Episode Transcript
So last week, as everyone is settling down Leviticus 16, last week we left off with a concept of mercy.
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,000
And we saw that the tabernacle, remember the tabernacle is also called the sanctuary.
00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:20,000
And the whole point of the sanctuary was so that God could dwell among the people.
00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them to get the God on the mountain, the holy God on the mountain down with unholy people.
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:32,000
All right. So this is where we were. We had a sanctuary with two rooms.
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:42,000
And then this is the Ark of the Covenant or a box that had the Ten Commandments in it.
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:51,000
And on that box there was a lid. And who can remember what the lid was? It was called what? A mercy seat.
00:00:51,000 --> 00:01:06,000
And so we started talking about the concept of mercy. We've already looked at a table with bread on it.
00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:14,000
And then the candlestick, the shine light on that bread.
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:22,000
And so we talked about the concept of mercy. The only way God, a holy God, can dwell with unholy people.
00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:28,000
The only way God can accept us, because we've all broken those Ten Commandments.
00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:34,000
We've all broken His law.
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:38,000
The only way God can accept us is on the concept of mercy.
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:43,000
And so this mercy seat in this sanctuary is going to show us how God rightly gives mercy.
00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:51,000
And we looked at last week that mercy is not just saying, "Well, you're forgiven. Don't worry about it."
00:01:51,000 --> 00:02:00,000
Because remember, Chris was the offender, he was the offender. And if I just do away with his crime, then the offender is not made whole.
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:15,000
And so there has to be some way where I can make him not be a thief anymore and make him not be a victim anymore.
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:26,000
And if not, you don't have mercy, then it's cheap if you just say, "Oh, don't worry about it."
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:33,000
Which is what people think mercy is.
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:37,000
If I stole from Chris and he says, "I forgive you," well, he can forgive me up to a certain extent.
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:49,000
But true forgiveness, there has to be something made whole there, or else the offense still exists.
00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:59,000
And so until he's paid back and until I'm not a thief anymore, there really is no forgiveness.
00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:08,000
All right, so let's go ahead and look here now and look in Leviticus 16, "And the Lord spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the Lord and died."
00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:23,000
So let me give you a little explanation on that. And if we read all this, we wouldn't be able to get through the class.
00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:30,000
But here's what happens. With this sanctuary, all the people aren't going to be able to -- because God's going to be right here at the mercy seat.
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:45,000
The people still can't approach God. They're still unholy. They still can't come in there.
00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:51,000
And so something has to happen, and it has to be on the basis of this concept we learned before, which is mediation.
00:03:51,000 --> 00:04:00,000
Remember we learned about a mediator? Who was the original mediator? Between God and the children of Israel?
00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:08,000
Moses.
00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:09,000
Moses. Remember they said, "Don't let us speak to God anymore. You go speak to him. We'll listen to you."
00:04:09,000 --> 00:04:16,000
He was the go-between. Remember Moses was the go-between.
00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:21,000
So now what God is going to do, now that God is off the mountain, he's going to be inside the Most Holy Place,
00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:27,000
God is going to designate a particular man to be the official go-between in the sense of having a priestly work.
00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:40,000
And this is where we get to this priest here. The people can't come in here and go to God on their own. They're all sinners.
00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:51,000
So what God is going to do, he's going to show the people how sinful people can approach God and come into his presence.
00:04:51,000 --> 00:05:00,000
Unlike how they did on the mountain. They couldn't do it. It's going to be done through a priest.
00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:11,000
Now here's the difference between a prophet and a priest, okay?
00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:20,000
Moses was never a priest. He was a prophet. He did have some kind of priestly work in the sense of mediation, but he never was made a priest.
00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:34,000
A prophet represents God to the people. God tells the prophet something. The prophet goes and says, "Thus says the Lord."
00:05:34,000 --> 00:05:44,000
This is what the Lord says. And he represents God to the people. A priest on the other hand, he does it in reverse.
00:05:44,000 --> 00:05:52,000
He represents the people to God, okay? When we send, as a republic, our nation is a democracy, but it's based on a republican platform.
00:05:52,000 --> 00:06:07,000
So when we send people to Washington, D.C., all the people aren't going to Washington, D.C., but we send people to represent us.
00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:20,000
They're our representatives. And they go and they speak on our behalf and they vote on our behalf. We may not like how they vote, but they do exercise our representation.
00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:36,000
So a prophet represents God to the people. A priest represents the people to God.
00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:45,000
So there will be a priest who will go into the most holy place, and when the priest goes into the most holy place, it will act as the people going into the most holy place.
00:06:45,000 --> 00:07:04,000
When the priest stands before God and is accepted by God, then all the people the priest represents are going before God and being accepted by God. Does that make sense?
00:07:04,000 --> 00:07:18,000
All right. So that's a priest.
00:07:18,000 --> 00:07:23,000
Now, one man can't do all of this work for two million people. So the priest is going to have subordinate priests under him.
00:07:23,000 --> 00:07:40,000
And so you're going to have a high priest, and then you're going to have other priests beneath him.
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:56,000
OK, there's only one high priest and the high priest is the only priest who can represent the people by going and standing before God and being accepted by God.
00:07:56,000 --> 00:08:12,000
The only priest that can do that, none of the other lower priests can do that. OK, they can work for the high priest, but they cannot perform the office of the high priest.
00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:29,000
They cannot do and accomplish what the high priest does. They can only do the lower work for the high priest. Does that make sense?
00:08:29,000 --> 00:08:41,000
Now, in doing this, God is showing us incredible pictures.
00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:49,000
The high priest, when we're looking at prophecy here and illustrations in the Old Testament, based on everything we've learned so far, who is this high priest going to represent?
00:08:49,000 --> 00:09:02,000
Who is he a picture of?
00:09:02,000 --> 00:09:06,000
Jesus.
00:09:06,000 --> 00:09:07,000
He'll be a picture of the coming Savior because the coming Savior is the only one who can bring the people to God and stand before God's presence and be accepted.
00:09:07,000 --> 00:09:21,000
Does that make sense? The only one.
00:09:21,000 --> 00:09:24,000
So he represents the problem of Savior. Who do the priests under him that serve him represent?
00:09:24,000 --> 00:09:34,000
They represent us who are close relation to him because the high priest is kin to the lower priests.
00:09:34,000 --> 00:09:46,000
Now, the original high priest was a man named Aaron, and Aaron was Moses' brother.
00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:58,000
He was the original high priest.
00:09:58,000 --> 00:10:01,000
When Aaron dies, then one of his sons will be appointed by God as the next high priest.
00:10:01,000 --> 00:10:13,000
And on and on and on is how it's supposed to work.
00:10:13,000 --> 00:10:17,000
All right.
00:10:17,000 --> 00:10:19,000
So let's go ahead and look here now.
00:10:19,000 --> 00:10:21,000
Chapter 16.
00:10:21,000 --> 00:10:25,000
Verse 2, "And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times..."
00:10:25,000 --> 00:10:30,000
I'm sorry, verse 1, "And the Lord spoke unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron when they offered before the Lord and died."
00:10:30,000 --> 00:10:37,000
So here's what happened.
00:10:37,000 --> 00:10:41,000
Two of Aaron's sons decided that they were going to offer to God an offering that was not according to the way God said to offer it.
00:10:41,000 --> 00:10:58,000
They broke God's law and they thought, "Hey, we're priests. We're sons of the high priests.
00:10:58,000 --> 00:11:07,000
We'll do things different.
00:11:07,000 --> 00:11:12,000
Let's come up with something new."
00:11:12,000 --> 00:11:16,000
And they made an offering that was against, that was not the way that God said to do.
00:11:16,000 --> 00:11:24,000
Guess what God did to them?
00:11:24,000 --> 00:11:26,000
He killed them. They died.
00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:30,000
And the two sons of Aaron show us that when it comes to the gospel message, which this is a picture of,
00:11:30,000 --> 00:11:38,000
the tabernacle is a picture of the gospel message. It's a picture of salvation.
00:11:38,000 --> 00:11:43,000
When it comes to salvation, you don't tamper with it.
00:11:43,000 --> 00:11:48,000
You don't mess with it.
00:11:48,000 --> 00:11:50,000
There's only one way to be saved. That's through the high priest.
00:11:50,000 --> 00:11:54,000
And it will be exactly the picture of what we see right here.
00:11:54,000 --> 00:12:00,000
Exactly how God showed in the Old Testament is how the real high priest, when he comes, will do it in the New Testament.
00:12:00,000 --> 00:12:10,000
And so if you tamper with it, it doesn't matter if you're still the son of Aaron and you're a priest.
00:12:10,000 --> 00:12:16,000
It doesn't matter if you're still using the tabernacle.
00:12:16,000 --> 00:12:22,000
So the picture is this. Okay, so you're in church.
00:12:22,000 --> 00:12:26,000
You got something that looks like this.
00:12:26,000 --> 00:12:28,000
So you say you worship Jesus, the high priest.
00:12:28,000 --> 00:12:32,000
All right. So you say you're a child of God, son of Aaron.
00:12:32,000 --> 00:12:37,000
But you don't come to God the way he says.
00:12:37,000 --> 00:12:41,000
You do something different. You add to it.
00:12:41,000 --> 00:12:44,000
You tell people, well, you got to be dunked in water.
00:12:44,000 --> 00:12:47,000
You got to do this. You got to do that. You got to do something else.
00:12:47,000 --> 00:12:51,000
And you tamper with the way God said that we're to have mercy.
00:12:51,000 --> 00:12:58,000
You mess with it and God does not accept it.
00:12:58,000 --> 00:13:01,000
Just like he didn't accept Cain's offering. Remember?
00:13:01,000 --> 00:13:05,000
The sons of Aaron that offered this false offering were no different than Cain when he offered his false offering.
00:13:05,000 --> 00:13:12,000
And God didn't accept him. Okay?
00:13:12,000 --> 00:13:15,000
So religion can look like the real thing, just like a counterfeit dollar bill.
00:13:15,000 --> 00:13:23,000
But a counterfeit is a counterfeit is a counterfeit.
00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:27,000
If you were to go to a bank with a stack of counterfeit $100 bills,
00:13:27,000 --> 00:13:36,000
and you were to go to that teller and say, I'd like to deposit these into my account, please.
00:13:36,000 --> 00:13:44,000
Would you think the banker is wrong for not accepting your counterfeit money?
00:13:44,000 --> 00:13:49,000
No. It looks like real money.
00:13:49,000 --> 00:13:54,000
It's got the United States of America. It says $100. It's close.
00:13:54,000 --> 00:14:00,000
Why do we want to be so nitpicky for?
00:14:00,000 --> 00:14:04,000
See how silly that sounds?
00:14:04,000 --> 00:14:07,000
But it's the same way when it comes to religion.
00:14:07,000 --> 00:14:09,000
Do you know what the thing about a counterfeit $100 bill is? It's not true.
00:14:09,000 --> 00:14:15,000
It's a lie. It's not real.
00:14:15,000 --> 00:14:19,000
So the government's not going to accept it. Why?
00:14:19,000 --> 00:14:22,000
It wasn't issued by the government.
00:14:22,000 --> 00:14:25,000
The gospel was issued by God.
00:14:25,000 --> 00:14:28,000
And if you counterfeit the gospel, God's not going to accept it because it's a lie.
00:14:28,000 --> 00:14:35,000
It's not real, even though it may appear to be very similar to the real thing.
00:14:35,000 --> 00:14:42,000
Okay? So with that understood, let's go ahead and look here now.
00:14:42,000 --> 00:14:49,000
Verse 2, "And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother,
00:14:49,000 --> 00:14:52,000
that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil."
00:14:52,000 --> 00:14:56,000
That's the veil right there. The veil was a curtain, a dividing curtain.
00:14:56,000 --> 00:15:01,000
So he says, "You tell him, you can't just come in here just any time, Aaron.
00:15:01,000 --> 00:15:07,000
Not just any time." So let's go ahead and look here now.
00:15:07,000 --> 00:15:11,000
"Before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark, that he die not,
00:15:11,000 --> 00:15:16,000
for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat."
00:15:16,000 --> 00:15:23,000
That's right, Michelle. She says, "The gospel most we're preaching today is not from God."
00:15:23,000 --> 00:15:28,000
That's exactly right. And so he says, "You make sure and tell Aaron,
00:15:28,000 --> 00:15:32,000
Aaron, you can't just walk in here any time you want to.
00:15:32,000 --> 00:15:36,000
There's got to be a certain way you come.
00:15:36,000 --> 00:15:41,000
And you can only come one time.
00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:47,000
You can only come one way, and it's the way I say." Okay?
00:15:47,000 --> 00:15:54,000
So this is very important, because if he were to go in any other time, just walk in there,
00:15:54,000 --> 00:15:59,000
Aaron's going to die too. Why? Because Aaron is a sinner,
00:15:59,000 --> 00:16:05,000
just like the rest of the people of Israel.
00:16:05,000 --> 00:16:09,000
He just can't. Walt's right in before God. He's a sinner. All right?
00:16:09,000 --> 00:16:14,000
So let's go ahead and look here now and see what's got to happen for Aaron
00:16:14,000 --> 00:16:18,000
to get into the most holy place before God,
00:16:18,000 --> 00:16:21,000
so that the people can get into the most holy place before God.
00:16:21,000 --> 00:16:25,000
All right? So they can be accepted.
00:16:25,000 --> 00:16:28,000
Look here now in verse 3. "Thus," or this is how,
00:16:28,000 --> 00:16:32,000
"Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place, with a young bullet for a sin offering
00:16:32,000 --> 00:16:37,000
and a ram for a burn offering." All right?
00:16:37,000 --> 00:16:40,000
Since Aaron is a sinner, he has to have an offering made for his sin
00:16:40,000 --> 00:16:47,000
to put his sin away before he can ever come in here and represent the people. Why?
00:16:47,000 --> 00:16:55,000
Because the coming Savior, who is the true High Priest, he will have no sin at all.
00:16:55,000 --> 00:17:03,000
So Aaron can't just walk right in and say, "Well, I'm a picture of the coming Savior."
00:17:03,000 --> 00:17:07,000
He just will walk right in here, because Aaron is a sinner himself.
00:17:07,000 --> 00:17:14,000
The true High Priest, when he comes, he won't be like Aaron.
00:17:14,000 --> 00:17:18,000
He won't be like Aaron in the sense that he will never die like Aaron,
00:17:18,000 --> 00:17:24,000
so there will be no sons to replace him.
00:17:24,000 --> 00:17:27,000
But when the true High Priest comes, he will never need a replacement.
00:17:27,000 --> 00:17:31,000
He will represent the people forever.
00:17:31,000 --> 00:17:34,000
That's why the people live, how long? Forever.
00:17:34,000 --> 00:17:38,000
They shall not perish but have everlasting life,
00:17:38,000 --> 00:17:41,000
because they will have an everlasting High Priest who never dies.
00:17:41,000 --> 00:17:46,000
So the true High Priest, the true coming Savior, will have no sin,
00:17:46,000 --> 00:17:52,000
but Aaron does, so he's a picture of the coming Savior,
00:17:52,000 --> 00:17:57,000
but we still have to deal with the sin.
00:17:57,000 --> 00:17:59,000
So he's going to have to issue an offering here,
00:17:59,000 --> 00:18:03,000
a bowl for a sin offering, a ram for a burn offering.
00:18:03,000 --> 00:18:07,000
Verse 4, "He shall put on the holy linen coat,
00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:11,000
and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh,
00:18:11,000 --> 00:18:14,000
and shall be girded with a linen girdle,
00:18:14,000 --> 00:18:17,000
and with a linen miter shall he be attired.
00:18:17,000 --> 00:18:21,000
These are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh with water.
00:18:21,000 --> 00:18:26,000
Then so put them on."
00:18:26,000 --> 00:18:28,000
Now, I know this is very detailed here, but the Gospel is very precise.
00:18:28,000 --> 00:18:34,000
So here's what's happening.
00:18:34,000 --> 00:18:36,000
Not only does he have to have offerings to put away a sin before he ever comes into here,
00:18:36,000 --> 00:18:44,000
but he also has to wear special clothes,
00:18:44,000 --> 00:18:48,000
and the special clothes is going to represent wonderful things
00:18:48,000 --> 00:18:54,000
about the special Savior to come.
00:18:54,000 --> 00:18:57,000
The special clothes are going to have stones on them,
00:18:57,000 --> 00:19:01,000
on the heart and on the shoulders.
00:19:01,000 --> 00:19:04,000
It's going to have things that represent the people that he represents.
00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:08,000
So as he walks in with these on him,
00:19:08,000 --> 00:19:12,000
these stones and colors that he's wearing,
00:19:12,000 --> 00:19:17,000
and clothes he's wearing, and the hat that he's wearing,
00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:20,000
it represents the people coming in,
00:19:20,000 --> 00:19:23,000
and all the wonderful things he's done.
00:19:23,000 --> 00:19:25,000
His clothing will match the main colors of the rainbow
00:19:25,000 --> 00:19:30,000
that represent God's promise to never destroy the world again.
00:19:30,000 --> 00:19:35,000
So in the same way, when he comes in with these rainbow clothes,
00:19:35,000 --> 00:19:41,000
he comes in, it's like God's covenant coming in saying,
00:19:41,000 --> 00:19:45,000
"Hey, based on the offering I just made, the people won't be destroyed."
00:19:45,000 --> 00:19:52,000
All right?
00:19:52,000 --> 00:19:53,000
And so it's just a wonderful representation coming in here.
00:19:53,000 --> 00:19:57,000
He's got special clothes that represent special truths.
00:19:57,000 --> 00:20:01,000
He's got to wash his flesh with water,
00:20:01,000 --> 00:20:04,000
which means he's got to bathe and wash himself with water.
00:20:04,000 --> 00:20:08,000
This is where baptism began, okay?
00:20:08,000 --> 00:20:12,000
The washings here are baptisms.
00:20:12,000 --> 00:20:15,000
So as he's washing, he's washing the filth of his flesh off of him,
00:20:15,000 --> 00:20:21,000
which represents someone clean.
00:20:21,000 --> 00:20:23,000
It's all symbols. It's all symbolic.
00:20:23,000 --> 00:20:27,000
And so this is the first picture of baptism that we see here is in the priesthood, okay?
00:20:27,000 --> 00:20:36,000
Now, let's go ahead and look.
00:20:36,000 --> 00:20:40,000
Verse 5, "And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel
00:20:40,000 --> 00:20:47,000
two kids of the goats for a sin offering,
00:20:47,000 --> 00:20:51,000
and one ram for a burnt offering."
00:20:51,000 --> 00:20:54,000
So two goats, one ram.
00:20:54,000 --> 00:20:59,000
"And Aaron," verse 6, "shall offer his bullock,"
00:20:59,000 --> 00:21:02,000
that is the offering for himself of the sin offering,
00:21:02,000 --> 00:21:05,000
"which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself and for his house."
00:21:05,000 --> 00:21:10,000
Now we get back to the word "atonement" again.
00:21:10,000 --> 00:21:13,000
Who can remember what the word "atonement" means?
00:21:13,000 --> 00:21:16,000
It means to what?
00:21:16,000 --> 00:21:20,000
No.
00:21:20,000 --> 00:21:23,000
Basically, like, absolve yourself?
00:21:23,000 --> 00:21:26,000
No.
00:21:26,000 --> 00:21:28,000
Remember?
00:21:28,000 --> 00:21:30,000
Huh?
00:21:30,000 --> 00:21:32,000
No. That's covenant.
00:21:32,000 --> 00:21:35,000
When we first learned about the word "atonement,"
00:21:35,000 --> 00:21:40,000
we learned about "atonement" mainly in two places.
00:21:40,000 --> 00:21:45,000
The first time we learned about "atonement" was when God covered Adam and Eve
00:21:45,000 --> 00:21:51,000
with the skins of those animals.
00:21:51,000 --> 00:21:53,000
The word "atonement" means to cover, okay?
00:21:53,000 --> 00:21:58,000
So when God covered them in the skins of those animals,
00:21:58,000 --> 00:22:02,000
there was an atonement being made.
00:22:02,000 --> 00:22:05,000
The second time we learned about "atonement" was with Noah's ark,
00:22:05,000 --> 00:22:10,000
because God told him to put "pitch," that is tar, to waterproof that ark all over the ark.
00:22:10,000 --> 00:22:17,000
And that word, Hebrew word for "pitch" or "tar," literally is "atonement."
00:22:17,000 --> 00:22:25,000
The word "atonement" here in Leviticus, where it says,
00:22:25,000 --> 00:22:31,000
"and make an atonement for himself," that is the exact same Hebrew word used for the pitch
00:22:31,000 --> 00:22:37,000
when they put "pitch" on the ark.
00:22:37,000 --> 00:22:40,000
All right?
00:22:40,000 --> 00:22:42,000
So he's going to make a covering for himself.
00:22:42,000 --> 00:22:45,000
So when he offers the--if you'll look here--
00:22:45,000 --> 00:22:50,000
"and Aaron shall offer his bullet of the sin offering,
00:22:50,000 --> 00:22:54,000
which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself and for his house."
00:22:54,000 --> 00:22:58,000
So when he offers this sin offering, the sin offering becomes an atonement.
00:22:58,000 --> 00:23:05,000
Again, go back to Adam and Eve.
00:23:05,000 --> 00:23:11,000
When God killed the innocent substitutes in the guilty party's place,
00:23:11,000 --> 00:23:15,000
he clothed them in the innocence of the substitutes that died for them.
00:23:15,000 --> 00:23:20,000
So Aaron is killing an innocent substitute in his place,
00:23:20,000 --> 00:23:26,000
just like God killed an innocent substitute in Adam and Eve's place.
00:23:26,000 --> 00:23:29,000
When he kills it and makes this offering to God,
00:23:29,000 --> 00:23:33,000
then that in God's eyes will be a covering.
00:23:33,000 --> 00:23:38,000
When he looks at Aaron, he will not see Aaron's sins.
00:23:38,000 --> 00:23:42,000
He will see the innocence of the bullock that died in his place.
00:23:42,000 --> 00:23:46,000
Make sense? It's a covering.
00:23:46,000 --> 00:23:50,000
Someone said "wash away" or something like that earlier.
00:23:50,000 --> 00:23:54,000
That is a different thing. That's forgiveness, not atonement.
00:23:54,000 --> 00:24:01,000
Atonement covers, forgiveness puts away.
00:24:01,000 --> 00:24:05,000
We'll look at that here in just a moment with the day of atonement.
00:24:05,000 --> 00:24:11,000
It does both, cover and put away. We'll see that here in just a moment.
00:24:11,000 --> 00:24:15,000
I know we're getting complicated here, but we're at this stage in the class
00:24:15,000 --> 00:24:19,000
where we're now putting pieces together and making a bigger picture.
00:24:19,000 --> 00:24:23,000
We're getting a little deeper here, actually quite a bit deeper.
00:24:23,000 --> 00:24:27,000
Let's look here now. That's right, Michelle.
00:24:27,000 --> 00:24:32,000
That's the atonement covers, forgiveness puts away.
00:24:32,000 --> 00:24:35,000
Verse 6, "And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering,
00:24:35,000 --> 00:24:39,000
which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself and for his house.
00:24:39,000 --> 00:24:43,000
And he shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord
00:24:43,000 --> 00:24:50,000
at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation."
00:24:50,000 --> 00:24:56,000
So now we've got these two goats.
00:24:56,000 --> 00:24:59,000
"Aaron has now offered a sacrifice for himself.
00:24:59,000 --> 00:25:02,000
Now that he's got that done, his sin is atoned.
00:25:02,000 --> 00:25:06,000
Now he can represent the coming Savior and make an atonement
00:25:06,000 --> 00:25:11,000
for the people he represents."
00:25:11,000 --> 00:25:13,000
This is fun. Watch how this works.
00:25:13,000 --> 00:25:17,000
Now he's picturing the coming Savior Jesus.
00:25:17,000 --> 00:25:21,000
Verse 7, "He takes these two goats,
00:25:21,000 --> 00:25:26,000
he presents them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle."
00:25:26,000 --> 00:25:31,000
He presents them before the Lord. He stands out here.
00:25:31,000 --> 00:25:34,000
He presents them before God. God, here are these two goats.
00:25:34,000 --> 00:25:39,000
This is the tabernacle of the congregation.
00:25:39,000 --> 00:25:43,000
In other words, this is the people's house, the people's tabernacle here.
00:25:43,000 --> 00:25:49,000
And he offers them before the Lord.
00:25:49,000 --> 00:25:52,000
Verse 8, "And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats,
00:25:52,000 --> 00:25:56,000
one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat."
00:25:56,000 --> 00:26:00,000
Y'all heard of scapegoats before? That's where this came from.
00:26:00,000 --> 00:26:04,000
When you hear of a scapegoat, people use it.
00:26:04,000 --> 00:26:06,000
They don't realize it comes from Leviticus 16.
00:26:06,000 --> 00:26:10,000
So when he says he casts lots, we're going to put it in modern terminology.
00:26:10,000 --> 00:26:14,000
He flips a coin.
00:26:14,000 --> 00:26:16,000
One of these animals is going to die.
00:26:16,000 --> 00:26:19,000
The other animal is going to be taken away alive.
00:26:19,000 --> 00:26:24,000
All right?
00:26:24,000 --> 00:26:27,000
So he flips a coin. Which one's going to be which?
00:26:27,000 --> 00:26:31,000
Verse 8, "And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats,
00:26:31,000 --> 00:26:34,000
one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat.
00:26:34,000 --> 00:26:38,000
And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell
00:26:38,000 --> 00:26:44,000
and offer him for a sin offering."
00:26:44,000 --> 00:26:47,000
The scapegoat goes away. All right?
00:26:47,000 --> 00:26:51,000
The Lord's goat dies.
00:26:51,000 --> 00:26:54,000
It gets presented to the Lord.
00:26:54,000 --> 00:26:56,000
The other one gets taken away from the Lord.
00:26:56,000 --> 00:26:59,000
You getting that?
00:26:59,000 --> 00:27:01,000
One is given to the Lord. The other is taken away from the Lord.
00:27:01,000 --> 00:27:06,000
The scapegoat's taken away from the Lord.
00:27:06,000 --> 00:27:10,000
It's going to make sense here in just a minute.
00:27:10,000 --> 00:27:14,000
Verse 9, "And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell
00:27:14,000 --> 00:27:20,000
and offer him for a sin offering."
00:27:20,000 --> 00:27:22,000
Now here's what happens.
00:27:22,000 --> 00:27:24,000
Outside here, there is an altar.
00:27:24,000 --> 00:27:29,000
Altar is made out of brass.
00:27:29,000 --> 00:27:33,000
Inside here, there is another altar. It's overlaid with gold.
00:27:33,000 --> 00:27:40,000
Sin offerings, there's horns on this altar too.
00:27:40,000 --> 00:27:46,000
Horns represent power.
00:27:46,000 --> 00:27:51,000
It's funny. You read through here, it's funny.
00:27:51,000 --> 00:27:54,000
It says you're going to put horns on the altar.
00:27:54,000 --> 00:27:57,000
Why would you have horns on an altar?
00:27:57,000 --> 00:28:00,000
Because Paul said, "I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
00:28:00,000 --> 00:28:05,000
for it is the power of God unto salvation."
00:28:05,000 --> 00:28:09,000
See how that works?
00:28:09,000 --> 00:28:11,000
It's so precisely pictured here.
00:28:11,000 --> 00:28:14,000
You have horns on this altar.
00:28:14,000 --> 00:28:18,000
The Lord's goat, you have two goats.
00:28:18,000 --> 00:28:24,000
Now do you remember the dream that Pharaoh had?
00:28:24,000 --> 00:28:31,000
You'd have these fat cows, I think it was seven fat cows,
00:28:31,000 --> 00:28:35,000
you'd have these fat cows and then these other lean cows would come and eat them up.
00:28:35,000 --> 00:28:39,000
Then you'd have fat corn and the lean corn would come and eat the fat corn up.
00:28:39,000 --> 00:28:44,000
Do you remember that?
00:28:44,000 --> 00:28:45,000
When Joseph interpreted the dream, he told Pharaoh, "It's just one dream."
00:28:45,000 --> 00:28:50,000
Pharaoh thought it was two dreams.
00:28:50,000 --> 00:28:52,000
He said, "No, it's just one dream. It's the same thing.
00:28:52,000 --> 00:28:55,000
Whether it's cows or whether it's corn, it's all the same meaning.
00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:59,000
You have seven good years that's going to be eaten up by seven bad years of famine."
00:28:59,000 --> 00:29:04,000
The same thing here.
00:29:04,000 --> 00:29:06,000
The two goats are one offering. It's not two offerings.
00:29:06,000 --> 00:29:11,000
It's two goats representing two wonderful truths of the one offering
00:29:11,000 --> 00:29:19,000
that the true high priest will accomplish when he comes.
00:29:19,000 --> 00:29:22,000
Make sense?
00:29:22,000 --> 00:29:25,000
Here you have an altar of gold and they offer sweet incense on this.
00:29:25,000 --> 00:29:33,000
When they burn the incense, the sweet incense goes to God.
00:29:33,000 --> 00:29:40,000
Any of y'all into essential oils?
00:29:40,000 --> 00:29:45,000
Man, my wife burns this stuff. She puts this in this little diffuser or whatever.
00:29:45,000 --> 00:29:49,000
I was laying in bed the other night and it smelled so good in my room.
00:29:49,000 --> 00:29:54,000
It smelled so good.
00:29:54,000 --> 00:29:56,000
That was the idea here with the incense.
00:29:56,000 --> 00:30:01,000
It was always offered on the gold.
00:30:01,000 --> 00:30:05,000
It represented the acceptable prayers being made to God.
00:30:05,000 --> 00:30:14,000
The high priest intercedes for his people.
00:30:14,000 --> 00:30:20,000
Make sense?
00:30:20,000 --> 00:30:22,000
In fact, when you go into the New Testament,
00:30:22,000 --> 00:30:25,000
you will actually hear the high priest praying for his people.
00:30:25,000 --> 00:30:29,000
That is the true prayers going up.
00:30:29,000 --> 00:30:33,000
Then when the people pray in the high priest's name, their prayers are accepted.
00:30:33,000 --> 00:30:39,000
So what we have here is prayers accepted on the basis of the work of the high priest.
00:30:39,000 --> 00:30:46,000
That is why we pray.
00:30:46,000 --> 00:30:49,000
How do we pray?
00:30:49,000 --> 00:30:51,000
In Jesus' name, amen.
00:30:51,000 --> 00:30:53,000
When we say in Jesus' name, amen, we are saying we are offering this prayer to you, God,
00:30:53,000 --> 00:30:58,000
so it will be acceptable to you.
00:30:58,000 --> 00:31:00,000
We are sinners, but we are offering this to you in the name of the high priest
00:31:00,000 --> 00:31:05,000
who made this all sacrifice for us.
00:31:05,000 --> 00:31:08,000
Make sense?
00:31:08,000 --> 00:31:11,000
So gold is never about sin.
00:31:11,000 --> 00:31:15,000
A gold altar is about the sin being gone in righteous people able to pray to God.
00:31:15,000 --> 00:31:23,000
Now on the basis of what happened here on the brass altar.
00:31:23,000 --> 00:31:27,000
The brass altar is about God's judgment.
00:31:27,000 --> 00:31:32,000
That God's judgment comes down and an innocent substitute dies in the guilty party's place.
00:31:32,000 --> 00:31:37,000
So we have one goat here.
00:31:37,000 --> 00:31:40,000
That goat is going to die.
00:31:40,000 --> 00:31:43,000
It is an innocent goat.
00:31:43,000 --> 00:31:46,000
And the sins of the people will be put on this goat.
00:31:46,000 --> 00:31:51,000
And the goat will die in the people's place.
00:31:51,000 --> 00:31:54,000
Okay?
00:31:54,000 --> 00:31:57,000
Let's look at this now.
00:31:57,000 --> 00:32:03,000
Verse 9, "And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell and offer him for a sin offering,
00:32:03,000 --> 00:32:08,000
but the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord
00:32:08,000 --> 00:32:14,000
to make an atonement with him and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness."
00:32:14,000 --> 00:32:23,000
What is this all about?
00:32:23,000 --> 00:32:25,000
Both of these animals are presented to God.
00:32:25,000 --> 00:32:27,000
One is presented to God in the door of the tabernacle.
00:32:27,000 --> 00:32:30,000
That's where the brazen altar is.
00:32:30,000 --> 00:32:34,000
How is he presented to God?
00:32:34,000 --> 00:32:36,000
As a sacrifice.
00:32:36,000 --> 00:32:38,000
Dead.
00:32:38,000 --> 00:32:40,000
Look, the people's sins have been put on this goat.
00:32:40,000 --> 00:32:43,000
What Aaron would do, Aaron would put his hands on the head of that goat.
00:32:43,000 --> 00:32:47,000
He would then confess, "All the people of Israel, we have all broken your commandments, God.
00:32:47,000 --> 00:32:53,000
We are all sinners."
00:32:53,000 --> 00:32:56,000
And once he put those sins on that goat,
00:32:56,000 --> 00:33:01,000
now the goat is bearing the sins of the people.
00:33:01,000 --> 00:33:05,000
Now the goat dies, sheds its blood in the people's place.
00:33:05,000 --> 00:33:11,000
The other goat is presented to God alive.
00:33:11,000 --> 00:33:14,000
And then God, when you read, God would say,
00:33:14,000 --> 00:33:18,000
"You take a strong man who can carry this goat a long way,
00:33:18,000 --> 00:33:23,000
and you take him out of town where he'll never see a man again.
00:33:23,000 --> 00:33:30,000
You take him far, far out of town where the people and the goat will never see each other again."
00:33:30,000 --> 00:33:41,000
That is forgiveness.
00:33:41,000 --> 00:33:44,000
The word forgiveness means to put away.
00:33:44,000 --> 00:33:49,000
Now, how does this work?
00:33:49,000 --> 00:33:52,000
Because God said there would be an atonement made by this scapegoat.
00:33:52,000 --> 00:33:56,000
Here's how it works.
00:33:56,000 --> 00:33:59,000
Have y'all ever heard of the old saying,
00:33:59,000 --> 00:34:04,000
"Like if someone does something wrong and they don't deal with it?"
00:34:04,000 --> 00:34:08,000
They'll say, "We'll just sweep that under the rug."
00:34:08,000 --> 00:34:12,000
Have y'all ever heard that before?
00:34:12,000 --> 00:34:14,000
Now, there was a man I know that used to work for the state police where I retired from.
00:34:14,000 --> 00:34:28,000
And as the story goes, he went to a party one time,
00:34:28,000 --> 00:34:34,000
and as he was backing out, which he probably had too much to drink,
00:34:34,000 --> 00:34:39,000
as he was backing out to leave the party, he ran into another co-worker's vehicle.
00:34:39,000 --> 00:34:47,000
He hit it and he drove off.
00:34:47,000 --> 00:34:50,000
And so I was told that someone went into the management's office at the headquarters a little later on
00:34:50,000 --> 00:35:03,000
and said, "Hey, what did y'all do about this man running into those people's car?
00:35:03,000 --> 00:35:10,000
I know the man's name, but he's not going to mention it.
00:35:10,000 --> 00:35:12,000
What would y'all do about this man running into the co-worker's car?"
00:35:12,000 --> 00:35:16,000
And his response was, "Come on in the office and I'll show you the rug we swept it under."
00:35:16,000 --> 00:35:22,000
That was his response.
00:35:22,000 --> 00:35:24,000
Now, if an atonement is simply this, if I am a sinner and you cover me with the innocence of someone that died for me
00:35:24,000 --> 00:35:42,000
and I'm covered in that innocence, but if you were to pull that cover back, you're still going to see my guilt.
00:35:42,000 --> 00:35:50,000
It just sweeps the guilt under the rug.
00:35:50,000 --> 00:35:55,000
Oh, it covers it all right.
00:35:55,000 --> 00:35:58,000
I look innocent on the outside, but I'm still sinful on the inside.
00:35:58,000 --> 00:36:04,000
When God atones, he does not sweep our sin under the rug.
00:36:04,000 --> 00:36:11,000
He puts it away.
00:36:11,000 --> 00:36:14,000
So here's what happens.
00:36:14,000 --> 00:36:15,000
This is why on the day of atonement,
00:36:15,000 --> 00:36:18,000
this one day of the year is the day when Aaron can go into the most holy place.
00:36:18,000 --> 00:36:24,000
The one day of the year, remember God said,
00:36:24,000 --> 00:36:26,000
"You tell Aaron he can't come just any time into the most holy place.
00:36:26,000 --> 00:36:30,000
He can only come one day out of the year."
00:36:30,000 --> 00:36:33,000
That is the day of atonement.
00:36:33,000 --> 00:36:35,000
I believe on the calendar in the Jewish language is Yom Kippur.
00:36:35,000 --> 00:36:40,000
So when you see that on the calendar, I hope I'm not wrong.
00:36:40,000 --> 00:36:44,000
Someone will be commenting on there, tell me.
00:36:44,000 --> 00:36:46,000
But it's the day of atonement.
00:36:46,000 --> 00:36:49,000
And only on that day could Aaron go in here and represent the people coming to God.
00:36:49,000 --> 00:36:55,000
And the only way he could do it is if he had no sins first,
00:36:55,000 --> 00:36:58,000
his sins had to be put away.
00:36:58,000 --> 00:37:00,000
And then as a sinless high priest, he takes one goat, kills it.
00:37:00,000 --> 00:37:06,000
What does that do?
00:37:06,000 --> 00:37:07,000
It satisfies the punishment of the guilty party.
00:37:07,000 --> 00:37:14,000
All right.
00:37:14,000 --> 00:37:15,000
What does a live goat do?
00:37:15,000 --> 00:37:19,000
It shows, because when that man takes that goat away,
00:37:19,000 --> 00:37:23,000
and God said it has to be so far away that the goat and the people
00:37:23,000 --> 00:37:27,000
will never come into contact again.
00:37:27,000 --> 00:37:30,000
When that goat gets taken away, do you know what that's,
00:37:30,000 --> 00:37:33,000
what is that a picture of?
00:37:33,000 --> 00:37:34,000
Just think, what is that a picture of?
00:37:34,000 --> 00:37:37,000
It's a picture of our sin, what?
00:37:37,000 --> 00:37:40,000
How far away?
00:37:40,000 --> 00:37:44,000
That's it.
00:37:44,000 --> 00:37:45,000
So far away, we never come into contact with that sin again.
00:37:45,000 --> 00:37:50,000
So far away that the sin is forever removed from the people
00:37:50,000 --> 00:37:55,000
for whom the animal died.
00:37:55,000 --> 00:37:59,000
Isn't that good?
00:37:59,000 --> 00:38:01,000
Oh, by the way, Yom Kippur was it.
00:38:01,000 --> 00:38:04,000
Day of atonement.
00:38:04,000 --> 00:38:05,000
Good.
00:38:05,000 --> 00:38:06,000
All right.
00:38:06,000 --> 00:38:07,000
So don't get any nasty comments in.
00:38:07,000 --> 00:38:08,000
That's great.
00:38:08,000 --> 00:38:09,000
Thank you.
00:38:09,000 --> 00:38:10,000
Thank you for looking that up.
00:38:10,000 --> 00:38:11,000
So when you see Yom Kippur on the calendar, that is the day when
00:38:11,000 --> 00:38:16,000
the high priest represented the people to God.
00:38:16,000 --> 00:38:21,000
Two goats, one goat dies for the people, sheds its blood.
00:38:21,000 --> 00:38:27,000
Here's what Aaron would do.
00:38:27,000 --> 00:38:28,000
God would have Aaron take the blood of that animal that died
00:38:28,000 --> 00:38:32,000
in the people's place, come in here, come in around the veil
00:38:32,000 --> 00:38:39,000
that blocked the people away.
00:38:39,000 --> 00:38:41,000
The veil says, you can't come here.
00:38:41,000 --> 00:38:42,000
You're a sinner.
00:38:42,000 --> 00:38:43,000
Oh, but I got this blood.
00:38:43,000 --> 00:38:47,000
This blood, there is a sacrifice that had been made.
00:38:47,000 --> 00:38:51,000
And now here's the high priest with the names of all the tribes
00:38:51,000 --> 00:38:55,000
of Israel on his uniform.
00:38:55,000 --> 00:38:58,000
And he comes in and the veil is there to say, you sinful people
00:38:58,000 --> 00:39:03,000
can't come in here.
00:39:03,000 --> 00:39:05,000
You can't come up this mountain to where God is.
00:39:05,000 --> 00:39:09,000
And the high priest says, I come as a sinless representative
00:39:09,000 --> 00:39:15,000
of the people for whom I died.
00:39:15,000 --> 00:39:21,000
He takes that blood.
00:39:21,000 --> 00:39:23,000
You know what God told him to do with that blood?
00:39:23,000 --> 00:39:26,000
The blood goes right here on the mercy seat.
00:39:26,000 --> 00:39:30,000
It gets sprinkled right there on the mercy seat.
00:39:30,000 --> 00:39:33,000
So on the basis of the sack of the innocent party that died
00:39:33,000 --> 00:39:41,000
for the people, God gives them mercy.
00:39:41,000 --> 00:39:45,000
And their sin is forever put away, not swept under the rug
00:39:45,000 --> 00:39:53,000
because the sin was dealt with.
00:39:53,000 --> 00:39:56,000
Punishment was made.
00:39:56,000 --> 00:39:59,000
The sin was put away.
00:39:59,000 --> 00:40:02,000
And now sinless, innocent, righteous people enter before God
00:40:02,000 --> 00:40:08,000
and are given mercy through the substitute that died for them.
00:40:08,000 --> 00:40:14,000
That's the only way guilty, sinful people can stand before
00:40:14,000 --> 00:40:20,000
a holy and a righteous God.
00:40:20,000 --> 00:40:23,000
Here's the difference between Aaron and the coming high priest.
00:40:23,000 --> 00:40:29,000
Aaron will die.
00:40:29,000 --> 00:40:31,000
The promised Savior will not.
00:40:31,000 --> 00:40:33,000
Aaron will have a replacement.
00:40:33,000 --> 00:40:35,000
The promised Savior will forever be the high priest.
00:40:35,000 --> 00:40:39,000
Aaron offered a substitute to die for him.
00:40:39,000 --> 00:40:45,000
The high priest will have no substitute.
00:40:45,000 --> 00:40:47,000
He will have to die himself.
00:40:47,000 --> 00:40:49,000
He is the substitute.
00:40:49,000 --> 00:40:53,000
He is the substitute.
00:40:53,000 --> 00:40:55,000
Very well said, Chris.
00:40:55,000 --> 00:40:57,000
He is the substitute.
00:40:57,000 --> 00:40:58,000
I said this way.
00:40:58,000 --> 00:41:00,000
In the gospel, there was no substitute for the substitute.
00:41:00,000 --> 00:41:06,000
All right, with that said, I know we went through a lot of tiny little details,
00:41:06,000 --> 00:41:13,000
but man, when you get those details down, you start realizing
00:41:13,000 --> 00:41:16,000
this is indeed a powerful gospel.
00:41:16,000 --> 00:41:20,000
All right, with that, we'll go ahead and stop.
00:41:20,000 --> 00:41:22,000
Lord willing, we'll see you next door.
00:41:22,000 --> 00:41:25,000
