:37,000
I'm going to start drawing a little picture.
00:13:37,000 --> 00:13:45,000
This sanctuary, and you can go back and read from Exodus 25, 26, 27,
00:13:45,000 --> 00:13:51,000
you can go on and read all the details,
00:13:51,000 --> 00:13:54,000
but this sanctuary,
00:13:54,000 --> 00:13:59,000
it looks something like this,
00:13:59,000 --> 00:14:05,000
it's going to be a tent, a tabernacle.
00:14:05,000 --> 00:14:08,000
It's going to be divided into two sections.
00:14:08,000 --> 00:14:12,000
This will be holy place,
00:14:12,000 --> 00:14:15,000
means special and set apart.
00:14:15,000 --> 00:14:17,000
This shall be the most holy place.
00:14:17,000 --> 00:14:20,000
It's more special and more set apart than any other place in the sanctuary.
00:14:20,000 --> 00:14:26,000
Or you may see in the Bible, holy and holy of holies,
00:14:26,000 --> 00:14:31,000
which basically means most holy, okay?
00:14:31,000 --> 00:14:33,000
In the most holy place is going to be this ark of the covenant, okay?
00:14:33,000 --> 00:14:38,000
Now remember, the covenant is this law that God gave on Sinai.
00:14:38,000 --> 00:14:44,000
The only way that God can accept these people is if they obey His law perfectly.
00:14:44,000 --> 00:14:50,000
The problem is, nobody can.
00:14:50,000 --> 00:14:53,000
Not because the law is bad, not because the law is too strict.
00:14:53,000 --> 00:14:58,000
The law is good, but the people are not.
00:14:58,000 --> 00:15:03,000
So we have an ark of the covenant.
00:15:03,000 --> 00:15:06,000
Now remember, an ark is like a box.
00:15:06,000 --> 00:15:08,000
Remember Moses was an ark of bull rushes.
00:15:08,000 --> 00:15:12,000
We had an ark that had Noah and his family in it.
00:15:12,000 --> 00:15:15,000
It's a container.
00:15:15,000 --> 00:15:18,000
And so you're going to have this box made of shetim wood.
00:15:18,000 --> 00:15:21,000
I'm going to make a little rectangle here.
00:15:21,000 --> 00:15:24,000
And it's going to go in the most holy place.
00:15:24,000 --> 00:15:27,000
And if you'll notice, it talked about rings.
00:15:27,000 --> 00:15:30,000
It's going to have these little rings.
00:15:30,000 --> 00:15:33,000
And there's going to be staves.
00:15:33,000 --> 00:15:35,000
So basically, there's going to be sticks or poles that run through these rings.
00:15:35,000 --> 00:15:41,000
Because in this ark, there's going to be the Ten Commandments.
00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:49,000
All right?
00:15:49,000 --> 00:15:50,000
That's why it's called the ark of the covenant, the ark of the law that God gave.
00:15:50,000 --> 00:15:56,000
God will meet with the people just on the top of this ark.
00:15:56,000 --> 00:16:02,000
So it's super, super holy, most holy.
00:16:02,000 --> 00:16:06,000
So the people can't touch the ark.
00:16:06,000 --> 00:16:11,000
So when they carry the ark, and it's the only special people who can carry the ark,
00:16:11,000 --> 00:16:15,000
they put poles through the rings and they touch the poles
00:16:15,000 --> 00:16:18,000
and they transport the ark as they move toward the Promised Land.
00:16:18,000 --> 00:16:22,000
But they can't touch the ark itself. They'll die.
00:16:22,000 --> 00:16:25,000
So here's this ark. It's going to be made of wood.
00:16:25,000 --> 00:16:28,000
It's going to be overlaid with gold.
00:16:28,000 --> 00:16:30,000
Let's go ahead and look here and look in verse 16.
00:16:30,000 --> 00:16:36,000
"And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony," that's the law,
00:16:36,000 --> 00:16:40,000
"which thou shalt give thee." So the law goes inside the ark.
00:16:40,000 --> 00:16:45,000
Let's look here in verse 17.
00:16:45,000 --> 00:16:49,000
"And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold.
00:16:49,000 --> 00:16:53,000
Two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof,
00:16:53,000 --> 00:16:56,000
and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof."
00:16:56,000 --> 00:16:58,000
You see how detailed this is?
00:16:58,000 --> 00:16:59,000
And it's got to be done exactly like God said.
00:16:59,000 --> 00:17:02,000
Exactly like God said.
00:17:02,000 --> 00:17:04,000
You don't vary to the left or to the right, or it's not going to work.
00:17:04,000 --> 00:17:09,000
So we have this mercy seat now.
00:17:09,000 --> 00:17:15,000
And so when we're looking at a seat,
00:17:15,000 --> 00:17:19,000
we're not talking about someone saying, "Oh, hop up here, have a seat."
00:17:19,000 --> 00:17:23,000
Okay, it's not a chair.
00:17:23,000 --> 00:17:25,000
But rather, and I'll appeal to the men here especially,
00:17:25,000 --> 00:17:30,000
but the ladies will understand too,
00:17:30,000 --> 00:17:32,000
if you have a lid on something, or if you have a top on something,
00:17:32,000 --> 00:17:40,000
and let's say it's got a gasket on it or something, you know,
00:17:40,000 --> 00:17:43,000
you want to make sure that it's seated properly.
00:17:43,000 --> 00:17:46,000
You see, that's the language we're using here with seat.
00:17:46,000 --> 00:17:49,000
So it's not a chair, it's a lid that fits on top of a box.
00:17:49,000 --> 00:17:55,000
And inside the box is God's law.
00:17:55,000 --> 00:17:58,000
Okay?
00:17:58,000 --> 00:17:59,000
But the neat thing about it is,
00:17:59,000 --> 00:18:02,000
this lid is what kind of lid? What kind of lid?
00:18:02,000 --> 00:18:09,000
What kind of seat?
00:18:09,000 --> 00:18:11,000
Mercy seat.
00:18:11,000 --> 00:18:12,000
Mercy seat.
00:18:12,000 --> 00:18:14,000
Ah! Now I tell you what, if there's one thing a sinner needs,
00:18:14,000 --> 00:18:20,000
if there's one thing a guilty party needs, it's what?
00:18:20,000 --> 00:18:24,000
It's mercy.
00:18:24,000 --> 00:18:26,000
The only way that God could come off that mountain
00:18:26,000 --> 00:18:31,000
and dwell among His people,
00:18:31,000 --> 00:18:33,000
that a holy God can dwell among unholy people,
00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:36,000
is on the basis of, sit with me, mercy.
00:18:36,000 --> 00:18:41,000
Mercy.
00:18:41,000 --> 00:18:43,000
So what we're going to do,
00:18:43,000 --> 00:18:46,000
as we go through and learn about the sanctuary,
00:18:46,000 --> 00:18:51,000
the sanctuary in the work of this tabernacle
00:18:51,000 --> 00:18:55,000
is going to define for us what mercy is.
00:18:55,000 --> 00:19:00,000
A lot of us would say, we would view mercy this way,
00:19:00,000 --> 00:19:04,000
we would think, well, you know,
00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:08,000
Jess is guilty and let's say I'm the judge,
00:19:08,000 --> 00:19:15,000
and Jess says,
00:19:15,000 --> 00:19:17,000
"Judge Fulton, I just ask you to have mercy.
00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:22,000
I know I broke the law.
00:19:22,000 --> 00:19:24,000
I know I stole that.
00:19:24,000 --> 00:19:26,000
I know I broke into Chris's house
00:19:26,000 --> 00:19:29,000
and stole his money and all that out of there,
00:19:29,000 --> 00:19:32,000
but I just asked for it."
00:19:32,000 --> 00:19:34,000
Yeah, he got all you had though.
00:19:34,000 --> 00:19:36,000
He just needs mercy.
00:19:36,000 --> 00:19:38,000
And so let's say that I say,
00:19:38,000 --> 00:19:42,000
well, I tell you what,
00:19:42,000 --> 00:19:44,000
I'm a kind and a loving judge.
00:19:44,000 --> 00:19:47,000
I give you mercy.
00:19:47,000 --> 00:19:50,000
And I just let them walk.
00:19:50,000 --> 00:19:53,000
Now, that's the thing, but that's true.
00:19:53,000 --> 00:19:57,000
Because if I extend mercy to the violator that way,
00:19:57,000 --> 00:20:04,000
I have now offended the violated.
00:20:04,000 --> 00:20:09,000
The victim now has not been made whole.
00:20:09,000 --> 00:20:14,000
Unless he can restore what he took away,
00:20:14,000 --> 00:20:20,000
then me extending him mercy gives him no satisfaction.
00:20:20,000 --> 00:20:25,000
That's not mercy.
00:20:25,000 --> 00:20:27,000
That's judicial corruption, you see.
00:20:27,000 --> 00:20:33,000
And so our idea of mercy,
00:20:33,000 --> 00:20:36,000
of just saying, "God be merciful,"
00:20:36,000 --> 00:20:38,000
and God says, "Okay, I'll be merciful.
00:20:38,000 --> 00:20:42,000
I love you all. I forgive you."
00:20:42,000 --> 00:20:46,000
It didn't work that way.
00:20:46,000 --> 00:20:48,000
That's the world's concept of mercy.
00:20:48,000 --> 00:20:50,000
I promise you it does not work that way.
00:20:50,000 --> 00:20:53,000
If on the other hand, I the judge...
00:20:53,000 --> 00:20:59,000
Now, you didn't spend all this money, had you?
00:20:59,000 --> 00:21:01,000
You didn't loan it.
00:21:01,000 --> 00:21:02,000
Hey, y'all ever heard anyone owe you money?
00:21:02,000 --> 00:21:04,000
And you go to...
00:21:04,000 --> 00:21:05,000
You have someone owe you money, you go to them.
00:21:05,000 --> 00:21:07,000
They said, "Man, I didn't spend all that. I'm sorry. It's gone."
00:21:07,000 --> 00:21:10,000
They couldn't pay you back.
00:21:10,000 --> 00:21:12,000
Oh, man, yeah. Next week never comes.
00:21:12,000 --> 00:21:15,000
Yeah.
00:21:15,000 --> 00:21:16,000
Now, you didn't loan all this money.
00:21:16,000 --> 00:21:18,000
You didn't spend it.
00:21:18,000 --> 00:21:20,000
He went to Las Vegas, spent every bit of it.
00:21:20,000 --> 00:21:23,000
It's gone.
00:21:23,000 --> 00:21:25,000
Now, how about this?
00:21:25,000 --> 00:21:27,000
He says, "Judge, I did wrong.
00:21:27,000 --> 00:21:31,000
I took his money. I blew it in Las Vegas.
00:21:31,000 --> 00:21:35,000
I did something that was immoral and wrong, and I'm sorry,
00:21:35,000 --> 00:21:38,000
and I wish so much that I could take it back, but I can't.
00:21:38,000 --> 00:21:42,000
And I have no money to pay him back. I just ask for mercy."
00:21:42,000 --> 00:21:47,000
Now, he's watching me. He's watching me.
00:21:47,000 --> 00:21:50,000
I'm the judge. What if this happens?
00:21:50,000 --> 00:21:54,000
What if I say, "I give you mercy,
00:21:54,000 --> 00:21:59,000
and I give you the money that he took away"?
00:21:59,000 --> 00:22:02,000
Now, both parties are made whole, you see.
00:22:02,000 --> 00:22:09,000
Now, what if we do better than that?
00:22:09,000 --> 00:22:13,000
I give him mercy. He gets money.
00:22:13,000 --> 00:22:17,000
He's been made whole. The violated is made whole.
00:22:17,000 --> 00:22:22,000
The guilty party receives mercy.
00:22:22,000 --> 00:22:25,000
But what if I could do better than that?
00:22:25,000 --> 00:22:29,000
What if I could give the guilty party innocence?
00:22:29,000 --> 00:22:34,000
What if instead of just not giving him punishment,
00:22:34,000 --> 00:22:37,000
I could provide him righteousness?
00:22:37,000 --> 00:22:40,000
Now, both parties are made whole,
00:22:40,000 --> 00:22:44,000
because if all I do is not give him punishment,
00:22:44,000 --> 00:22:47,000
he still remains a guilty person, just unpunished.
00:22:47,000 --> 00:22:51,000
He's happy because he has his money back.
00:22:51,000 --> 00:22:54,000
He's unhappy because he's still a thief, you see.
00:22:54,000 --> 00:23:01,000
But if this judge can reconcile these parties
00:23:01,000 --> 00:23:06,000
and make both whole, we righteously win.
00:23:06,000 --> 00:23:12,000
That's what the sanctuary is going to do.
00:23:12,000 --> 00:23:14,000
God is going to provide Israel mercy.
00:23:14,000 --> 00:23:19,000
Who is the offender here?
00:23:19,000 --> 00:23:23,000
Israel is the offender. The people are the offenders.
00:23:23,000 --> 00:23:26,000
We're the offenders. We're the ones that's broken God's holy law.
00:23:26,000 --> 00:23:30,000
God's going to give us mercy,
00:23:30,000 --> 00:23:33,000
but the only way he's going to give us mercy,
00:23:33,000 --> 00:23:35,000
who's the offended party? God is.
00:23:35,000 --> 00:23:38,000
You think God's going to say, "That's okay. I just don't need the money."
00:23:38,000 --> 00:23:41,000
No, no, no. It doesn't work that way.
00:23:41,000 --> 00:23:43,000
God is going to make sure that he gets paid back everything we took away.
00:23:43,000 --> 00:23:50,000
The honor we should have given him, the obedience we should have given him, right?
00:23:50,000 --> 00:23:55,000
The love we should have given him,
00:23:55,000 --> 00:23:58,000
God's going to get every bit of that back.
00:23:58,000 --> 00:24:04,000
And not only is he going to do that,
00:24:04,000 --> 00:24:06,000
not only is he going to restore the offended party himself,
00:24:06,000 --> 00:24:11,000
but he is going to be able to provide the guilty party innocence, righteousness,
00:24:11,000 --> 00:24:17,000
and make them so they're not violators of God's law anymore.
00:24:17,000 --> 00:24:19,000
That's the mercy God gives.
00:24:19,000 --> 00:24:22,000
Everything else, again, is just judicial corruption. It's a joke.
00:24:22,000 --> 00:24:28,000
So people that say, "Well, God will forgive us. It'll be okay.
00:24:28,000 --> 00:24:32,000
We'll all get to heaven. God will just forgive us."
00:24:32,000 --> 00:24:35,000
There's only one way God forgives.
00:24:35,000 --> 00:24:37,000
That's according to the pattern he's shown us.
00:24:37,000 --> 00:24:40,000
And the pattern he's shown us is called the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:24:40,000 --> 00:24:45,000
That's the only way that the Ten Commandments can be perfectly fulfilled.
00:24:45,000 --> 00:24:52,000
Notice now, the mercy seat is on top of the Ten Commandments.
00:24:52,000 --> 00:24:56,000
It's all in the same box.
00:24:56,000 --> 00:24:58,000
Mercy and obedience are in the same box.
00:24:58,000 --> 00:25:05,000
You can't have mercy without full obedience to God's law.
00:25:05,000 --> 00:25:10,000
You see?
00:25:10,000 --> 00:25:12,000
So this sanctuary is going to provide some way
00:25:12,000 --> 00:25:16,000
where the guilty can fully obey God's law
00:25:16,000 --> 00:25:21,000
and at the same time receive mercy because they haven't.
00:25:21,000 --> 00:25:24,000
Isn't that amazing?
00:25:24,000 --> 00:25:26,000
So we'll have to go through this and see how it works.
00:25:26,000 --> 00:25:31,000
Look now in verse 18,
00:25:31,000 --> 00:25:36,000
"And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work,
00:25:36,000 --> 00:25:39,000
shalt thou make them in the two ends of the mercy seat.
00:25:39,000 --> 00:25:42,000
And make one cherub on the one end,
00:25:42,000 --> 00:25:44,000
and the other cherub on the other end,
00:25:44,000 --> 00:25:46,000
even of the mercy seat shall you make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
00:25:46,000 --> 00:25:50,000
And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high,
00:25:50,000 --> 00:25:53,000
covering the mercy seat with their wings,
00:25:53,000 --> 00:25:55,000
and their faces shall look one to the other toward the mercy seat,
00:25:55,000 --> 00:25:58,000
shall the faces of the cherubims be."
00:25:58,000 --> 00:26:02,000
Wow.
00:26:02,000 --> 00:26:04,000
So here's what happened.
00:26:04,000 --> 00:26:05,000
Remember who can tell me what it--
00:26:05,000 --> 00:26:08,000
and Jonathan don't say anything.
00:26:08,000 --> 00:26:09,000
Who can tell me what a cherubim is?
00:26:09,000 --> 00:26:12,000
An angel?
00:26:12,000 --> 00:26:13,000
That's exactly right.
00:26:13,000 --> 00:26:14,000
How many kinds of angels were there?
00:26:14,000 --> 00:26:17,000
Two.
00:26:17,000 --> 00:26:18,000
What were they?
00:26:19,000 --> 00:26:20,000
Cherubim, what's the other?
00:26:20,000 --> 00:26:22,000
Seraphim is.
00:26:22,000 --> 00:26:23,000
That's it.
00:26:23,000 --> 00:26:24,000
Seraphim, man, very, man, you're hitting on all cylinders.
00:26:24,000 --> 00:26:27,000
Not two genders.
00:26:27,000 --> 00:26:29,000
They're all male.
00:26:29,000 --> 00:26:31,000
You see a female angel, it's not biblical.
00:26:31,000 --> 00:26:33,000
They're all male.
00:26:33,000 --> 00:26:34,000
But there are two different types.
00:26:34,000 --> 00:26:37,000
There's cherubim, there's seraphim.
00:26:37,000 --> 00:26:38,000
There's going to be these cherubim.
00:26:38,000 --> 00:26:39,000
Now remember, cherubim are the guardian angels,
00:26:39,000 --> 00:26:42,000
are the ones that stood and kept the way of the tree of life
00:26:42,000 --> 00:26:44,000
and wouldn't let man come back in.
00:26:44,000 --> 00:26:46,000
We're going to have one on each side here.
00:26:46,000 --> 00:26:48,000
And their wings are going to be overspreading,
00:26:48,000 --> 00:26:51,000
and they're going to be looking down at that mercy seat.
00:26:51,000 --> 00:26:54,000
And the idea is this.
00:26:54,000 --> 00:26:57,000
This concept of God's mercy, of the law not being broken,
00:26:57,000 --> 00:27:02,000
of mercy being given to the people who broke it,
00:27:02,000 --> 00:27:06,000
is such a holy, special thing.
00:27:06,000 --> 00:27:10,000
You dare not tamper with it.
00:27:10,000 --> 00:27:13,000
You dare not alter it.
00:27:13,000 --> 00:27:15,000
You dare not pollute it.
00:27:15,000 --> 00:27:17,000
And those guardian angels, they've got their wings covered.
00:27:17,000 --> 00:27:21,000
You know how a chicken will cover their little chicks?
00:27:21,000 --> 00:27:25,000
They're protecting it, and they're looking,
00:27:25,000 --> 00:27:28,000
and they're both staring down at that mercy seat
00:27:28,000 --> 00:27:31,000
as it is something most holy and most special
00:27:31,000 --> 00:27:35,000
we're going to guard with everything.
00:27:35,000 --> 00:27:37,000
Don't tamper with it.
00:27:37,000 --> 00:27:39,000
Now, look here in verse 23.
00:27:39,000 --> 00:27:43,000
So the mercy seat goes here in the most holy place.
00:27:43,000 --> 00:27:47,000
Let's look here now.
00:27:47,000 --> 00:27:49,000
Verse 23, "Thou shalt also make a table of shetim wood,
00:27:49,000 --> 00:27:53,000
two cubits shall be the length thereof,
00:27:53,000 --> 00:27:55,000
and a cubit the breadth thereof,
00:27:55,000 --> 00:27:57,000
and a cubit and a half the height thereof,
00:27:57,000 --> 00:27:59,000
and thou shalt overlay it with pure gold,
00:27:59,000 --> 00:28:01,000
and make there to a crown or a rim of gold round about,
00:28:01,000 --> 00:28:06,000
and thou shalt make unto it a border
00:28:06,000 --> 00:28:09,000
of a handbreadth round about,
00:28:09,000 --> 00:28:11,000
and thou shalt make a golden crown
00:28:11,000 --> 00:28:13,000
to the border of round about,
00:28:13,000 --> 00:28:15,000
and thou shalt make for it four rings of gold,
00:28:15,000 --> 00:28:19,000
just like the mercy seat,
00:28:19,000 --> 00:28:21,000
or just like the Ark of the Covenant, excuse me,
00:28:21,000 --> 00:28:23,000
and put the rings in the four corners
00:28:23,000 --> 00:28:25,000
that are on the four feet thereof.
00:28:25,000 --> 00:28:29,000
Over against the border shall the rings be
00:28:29,000 --> 00:28:31,000
for the places of the staves to bear the table,
00:28:31,000 --> 00:28:35,000
and thou shalt make the staves of shetim wood,
00:28:35,000 --> 00:28:37,000
and overlay them with gold,
00:28:37,000 --> 00:28:39,000
that the table may be borne or carried with them.
00:28:39,000 --> 00:28:42,000
And thou shalt make the dishes thereof,
00:28:42,000 --> 00:28:44,000
and the spoons thereof, and the covers thereof,
00:28:44,000 --> 00:28:46,000
and the bowls thereof, to cover with all,
00:28:46,000 --> 00:28:48,000
and a pure gold shalt thou make them."
00:28:48,000 --> 00:28:50,000
What's this table for?
00:28:50,000 --> 00:28:51,000
We're going to see the next verse.
00:28:51,000 --> 00:28:53,000
"And thou shalt set upon the table,
00:28:53,000 --> 00:28:55,000
showbread before me always."
00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:58,000
Man, I get tingles thinking about this, all right?
00:28:58,000 --> 00:29:01,000
Now look.
00:29:01,000 --> 00:29:05,000
Remember, watch this now.
00:29:05,000 --> 00:29:08,000
God said this has to be done according to a particular,
00:29:08,000 --> 00:29:12,000
specific pattern that God gives.
00:29:12,000 --> 00:29:18,000
And so making it according to the pattern,
00:29:18,000 --> 00:29:22,000
the tabernacle then becomes a pattern of the Savior to come.
00:29:22,000 --> 00:29:28,000
So if the Savior to come doesn't--
00:29:28,000 --> 00:29:30,000
if someone professes to be the Savior to come
00:29:30,000 --> 00:29:33,000
and they don't fit this pattern,
00:29:33,000 --> 00:29:35,000
they're not the Savior God provided.
00:29:35,000 --> 00:29:38,000
But if the person God provided fits this pattern here,
00:29:38,000 --> 00:29:42,000
we know we have the promised Savior.
00:29:42,000 --> 00:29:44,000
Now watch what happens.
00:29:44,000 --> 00:29:46,000
You're going to take a table,
00:29:46,000 --> 00:29:53,000
and you're going to put what kind of bread?
00:29:53,000 --> 00:29:57,000
Shh.
00:29:57,000 --> 00:29:59,000
Showbread.
00:29:59,000 --> 00:30:01,000
Showbread.
00:30:01,000 --> 00:30:05,000
Now his mama works with him,
00:30:05,000 --> 00:30:06,000
but he's been through the one like this for children.
00:30:06,000 --> 00:30:10,000
So a lot of folks haven't been through this before,
00:30:10,000 --> 00:30:12,000
so we don't want him to answer.
00:30:12,000 --> 00:30:14,000
He's like a steel trap.
00:30:14,000 --> 00:30:16,000
He retains all the information.
00:30:16,000 --> 00:30:18,000
Very proud of him.
00:30:18,000 --> 00:30:19,000
Showbread.
00:30:19,000 --> 00:30:21,000
How many of you all have showbread at the house?
00:30:21,000 --> 00:30:25,000
How many of you all have bread at the house?
00:30:25,000 --> 00:30:28,000
I do have.
00:30:28,000 --> 00:30:29,000
You have--can I use that as an illustration?
00:30:29,000 --> 00:30:32,000
I don't want to.
00:30:32,000 --> 00:30:35,000
I will give it back.
00:30:35,000 --> 00:30:37,000
I promise I'll give it back.
00:30:37,000 --> 00:30:39,000
All right.
00:30:39,000 --> 00:30:41,000
Folks, this is a homemade loaf of bread made by Jonathan,
00:30:41,000 --> 00:30:47,000
made in a bread machine.
00:30:47,000 --> 00:30:49,000
It's pretty neat.
00:30:49,000 --> 00:30:50,000
He brings these up here every now and then gives them to people.
00:30:50,000 --> 00:30:54,000
Now, this is bread in my hand.
00:30:54,000 --> 00:31:00,000
What's the difference between bread and showbread?
00:31:00,000 --> 00:31:05,000
It's exactly right.
00:31:05,000 --> 00:31:07,000
This is bread.
00:31:09,000 --> 00:31:11,000
This is showbread.
00:31:11,000 --> 00:31:13,000
I'm showing you my bread.
00:31:13,000 --> 00:31:15,000
All right.
00:31:15,000 --> 00:31:17,000
Yeah.
00:31:17,000 --> 00:31:19,000
I'm showing you my bread.
00:31:19,000 --> 00:31:21,000
Showbread is bread that's set out on display to be shown.
00:31:21,000 --> 00:31:26,000
And who's this bread being shown to?
00:31:26,000 --> 00:31:29,000
Who's the bread being shown to?
00:31:29,000 --> 00:31:32,000
The Lord is God.
00:31:32,000 --> 00:31:34,000
How do we know?
00:31:34,000 --> 00:31:35,000
Look back in the text.
00:31:35,000 --> 00:31:37,000
That's every time I'm always going to drive you right back to the Scriptures.
00:31:37,000 --> 00:31:40,000
Look back in verse 30.
00:31:40,000 --> 00:31:43,000
Look in verse 30.
00:31:43,000 --> 00:31:44,000
"And thou shalt set upon the table showbread before me."
00:31:44,000 --> 00:31:48,000
You're showing the bread to God.
00:31:48,000 --> 00:31:54,000
Very interesting.
00:31:54,000 --> 00:31:57,000
Now, remember,
00:31:57,000 --> 00:31:59,000
in watch how the Bible falls into place like little puzzle pieces.
00:31:59,000 --> 00:32:03,000
I told you when we first started this class months ago,
00:32:03,000 --> 00:32:07,000
it'd be like putting little puzzle pieces into place.
00:32:07,000 --> 00:32:11,000
Remember what we learned about the manna in the desert.
00:32:11,000 --> 00:32:17,000
The manna was a picture of what?
00:32:17,000 --> 00:32:22,000
Huh?
00:32:22,000 --> 00:32:24,000
That's right.
00:32:24,000 --> 00:32:26,000
The coming Savior.
00:32:26,000 --> 00:32:27,000
Remember, Jesus in John 6 said,
00:32:27,000 --> 00:32:30,000
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven to give life into the world."
00:32:30,000 --> 00:32:34,000
I'm the true manna.
00:32:34,000 --> 00:32:36,000
John chapter 6, he explains that he is the true manna.
00:32:36,000 --> 00:32:41,000
What else we learned about bread through Joseph.
00:32:41,000 --> 00:32:48,000
Joseph was a picture of whom?
00:32:48,000 --> 00:32:53,000
What he said.
00:32:53,000 --> 00:32:55,000
Say it louder.
00:32:55,000 --> 00:32:56,000
The coming Savior, Jesus.
00:32:56,000 --> 00:33:00,000
The world needed bread to live,
00:33:00,000 --> 00:33:02,000
and only Joseph had bread to give.
00:33:02,000 --> 00:33:04,000
Remember?
00:33:04,000 --> 00:33:06,000
And so all the world had to come to Egypt to get bread from Joseph.
00:33:06,000 --> 00:33:11,000
Jesus says in John chapter 6,
00:33:11,000 --> 00:33:14,000
"I am that living bread that came down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die.
00:33:14,000 --> 00:33:22,000
And the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world."
00:33:22,000 --> 00:33:28,000
Now look.
00:33:28,000 --> 00:33:36,000
If I'm hungry and I'm dying,
00:33:36,000 --> 00:33:40,000
and I eat this bread,
00:33:40,000 --> 00:33:42,000
I receive life and I live off this bread that I ate.
00:33:42,000 --> 00:33:47,000
In a spiritual sense, if Jesus is my bread of life,
00:33:47,000 --> 00:33:54,000
and he dies on the cross for my sins,
00:33:54,000 --> 00:33:58,000
if I eat that truth of what he's done for me,
00:33:58,000 --> 00:34:01,000
as I live physically from this bread,
00:34:01,000 --> 00:34:04,000
I live spiritually and eternally from that bread.
00:34:04,000 --> 00:34:07,000
Does that make sense?
00:34:07,000 --> 00:34:10,000
Now watch.
00:34:10,000 --> 00:34:13,000
We don't have time to get into all of this because this is a cursory lesson throughout the Bible.
00:34:13,000 --> 00:34:22,000
But here's the thing.
00:34:22,000 --> 00:34:27,000
The priests ate the bread that's put on the table.
00:34:27,000 --> 00:34:36,000
And every day they had to put fresh bread on the table.
00:34:36,000 --> 00:34:39,000
Every day they ate bread and they showed God the bread.
00:34:39,000 --> 00:34:44,000
God looked at the bread, they ate the bread.
00:34:44,000 --> 00:34:48,000
Why is that important?
00:34:48,000 --> 00:34:53,000
Why does God accept me?
00:34:53,000 --> 00:34:58,000
I live because I've eaten the bread.
00:34:58,000 --> 00:35:02,000
God accepts me because instead of looking at me, he looks at Jesus, the bread I've eaten.
00:35:02,000 --> 00:35:08,000
Does that make sense?
00:35:08,000 --> 00:35:10,000
Instead of seeing me in my sin, he sees him in his righteousness,
00:35:10,000 --> 00:35:14,000
his obedience to those Ten Commandments.
00:35:14,000 --> 00:35:18,000
The only way we can get credit for obeying those Ten Commandments,
00:35:18,000 --> 00:35:22,000
we the guilty party can get credit for obeying those Ten Commandments
00:35:22,000 --> 00:35:25,000
as if the promised Savior keeps them unbroken in our place.
00:35:25,000 --> 00:35:32,000
So we have bread here.
00:35:32,000 --> 00:35:37,000
We don't have time to read all of it.
00:35:37,000 --> 00:35:39,000
But over here there's going to be a candlestick.
00:35:39,000 --> 00:35:47,000
We'll put light here.
00:35:47,000 --> 00:35:49,000
On this side there's going to be a candlestick.
00:35:49,000 --> 00:35:51,000
And the candlestick, and you all can go back and read through these chapters here
00:35:51,000 --> 00:35:56,000
and learn more about it.
00:35:56,000 --> 00:35:57,000
But there's going to be candlestick, there's going to be oil for the light,
00:35:57,000 --> 00:36:00,000
and this candlestick is going to shine all the time.
00:36:00,000 --> 00:36:03,000
What's it going to shine on?
00:36:03,000 --> 00:36:07,000
You got it.
00:36:07,000 --> 00:36:09,000
It's going to shine on the bread.
00:36:09,000 --> 00:36:13,000
Shine on the bread so that people can see to eat the bread
00:36:13,000 --> 00:36:16,000
so God can see the bread and they be accepted.
00:36:16,000 --> 00:36:21,000
Every time.
00:36:21,000 --> 00:36:23,000
Do you know what I'm doing right now?
00:36:23,000 --> 00:36:25,000
By teaching you about Jesus and what he did for you on the cross?
00:36:25,000 --> 00:36:30,000
I'm shining a lot on the bread so he can be eaten.
00:36:30,000 --> 00:36:34,000
This whole tabernacle is a picture of the coming gospel.
00:36:34,000 --> 00:36:39,000
See how this works?
00:36:39,000 --> 00:36:43,000
Man, we're running out of time.
00:36:43,000 --> 00:36:45,000
So next week we're going to have the tabernacle part 2
00:36:45,000 --> 00:36:50,000
and show you some of the other components of this tabernacle.
00:36:50,000 --> 00:36:53,000
And it is vitally important that you understand how this tabernacle functions.
00:36:53,000 --> 00:36:59,000
And then when the promised Savior comes,
00:36:59,000 --> 00:37:02,000
instead of being like the Jews that rejected him,
00:37:02,000 --> 00:37:05,000
you'll be like, "Yep, there's our Savior alright."
00:37:05,000 --> 00:37:11,000
And you understand how salvation works
00:37:11,000 --> 00:37:15,000
because you understand how the pattern works that God has given us.
00:37:15,000 --> 00:37:22,000
This is a picture, but when the Savior comes,
00:37:22,000 --> 00:37:25,000
all this is done for real in one person for you.
00:37:25,000 --> 00:37:29,000
But that will go ahead and stop.
00:37:29,000 --> 00:37:31,000
