Episode Transcript
Alright, so last week we left off with Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist.
00:00 --> 00:07
And we learned what baptism was about, what it means.
00:07 --> 00:12
And I said when you think of the word "baptize" you should think of the word what?
00:12 --> 00:17
Wash.
00:17 --> 00:18
That's right.
00:19 --> 00:20
Baptism is a washing that did washings back in the Old Testament.
00:20 --> 00:24
They had the labor of brass and they were diverse washings, diverse baptisms.
00:24 --> 00:29
And the problem was the people, John the Baptist could only wash people clean on the outside with water.
00:29 --> 00:38
But he said there'd be one coming after him who would wash or baptize with the Holy Spirit
00:38 --> 00:44
because the place we really need to be washed clean is on the inside, right? Not the outside.
00:44 --> 00:50
We washed clean of our sins.
00:50 --> 00:51
Hello to whoever just tuned in this morning.
00:51 --> 00:53
Good to have you with us.
00:53 --> 00:55
We're in Mark chapter 1 and we're just beginning so you're not late.
00:55 --> 01:00
Just turn to Mark chapter 1.
01:00 --> 01:02
So I told you last week that when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist,
01:02 --> 01:09
John the Baptist was saying, "Why am I washing you? You need to be washing me."
01:09 --> 01:14
And Jesus said, "Just do it."
01:14 --> 01:18
So John the Baptist washed Jesus off in the Jordan River.
01:18 --> 01:22
And when Jesus came up out of the Jordan River, God the Father said,
01:22 --> 01:27
"This is my beloved son in whom I'm well pleased."
01:27 --> 01:30
In other words, he doesn't need any cleaning.
01:30 --> 01:32
And so it was a testimony.
01:32 --> 01:34
Hello, Keaton's. Good to have you all tuned in this morning.
01:34 --> 01:39
And so it was a testimony to everybody that Jesus was someone who doesn't need to be cleaned.
01:39 --> 01:46
He is the one that's going to make us clean.
01:46 --> 01:49
And so now we're going to see, I told you this last week that this morning
01:49 --> 01:54
we would see how Jesus makes us clean.
01:54 --> 01:57
How he, through the Holy Spirit, is going to baptize or wash people's sins away.
01:57 --> 02:05
And so here's how it's going to happen.
02:05 --> 02:07
If you'll look here in Mark chapter 1, verse 11,
02:07 --> 02:13
it says, "This is after Jesus was baptized,
02:13 --> 02:16
and there came a voice from heaven, saying,
02:16 --> 02:19
'Thou art my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.'"
02:19 --> 02:22
Now look at the next verse.
02:22 --> 02:24
"And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness."
02:24 --> 02:31
Now remember, this is the one that John said was going to baptize or wash
02:31 --> 02:36
in a way that he couldn't wash.
02:36 --> 02:38
He's going to wash on the inside.
02:38 --> 02:40
Jesus is going to wash us by the Spirit.
02:40 --> 02:46
And as soon as Jesus is washed on the outside by John,
02:46 --> 02:51
the Spirit, by whom he is going to wash people clean on the inside,
02:51 --> 02:58
immediately does what?
02:58 --> 03:01
Drive Jesus into the wilderness.
03:01 --> 03:05
You'd think, "Wow."
03:05 --> 03:08
Why would the Spirit be driving him into the wilderness?
03:08 --> 03:11
You would think if he's coming to wash people clean by the Spirit,
03:11 --> 03:15
that the Holy Spirit would be driving him into the cities,
03:15 --> 03:18
into the crowds, into the places where sinners were
03:18 --> 03:22
so he could wash them clean, but that's not what the Holy Spirit did.
03:22 --> 03:25
Immediately the Holy Spirit drove him into the wilderness.
03:25 --> 03:28
If you'll look now in verse 13,
03:28 --> 03:30
"And he that is Jesus was there in the wilderness," how many days?
03:30 --> 03:34
Forty days.
03:34 --> 03:35
Now remember, the number 40 speaks of what in the Bible?
03:35 --> 03:40
Holiness.
03:40 --> 03:41
Holiness?
03:41 --> 03:42
Whole.
03:42 --> 03:43
Whole?
03:43 --> 03:44
It does.
03:44 --> 03:45
Really, that's more than number 7.
03:45 --> 03:48
So when you're looking at 40, what does 40...
03:48 --> 03:51
Yes, sir?
03:51 --> 03:52
A perfect trial.
03:52 --> 03:53
That's right, a perfect trial.
03:54 --> 03:56
So 40 speaks of a perfect trial.
03:56 --> 03:59
Forty days and nights with the ark, remember?
03:59 --> 04:03
And now 40 days in the wilderness.
04:03 --> 04:07
And remember, increments of 40, 400 years of captivity in Egypt,
04:07 --> 04:16
400 years under rules of judges, 400 years rules of kings,
04:16 --> 04:25
400 silent years between Malachi and Christ.
04:25 --> 04:30
It's all increments of 40, speaking of perfect trials, perfect testings.
04:30 --> 04:38
And so now Jesus immediately is being driven into the wilderness
04:38 --> 04:43
so he can be perfectly tested, perfectly tempted.
04:43 --> 04:51
So it says here in verse 13, "And he was there in the wilderness, 40 days,
04:51 --> 04:56
tempted of Satan, and was with the wild beasts and the angels ministered unto him."
04:56 --> 05:01
Now if you'll turn to the Gospel of Matthew, please,
05:01 --> 05:05
Matthew goes into greater detail explaining that 40-day trial.
05:05 --> 05:14
Matthew chapter 4...
05:14 --> 05:26
If anyone's hot, let me know and I'll go turn the AC on.
05:26 --> 05:31
Everyone okay?
05:31 --> 05:32
All right.
05:32 --> 05:33
Actually, I wouldn't do it.
05:33 --> 05:35
I'd have the thermal queen do it back there.
05:35 --> 05:38
All right.
05:38 --> 05:39
So Matthew chapter 4, and let's zoom in now on this 40-day testing
05:39 --> 05:47
that Jesus is going to have.
05:47 --> 05:50
It says in verse 1, Matthew 4, 1,
05:50 --> 05:52
"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness,"
05:52 --> 05:57
why?
05:57 --> 05:58
"to be tempted of the devil."
05:58 --> 06:00
Why would the Holy Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness
06:00 --> 06:04
to be tempted of the devil when Jesus didn't come
06:04 --> 06:08
to go into the wilderness?
06:08 --> 06:09
He came to wash people's sins away by the Holy Ghost.
06:09 --> 06:14
Why would the Holy Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness
06:14 --> 06:16
to be tempted by the devil?
06:16 --> 06:17
Because this 40-day temptation is the means by which our sins
06:17 --> 06:24
could be washed away by the Holy Spirit.
06:24 --> 06:26
So this is why the Holy Spirit sends him into the wilderness
06:26 --> 06:29
to be tempted by the devil.
06:29 --> 06:30
And we'll look at that here in just a moment.
06:30 --> 06:32
If you'll look now in verse 2,
06:32 --> 06:34
"And when he that is Jesus had fasted forty days and forty nights,
06:34 --> 06:38
he was afterward and hungered."
06:38 --> 06:41
So Jesus is now gone without food in the wilderness
06:41 --> 06:45
for forty days and forty nights.
06:45 --> 06:47
That's a long time to go without food.
06:47 --> 06:51
I did good for twelve hours.
06:51 --> 06:53
Me too.
06:53 --> 06:54
I didn't really mean to go to the devil or Satan's devil
06:54 --> 06:57
after forty days.
06:57 --> 06:59
That's the way it appears here.
06:59 --> 07:01
But, you know, we don't know.
07:01 --> 07:03
But by going what it says here, that's what it shows.
07:03 --> 07:06
And so for forty days and forty nights, he's gone without food.
07:06 --> 07:10
He fasted.
07:10 --> 07:12
And the reason they fasted,
07:12 --> 07:15
and the reason people fast today,
07:15 --> 07:17
of course there's health benefits to it,
07:17 --> 07:19
but forty days and forty nights is definitely not for health benefits.
07:19 --> 07:22
But the reason they fasted back then,
07:22 --> 07:25
they would set aside a particular time
07:25 --> 07:28
when they would just give themselves to prayer
07:28 --> 07:31
into seeking God's face.
07:31 --> 07:33
And so they would set food away.
07:33 --> 07:35
In this particular instance, God the Father,
07:35 --> 07:39
the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness,
07:39 --> 07:41
and the Holy Spirit led him to not eat, but to just pray.
07:41 --> 07:45
And so Jesus, being the perfect man,
07:45 --> 07:49
is going to perfectly obey whatever God tells him to do.
07:49 --> 07:54
And God told him, "Don't eat."
07:54 --> 07:58
Right? You're just going to fast and pray.
07:58 --> 08:01
So he's in the wilderness for forty days, fasting and praying.
08:01 --> 08:05
And now he's very, very hungry.
08:05 --> 08:08
And now this is when the devil is going to come to him,
08:08 --> 08:12
and tempt him in one of the aspects of his manhood.
08:12 --> 08:16
Now we learned, when we learned about the creation of man,
08:16 --> 08:19
we learned that God is a trinity.
08:19 --> 08:23
He's three persons that make up one God.
08:23 --> 08:27
Man is a trichotomy.
08:27 --> 08:29
We are three parts that make up one person.
08:29 --> 08:32
What are those three parts? Anyone remember?
08:32 --> 08:37
What?
08:37 --> 08:40
The Holy Spirit?
08:40 --> 08:42
No, we're not the Holy Spirit.
08:42 --> 08:44
We're three parts that make up one person. Yes, sir?
08:44 --> 08:47
Body, soul, and spirit.
08:47 --> 08:49
Body, soul, and spirit. That's a trichotomy.
08:49 --> 08:52
I have a body.
08:52 --> 08:54
I have an inner man that's my soul.
08:54 --> 08:56
I have a spirit which allows me to be able to communicate with God.
08:56 --> 09:01
God is spirit.
09:01 --> 09:02
They that worship him must worship him in spirit.
09:02 --> 09:05
That's the frequency that we communicate with God and know God.
09:05 --> 09:09
And so Jesus first is going to be tempted here to eat.
09:09 --> 09:14
When Jesus is tempted to eat, what part of his manhood will he be tempted in?
09:14 --> 09:18
His body.
09:18 --> 09:20
He's going to be tempted in all parts of his manhood.
09:20 --> 09:26
Or as the Bible puts it in another place,
09:26 --> 09:29
he would be tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin.
09:29 --> 09:34
So let's look here now.
09:34 --> 09:36
It says in verse 2,
09:36 --> 09:39
"And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
09:39 --> 09:42
he was afterward and hungered.
09:42 --> 09:44
And when the tempter came to him, he said,
09:44 --> 09:46
'The Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.'"
09:46 --> 09:50
In other words, if you're the Son of God, just turn these stones into bread.
09:50 --> 09:54
Well now who does Jesus need to be listening to?
09:54 --> 09:56
The Holy Spirit or the unholy spirit?
09:56 --> 09:59
Yeah, does he need to be listening to God?
09:59 --> 10:01
Or do he need to be listening to the devil?
10:01 --> 10:03
I mean, the whole reason we got in trouble the first time is because
10:03 --> 10:06
somebody listened to the devil instead of listening to God.
10:06 --> 10:09
That was Adam.
10:09 --> 10:11
And so what we see is this.
10:11 --> 10:13
How did man get into the position of being a sinner to begin with?
10:13 --> 10:20
It was through Adam following the devil's temptation.
10:20 --> 10:27
Alright?
10:27 --> 10:29
So here's what's happening.
10:29 --> 10:31
The reason the Holy Spirit is driving Jesus into the wilderness
10:31 --> 10:34
to be tempted by the devil.
10:34 --> 10:36
Have you ever thought in your mind,
10:36 --> 10:38
if only Adam wouldn't have sinned in the Garden of Eden,
10:38 --> 10:42
we wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now.
10:42 --> 10:44
Has anyone thought like that before?
10:44 --> 10:46
All of us have.
10:46 --> 10:48
This is what's taking place.
10:48 --> 10:50
God is causing what happened in the Garden of Eden to be completely undone.
10:50 --> 10:57
Here's what's happening.
10:57 --> 10:59
The first time we had Adam representing all mankind
10:59 --> 11:10
being tempted by the devil in a garden.
11:10 --> 11:17
And now what's happening in the New Testament is
11:17 --> 11:20
it's going to be Adam versus the devil round two.
11:20 --> 11:26
But this time Adam would be going into the ring with a substitute fighter.
11:26 --> 11:32
This time instead of Adam being tempted by the devil in the garden,
11:32 --> 11:37
it would be Jesus being tempted by the devil in a desert.
11:37 --> 11:43
See what's happening?
11:43 --> 11:46
This is why the whole problem, the whole reason we fell into sin to begin with
11:46 --> 11:52
was because of what happened with Adam representing humanity in the garden.
11:52 --> 11:58
He failed to follow God and he brought us all into sin.
11:58 --> 12:04
And so God says, "I will send Jesus."
12:04 --> 12:11
Jesus is going to be the second Adam.
12:11 --> 12:21
The Bible calls Jesus the last Adam.
12:21 --> 12:24
He calls the Adam in the garden the first Adam.
12:24 --> 12:28
He calls the Adam in the desert the last Adam.
12:28 --> 12:30
That's what the Bible calls Jesus.
12:30 --> 12:33
So the first Adam gets tempted by the devil in the garden.
12:33 --> 12:40
The last Adam or the second Adam gets tempted by the devil in a desert.
12:40 --> 12:46
Interestingly, how did sin enter into the world?
12:46 --> 12:52
It entered into the world by Adam eating something he wasn't supposed to.
12:52 --> 12:59
Now God told Adam, "All the trees of the garden you may freely eat."
12:59 --> 13:09
Except for this one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
13:09 --> 13:13
So when Adam was tempted to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
13:13 --> 13:20
he was tempted to eat something on the full belly.
13:20 --> 13:26
Jesus is not being tempted in a garden where he's surrounded by food.
13:26 --> 13:31
He's being tempted in the desert when he hasn't eaten for 40 days.
13:31 --> 13:37
Adam was tempted to eat something when he had a full belly.
13:37 --> 13:41
Jesus is tempted to eat something when he hasn't eaten in over a month.
13:41 --> 13:46
Which temptation is the hardest?
13:46 --> 13:49
The second Adam, right?
13:49 --> 13:53
If the second Adam's temptation is harder than the first Adam, then watch what happens.
13:53 --> 14:01
If his disobedience was on the full belly and his obedience is on an empty belly,
14:01 --> 14:13
then he has a greater obedience than Adam's disobedience.
14:13 --> 14:22
You see what's happening?
14:22 --> 14:25
So the obedience is going to undo and outdo the disobedience.
14:25 --> 14:33
So God's grace is going to be greater than Adam's sin.
14:33 --> 14:39
Does that make sense?
14:39 --> 14:40
So now, here he is tempted to eat.
14:40 --> 14:44
Let's see what Jesus does when he's tempted to eat when the Father tells him no,
14:44 --> 14:49
as compared to Adam.
14:49 --> 14:51
Look here now in verse 4.
14:51 --> 14:54
"But he that is Jesus answered and said it is written."
14:54 --> 14:57
Now Jesus is going to quote scripture.
14:57 --> 15:00
Now that's what Adam should have done when the devil tempted,
15:00 --> 15:03
or where Eve came to, that's what Eve should have done when the devil tempted her.
15:03 --> 15:07
That's what Adam should have done when Eve brought the devil's temptation to him.
15:07 --> 15:11
He should have said, "Now God said," right?
15:11 --> 15:15
But he didn't do it.
15:15 --> 15:16
He went by what the devil said, what the wife said, not what God said.
15:16 --> 15:20
"It is written, 'Jesus said, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"
15:20 --> 15:23
Now he's quoting from the Old Testament,
15:23 --> 15:25
"by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"
15:25 --> 15:29
In other words, we didn't do what God says.
15:29 --> 15:31
It's better for me to obey God and not eat than to eat and disobey God.
15:31 --> 15:37
So Jesus did the second Adam did what the first Adam didn't do.
15:37 --> 15:45
Watch this now.
15:45 --> 15:46
Jesus did the second Adam did what the first Adam didn't do.
15:46 --> 15:51
And by doing what the first Adam didn't do,
15:51 --> 15:55
he would undo what the first Adam did.
15:55 --> 15:58
That make sense?
15:58 --> 16:00
He's undoing it.
16:00 --> 16:03
By undoing the sin that we were born in,
16:03 --> 16:09
we could be born again and have the sin washed away.
16:09 --> 16:15
So by the Spirit, he washes us, baptizes us on the inside.
16:15 --> 16:20
This is why the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness.
16:20 --> 16:22
So by doing what the first Adam didn't do,
16:22 --> 16:24
he would undo what the first Adam did.
16:24 --> 16:27
Now watch.
16:27 --> 16:30
Verse 5, Matthew 4, 5.
16:30 --> 16:33
"Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city,
16:33 --> 16:37
and seteth him on a pinnacle of the temple."
16:37 --> 16:41
We're getting all holy now, aren't we?
16:41 --> 16:45
"The pinnacle of a temple now,
16:45 --> 16:48
and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God,
16:48 --> 16:50
cast thyself down, for it is written,
16:50 --> 16:54
He shall give his angels charge concerning thee,
16:54 --> 16:57
and in their hands they shall bear thee uplest,
16:57 --> 16:59
and any time thou dash thy foot against his tongue."
16:59 --> 17:01
Now watch what's happening.
17:01 --> 17:03
The devil takes Jesus to church, takes him to the temple.
17:03 --> 17:07
The devil then quotes scripture to Jesus.
17:07 --> 17:12
The only problem is he took scripture out of context.
17:12 --> 17:15
He twisted it around.
17:15 --> 17:18
And so now the first time Jesus is tempted in his body,
17:18 --> 17:23
to eat when you don't suppose to,
17:23 --> 17:25
now the devil takes Jesus to church,
17:25 --> 17:27
starts quoting scripture to him.
17:27 --> 17:29
Now what part of Jesus is being tempted?
17:29 --> 17:31
His spirit.
17:31 --> 17:32
His spirit, very good.
17:32 --> 17:34
Now he's tempted in his spirit.
17:34 --> 17:38
All parts of his manhood,
17:38 --> 17:41
tempted in all points, like as we are.
17:41 --> 17:44
All parts of his manhood.
17:44 --> 17:46
And so let's look and see what Jesus does.
17:46 --> 17:48
Verse 7, "And Jesus saith unto him,
17:48 --> 17:50
It is written again."
17:50 --> 17:52
If you quoted scripture to me,
17:52 --> 17:53
well let me quote scripture to you.
17:53 --> 17:55
"Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
17:55 --> 17:58
And what you're trying to do is get me to tempt the Lord your God.
17:58 --> 18:01
You're twisting scripture around,
18:01 --> 18:03
and I am not going to jump off the temple and tempt God,
18:03 --> 18:07
and say, "You better catch me because the Bible says."
18:07 --> 18:11
Well if that's the case,
18:11 --> 18:13
God would just sit back there and watch us fall.
18:13 --> 18:17
And say, "Oh you know better than that."
18:17 --> 18:20
So now Jesus resisted the devil's temptation in his body,
18:20 --> 18:27
and now in his spirit.
18:27 --> 18:30
Adam, was Adam tempted spiritually?
18:30 --> 18:34
Yes.
18:34 --> 18:36
Remember what Adam said?
18:36 --> 18:38
"Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
18:38 --> 18:41
So Adam fell all the way around.
18:41 --> 18:44
Jesus is succeeding all the way around.
18:44 --> 18:46
Let's see what happens next.
18:46 --> 18:48
Verse 8, Matthew 4, 8.
18:48 --> 18:50
"Again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain,
18:50 --> 18:54
and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world,
18:54 --> 18:57
and the glory of them.
18:57 --> 18:59
And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee,
18:59 --> 19:02
if thou will fall down and worship me."
19:02 --> 19:05
Just look at all these kingdoms.
19:05 --> 19:08
Wouldn't you love to rule all these kingdoms?
19:08 --> 19:12
Wouldn't you love to not just be the carpenter's son,
19:12 --> 19:16
but rule the entire world?
19:16 --> 19:19
Hey, the world's following me.
19:19 --> 19:23
I'll put you in charge of these kingdoms.
19:23 --> 19:26
And now Jesus is being tempted in his soul.
19:26 --> 19:30
That "Ahh!" kind of like a lot did when he looked at the plains of Sodom.
19:30 --> 19:34
"Oh that looks nice. I'd like to have that for my cows."
19:34 --> 19:39
Now watch what Jesus does.
19:39 --> 19:42
He says in verse 9,
19:42 --> 19:48
"Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee in Satan,
19:48 --> 19:52
or get out of here Satan. For it is written,
19:52 --> 19:54
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
19:54 --> 19:58
So in all parts of his manhood,
19:58 --> 20:01
Jesus obeyed God perfectly.
20:01 --> 20:07
Verse 11, "Then the devil leaiveth him,
20:07 --> 20:09
and behold angels came and ministered unto him."
20:09 --> 20:12
So look what's happening here.
20:12 --> 20:14
By doing what the first Adam didn't do,
20:14 --> 20:16
he's undoing what the first Adam did.
20:16 --> 20:19
If you'll take your Bibles and turn to the book of Romans, please,
20:19 --> 20:22
the book of Romans, if you're in Mark, just turn to your right,
20:22 --> 20:26
go past Matthew, go past Mark, Luke, and John, and go past Acts.
20:26 --> 20:32
Once you pass Acts, stop at the book of Romans, chapter 5.
20:32 --> 20:38
And we're going to see why Jesus was tempted and how this works.
20:38 --> 20:46
Romans, chapter 5.
20:46 --> 20:50
Now I'm going to go ahead and erase this while you all are turning there
20:50 --> 20:57
so I can do another illustration.
20:57 --> 21:06
Romans, chapter 5. Look with me if you would in verse 12.
21:06 --> 21:11
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world..."
21:11 --> 21:16
Now who's that one man by which sin entered?
21:16 --> 21:19
That is the first Adam, right?
21:19 --> 21:29
"...by one man sin entered into the world..."
21:29 --> 21:36
And how does that go?
21:36 --> 21:38
"...sin entered into the world and death by sin..."
21:38 --> 21:41
So Adam brought sin into the world, and then sin brought death.
21:41 --> 21:50
That's why we all die. We're all sinners, so we all die.
21:50 --> 21:55
So let's go ahead and look back here now, Romans 5, verse 12.
21:55 --> 22:02
"...wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin..."
22:02 --> 22:06
"...and so death passed upon all men..."
22:06 --> 22:08
That's us. "...for that all have sinned."
22:08 --> 22:11
"...for until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law."
22:11 --> 22:16
"Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned..."
22:16 --> 22:22
"...and the similitude of Adam's transgression."
22:22 --> 22:25
We read that, and by doing so we need to see that we're talking about that man Adam in the garden.
22:25 --> 22:30
He's the one that transgressed.
22:30 --> 22:33
Now look here what it says.
22:33 --> 22:34
"...after the similitude of Adam's transgression..."
22:34 --> 22:37
Watch this now.
22:37 --> 22:38
"...who is the figure of him that was to come..."
22:38 --> 22:43
You're seeing that?
22:43 --> 22:45
"...Adam sitting in the garden was a figure of the man who would come and not sin in the wilderness."
22:45 --> 22:55
Ah!
22:55 --> 22:56
So we got the first man, Adam, he brought sin, he brought death,
22:56 --> 22:59
but Adam was a figure of another man who would come in the future.
22:59 --> 23:05
That would be the second Adam, the Lord Jesus.
23:05 --> 23:12
Now let's look at the difference between the two.
23:12 --> 23:16
"Adam brought sin, sin brought death."
23:16 --> 23:19
He was the figure of a second Adam who would come.
23:19 --> 23:21
Let's look at this now.
23:21 --> 23:23
"Who was the figure of him that was to come..."
23:23 --> 23:26
Look now in verse 15.
23:26 --> 23:28
"But not as the offense..."
23:28 --> 23:29
Here's the offense here.
23:29 --> 23:30
The offense was sin, right?
23:30 --> 23:33
"...not as the offense..."
23:33 --> 23:36
Go back here again to verse 15.
23:36 --> 23:39
"So also is the free gift..."
23:39 --> 23:42
Okay, so the first Adam brought an offense.
23:42 --> 23:44
The second Adam is going to bring a gift.
23:44 --> 23:49
The gift is going to be free, free gift.
23:49 --> 23:53
Watch this now.
23:53 --> 23:58
"Not as..."
23:58 --> 24:00
Verse 15.
24:00 --> 24:01
"But not as the offense, so also is the free gift.
24:01 --> 24:03
For if through the offense of one..."
24:03 --> 24:06
That's Adam.
24:06 --> 24:07
"...many be dead..."
24:07 --> 24:08
Yes.
24:08 --> 24:09
"...much more the grace of God in the gift by grace..."
24:09 --> 24:13
Which is by one man, look up here now.
24:13 --> 24:15
"...Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many."
24:15 --> 24:20
So Adam was the figure of the second Adam, Jesus.
24:20 --> 24:25
The first Adam brought an offense.
24:25 --> 24:28
The second Adam brings a free gift.
24:28 --> 24:31
And the free gift is different than the offense.
24:31 --> 24:34
Nobody wants the gift of death.
24:34 --> 24:36
So let's see what gift we're getting here through the second Adam.
24:36 --> 24:41
So he says in verse 16.
24:41 --> 24:44
"...and not as it was by one that sinned..."
24:44 --> 24:47
That's Adam, "so is the gift.
24:47 --> 24:49
"...for the judgment was by one to condemnation.
24:49 --> 24:53
But the free gift is of many offenses unto justification."
24:53 --> 24:57
Let's pause right there just a moment.
24:57 --> 25:00
"God's judgment of the offense brings condemnation."
25:00 --> 25:04
Death.
25:04 --> 25:07
"But the free gift that Jesus brings does not bring condemnation, it brings..."
25:07 --> 25:15
What?
25:15 --> 25:18
"Justification."
25:18 --> 25:23
Now here's the difference between justification and condemnation.
25:23 --> 25:29
Justification, condemnation says, "You're guilty, you're condemned, you die."
25:29 --> 25:36
Justification says, "You're not guilty, you're not condemned, you live."
25:36 --> 25:42
So the first Adam brings an offense that brings death, condemnation.
25:42 --> 25:46
The second Adam brings a free gift that brings life, justification.
25:46 --> 25:52
In other words, God looks at this Adam, this Adam disobeyed.
25:52 --> 25:56
I'm sorry, this Adam disobeyed.
25:56 --> 25:58
This Adam disobeyed.
25:58 --> 26:00
All right.
26:00 --> 26:01
The second Adam comes, we just read about him obeying.
26:01 --> 26:04
And so now his obedience becomes a gift.
26:04 --> 26:10
Now what do you do with a gift?
26:10 --> 26:12
You give it away.
26:12 --> 26:14
This morning I bought flowers for my mother-in-law, I bought flowers for my wife,
26:14 --> 26:19
I bought flowers for my mother.
26:19 --> 26:22
Those were gifts.
26:22 --> 26:24
What did I do with them?
26:24 --> 26:25
I gave them away.
26:25 --> 26:27
And so Jesus is going to come with a gift that he can give away,
26:27 --> 26:30
and that gift is justification.
26:30 --> 26:32
Watch this now.
26:32 --> 26:35
Verse 17, "For if by one man's offense death reign by one, much more they which receive,"
26:35 --> 26:42
receive what?
26:42 --> 26:43
"The gift, abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness,
26:43 --> 26:48
shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ."
26:48 --> 26:52
So sin is unrighteous, means you didn't do what was right.
26:52 --> 26:57
Obedience is righteousness.
26:57 --> 27:03
Jesus obeyed, he did what was right in the desert.
27:03 --> 27:06
Adam did what was wrong in the garden.
27:06 --> 27:10
We were born into this sin and death, but we can receive righteousness in life as a gift.
27:10 --> 27:21
See the difference?
27:21 --> 27:22
Now watch.
27:22 --> 27:25
Look now if you would in verse 18, "Therefore, as by the offense of one,
27:25 --> 27:32
judgment came upon all men to condemnation, even so by the righteousness of one,
27:32 --> 27:36
the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life."
27:36 --> 27:40
Under how many men?
27:40 --> 27:41
Some men?
27:41 --> 27:42
Most men?
27:42 --> 27:43
All men.
27:43 --> 27:45
That means every one of us in here is eligible to receive the gift.
27:45 --> 27:50
Now when I bought flowers this morning, I bought them for mamas.
27:50 --> 27:55
So as much as I love Brother Jim, had I come out of brookers with those flowers
27:55 --> 28:01
and he said, "Why thank you, brother."
28:01 --> 28:04
I was so, "No, these are not for you.
28:04 --> 28:07
These are for your wife and my wife and my mom."
28:07 --> 28:10
But it's not so with Jesus' obedience and righteousness.
28:10 --> 28:16
He gives that gift to all men. It's available to everyone that wants it.
28:16 --> 28:20
All right? Now watch.
28:20 --> 28:23
Verse 19, "For as by one man's disobedience," that's Adam,
28:23 --> 28:27
"many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."
28:27 --> 28:38
Adam's disobedience brought death, sin, condemnation.
28:38 --> 28:44
Jesus' obedience in the wilderness brought justification and life,
28:44 --> 28:53
that reign in life by one it says, and it's given to us as a free gift.
28:53 --> 28:59
Nothing to work for, nothing to ask for, just something to receive.
28:59 --> 29:09
Now here's the thing.
29:09 --> 29:11
You have the first Adam, you have the second Adam.
29:11 --> 29:16
How did we get into the first Adam?
29:16 --> 29:21
How did we get into the first Adam?
29:21 --> 29:27
Well, how did Adam end up representing you?
29:27 --> 29:34
He was created, but how did he end up representing you?
29:34 --> 29:41
How are we of Adam?
29:41 --> 29:47
Through birth.
29:47 --> 29:49
His offspring, that's it.
29:49 --> 29:52
So we were in Adam, okay?
29:52 --> 29:56
It is in his lineage, in his situation, in his condemnation, in his sin, through birth.
29:56 --> 30:06
So every one of us are born with Adam representing us.
30:06 --> 30:12
We're born sinners, and his disobedience was passed down to us,
30:12 --> 30:18
and that's how come?
30:18 --> 30:20
You don't have to, I mean, I've had five children,
30:20 --> 30:24
I've raised up five children, and there's some things you never have to teach a child.
30:24 --> 30:29
You never have to teach a child how to be selfish.
30:29 --> 30:33
You never have to teach a child how to lie.
30:33 --> 30:37
You never have to teach a child how to die.
30:37 --> 30:41
They come natural to us.
30:41 --> 30:43
All that comes natural.
30:43 --> 30:45
Why?
30:45 --> 30:46
Because we were born in Adam, we inherited his sin,
30:46 --> 30:50
we're all sinners, and we all die.
30:50 --> 30:53
We have to teach our children not to do wrong,
30:53 --> 30:57
but we can't teach them how not to die.
30:57 --> 31:01
And so every one of us are born like this.
31:01 --> 31:03
That's the first Adam.
31:03 --> 31:06
So as we were born in the first Adam,
31:06 --> 31:11
we can be born again in the second Adam.
31:11 --> 31:16
That's why Jesus said to Nicodemus in John chapter 3,
31:16 --> 31:20
"Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
31:20 --> 31:26
So as we were born the first time, our first birth, we were born in Adam.
31:26 --> 31:31
So we can be born the second time, our new birth, born again, in the second Adam.
31:31 --> 31:38
You say, "Well, okay, how do we get born the first time?"
31:38 --> 31:44
Well, how much work did we put into our first birth?
31:44 --> 31:49
None.
31:49 --> 31:50
How much work did we put into our second birth?
31:50 --> 31:53
None.
31:53 --> 31:55
Our first birth came upon us without our choice.
31:55 --> 32:00
The second birth is a free gift.
32:00 --> 32:05
I could have taken those flowers out this morning.
32:05 --> 32:08
They're paid for.
32:08 --> 32:09
I bought those flowers.
32:09 --> 32:11
I could have taken them out to my mother-in-law this morning.
32:11 --> 32:14
I could have said, "Here, mother-in-law, here's you some roses."
32:14 --> 32:18
She could have said, "I don't want those roses.
32:18 --> 32:19
They stink."
32:19 --> 32:21
Now, she didn't do that, but she could have.
32:21 --> 32:26
I could have said, "Well, here, Tammy.
32:26 --> 32:29
Have your mother's day.
32:29 --> 32:30
Here, here's some flowers."
32:30 --> 32:32
Oh, I'm allergic to roses.
32:32 --> 32:34
I don't want roses either.
32:34 --> 32:36
I could have taken the other bouquet and I could have brought it to my mom
32:36 --> 32:40
and I could have said, "Here, mom, here's some roses."
32:40 --> 32:42
My mom would take mud pies from me.
32:42 --> 32:44
She loves me.
32:44 --> 32:46
And she would receive them.
32:46 --> 32:47
You see, in every situation, the gift was paid for,
32:47 --> 32:51
but it wasn't always received.
32:51 --> 32:53
Right?
32:53 --> 32:55
And so it's the same way with Christ.
32:55 --> 32:58
Jesus went into the wilderness for you, for me, as we just read.
32:58 --> 33:05
He went into the wilderness for all men.
33:05 --> 33:08
He died for all men.
33:08 --> 33:11
He lived a perfect life for all men,
33:11 --> 33:13
so that we could get credit for how He obeyed God.
33:13 --> 33:18
Let me ask you this.
33:18 --> 33:22
Suppose that God was up here right now,
33:22 --> 33:28
and let's say that this was a courtroom.
33:28 --> 33:31
And let's say that this podium was the judge's bench.
33:31 --> 33:36
And let's say that Jess is about to be called up to be judged by God.
33:36 --> 33:46
Okay?
33:46 --> 33:47
Jess is about to be called up to be judged by God.
33:47 --> 33:53
And here, I don't want to get away from the camera.
33:53 --> 34:00
Brother Jess, I want you to take this.
34:00 --> 34:03
I'm going to give this to you.
34:03 --> 34:05
I want to give that to you.
34:05 --> 34:08
That book that I just handed Jess, that is the book of Jess's life.
34:08 --> 34:14
You open up the first page, it has his birth, born in whatever year,
34:14 --> 34:18
19, 20, something.
34:18 --> 34:20
I'm kidding, Jess.
34:20 --> 34:22
Born in whatever year.
34:22 --> 34:24
And then from that point forward,
34:24 --> 34:26
every page has everything that Jess ever did,
34:26 --> 34:30
everything Jess ever said,
34:30 --> 34:33
everything Jess ever thought in his mind his entire life.
34:33 --> 34:36
Would you want everyone reading that book?
34:36 --> 34:38
Me either.
34:38 --> 34:40
But let's say in a minute,
34:40 --> 34:42
the judge is going to call you up,
34:42 --> 34:45
and he is going to take his book of his law.
34:45 --> 34:52
And he's going to take the book of your life.
34:52 --> 34:58
He is going to take these two books side by side,
34:58 --> 35:03
and he is going to judge you to see if you lived up to his law.
35:03 --> 35:10
Now, if he judged you according to how you lived,
35:10 --> 35:15
he's going to find you in sin,
35:15 --> 35:17
commit an offense, worthy of death, and you'll be condemned,
35:17 --> 35:21
because you're in the first Adam.
35:21 --> 35:25
But let's say that before he called you up
35:25 --> 35:30
to judge you according to the book of your life,
35:30 --> 35:32
let's say that the judge,
35:32 --> 35:38
let's say that the judge offers you a free gift.
35:38 --> 35:43
And the judge says,
35:43 --> 35:45
" Jess, I have an offer for you.
35:45 --> 35:49
I'm going to make you an offer.
35:49 --> 35:51
I've got a gift for you.
35:51 --> 35:53
So choose.
35:53 --> 35:56
You can take the book of your life,
35:56 --> 36:00
and you can toss it in the court shredder.
36:00 --> 36:05
And when you come up to be judged,
36:05 --> 36:09
you can bring the book of Jesus' life instead.
36:09 --> 36:12
And instead of me judging you according to how you lived and died,
36:12 --> 36:16
I'll judge you according to how Jesus lived and died."
36:16 --> 36:19
Would you take him up on that offer?
36:19 --> 36:21
That's the free gift that the Bible's talking about right there.
36:21 --> 36:25
That's the free gift.
36:25 --> 36:28
That's why the Bible says the wages of sin is death,
36:28 --> 36:32
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord,
36:32 --> 36:36
the one who lived that perfect life for us,
36:36 --> 36:38
who was tempted like we are by the devil, and he never sinned.
36:38 --> 36:41
And so he did this.
36:41 --> 36:42
Here's the gospel.
36:42 --> 36:43
The gospel is God has made a way
36:43 --> 36:46
where you and I can be judged by him on the merit of another person.
36:46 --> 36:50
Isn't that beautiful?
36:50 --> 36:52
And so the gift is this.
36:52 --> 36:54
Yes, I recognize I was born here,
36:54 --> 36:59
and I recognize this is wrong.
36:59 --> 37:01
That's called repentance.
37:01 --> 37:03
Repentance is where you recognize,
37:03 --> 37:05
"I'm not standing up there and being judged by my life.
37:05 --> 37:08
I've done wrong."
37:08 --> 37:11
Faith is, "But I'll accept the gift of the one who lived and died for me."
37:11 --> 37:17
See the difference?
37:17 --> 37:19
And so by faith, I realize,
37:19 --> 37:22
"Man, I'm not going to be judged by how I lived,
37:22 --> 37:26
but I accept the gift that God's offering me,
37:26 --> 37:30
and my choice, like my mother-in-law when she received those roses
37:30 --> 37:34
this morning that I paid for,
37:34 --> 37:36
my choice is to receive what Jesus did for me when he came,
37:36 --> 37:41
when he was tempted, when he obeyed God in my place,
37:41 --> 37:45
and he obeyed God all the way up to the cross,
37:45 --> 37:47
and on the cross he died to pay the penalty for the sins I committed.
37:47 --> 37:52
And so basically, the new birth is,
37:52 --> 37:55
you decide, "I've got this representation.
37:55 --> 38:00
I was born into the world with this representation,
38:00 --> 38:02
but I want a new representative."
38:02 --> 38:05
I don't want the life of Adam, which is the life of me,
38:05 --> 38:08
to represent me when God judges me.
38:08 --> 38:11
I want how Jesus lived and died to represent me instead.
38:11 --> 38:17
So I choose to say goodbye to my old representative,
38:17 --> 38:23
and I accept the representation of the one who was led into the wilderness
38:23 --> 38:29
to be tempted by the devil, overcame him on my behalf,
38:29 --> 38:34
and then that is faith.
38:34 --> 38:37
Remember when Abel laid that lamb on the altar in the Old Testament?
38:37 --> 38:43
That lamb represented the second Adam.
38:43 --> 38:47
Do you know what he was doing when he laid that lamb on the altar
38:47 --> 38:50
in the Old Testament?
38:50 --> 38:51
He was simply taking the book of Jesus' life,
38:51 --> 38:54
laying it up there on the judges' bench and saying,
38:54 --> 38:57
"God, I'm not worthy to be accepted,
38:57 --> 38:59
but will you be accepted on the basis of this lamb that died for me?"
38:59 --> 39:02
See how that works?
39:02 --> 39:04
That is how Jesus, through the Spirit, washes our sins away,
39:04 --> 39:10
because when I choose this representation,
39:10 --> 39:13
you can look all you want to. You'll find no sin,
39:13 --> 39:16
because the book of Jesus' life is sinless,
39:16 --> 39:20
and that sin's washed away,
39:20 --> 39:23
because when Jesus died, I died with Jesus,
39:23 --> 39:27
and all that sin has gone and been put in the tomb,
39:27 --> 39:30
and it's still there. It's gone, gone, gone.
39:30 --> 39:33
With that, we'll go ahead and stop today,
39:33 --> 39:35
and Lord willing, we'll take back up next week with Jesus' ministry.
39:35 --> 39:43
Okay?
39:43 --> 39:52
All right, let's pray.
39:52 --> 39:53
Father, we thank you so much for your precious Word,
39:53 --> 39:55
and I pray, Lord, that you'll give us a wonderful time in church next door this morning.
39:55 --> 39:59
Thank you to the people who came and the people who tuned in.
39:59 --> 40:02
Thank you most of all for your Son who came,
40:02 --> 40:06
and the free gift which is by grace given to all men that will receive it.
40:06 --> 40:11
In His name we pray. Amen.
40:11 --> 40:13
