Episode Transcript
So when we're in Genesis 3, we'll be in verse 15 this morning and remind you all of the first gospel message that was preached,
00:00 --> 00:09
and that was in the Garden of Eden.
00:09 --> 00:12
"And God said, 'And I will put in Mati,' he told the serpent, 'between thee and the woman,
00:12 --> 00:18
and between thy seed and her seed, it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.'
00:18 --> 00:24
So the serpent's head would be crushed, his kingdom would be destroyed by the seed of the woman, not the seed of the man."
00:24 --> 00:35
And this was the first hint of the Savior being born from a virgin.
00:35 --> 00:41
You see? Not the seed of a man, the seed of the woman.
00:41 --> 00:44
Every time you see a genealogy in the Bible, every time, it is reckoned according to the males in that family lineage,
00:44 --> 00:58
never according to the females.
00:58 --> 01:01
So it'll be Adam, Seth, on down and down and down like that.
01:01 --> 01:08
And so, and it'll talk about the sons and daughters that Adam and Eve had, but we don't even know any of their names.
01:08 --> 01:16
So, directly anyway.
01:16 --> 01:18
So, here saying the seed of the woman is unusual.
01:18 --> 01:25
And so what happened is, the devil used a woman to bring sin to the world.
01:25 --> 01:33
And now God would use a woman to bring a Savior to the world. You see?
01:33 --> 01:38
And so now, if you'll go ahead and turn to Matthew, chapter 1, Matthew, chapter 1, first book in the New Testament,
01:38 --> 01:46
we skipped the birth of Jesus Christ last week because before Jesus came on the scene, there was John the Baptist.
01:46 --> 01:53
And so to explain John's ministry, we introduced John, who introduced Jesus.
01:53 --> 02:00
And now, today, we're going to look at the birth of Christ and then move on into his ministry past the ministry of John.
02:00 --> 02:13
Matthew, chapter 1, verse 25, we're going to read the, I'm sorry, verse 1, we're going to read the entire chapter.
02:13 --> 02:21
"The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."
02:21 --> 02:28
So, here's what's happening. God promised Abraham that through him, the world would be blessed.
02:28 --> 02:36
So, the promised Savior is going to come through Abraham.
02:36 --> 02:39
God promised David that through him, the world would be ruled. See?
02:39 --> 02:46
David is a descendant of Abraham.
02:46 --> 02:49
And so, whoever saves the world and rules the world will have to be a descendant of Abraham, number one.
02:49 --> 02:57
Number two, they have to be a descendant of David.
02:57 --> 02:59
Specifically, they'll have to come from the tribe of Judah and not just the tribe of Judah,
02:59 --> 03:06
but the line of King David himself, a direct descendant.
03:06 --> 03:10
All right? And so, when we get to the New Testament, Matthew explains this exactly what happened with Jesus.
03:10 --> 03:18
Look here now, the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
03:18 --> 03:23
"Abraham begat Isaac, Isaac begat Jacob." These are people whose names we're familiar with.
03:23 --> 03:28
"Jacob begat Judas and his brethren, Judas begat Pharez and Zara of Thamar, and Pharez begat Esram,
03:28 --> 03:35
and Esram begat Aram, and Aram begat Amenadab, and Amenadab begat Nossin, and Nossin begat Selmon,
03:35 --> 03:41
and Selmon begat Boaz of Rehkub, and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth, and Obed begat Jesse,
03:41 --> 03:47
and Jesse begat David the king, and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias,
03:47 --> 03:55
and Solomon begat Robom, and Robom begat Abiah, and Abiah begat Asa, and Asa begat Josephed,
03:55 --> 04:01
and Josephed begat Joram, and Joram begat Ozias, and Ozias begat Jortham, and Jortham begat Achys,
04:01 --> 04:07
and Achys begat Isaac, and Isaacias begat Manassas, and Manassas begat Amen, and Amen begat Josias,
04:07 --> 04:15
and Josias begat Jokhanas, and his brethren about the time they were carried away to Babylon.
04:15 --> 04:25
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jokhanias begat Silathiel, and Silathiel begat Zerubbabel,
04:25 --> 04:32
and Zerubbabel begat Abud, and Abud begat Elachem, and Elachem begat Azar, and Azar begat Zadak,
04:32 --> 04:40
and Zadak begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud, and Elia begat Eliasir, and Eliazir begat Mathan,
04:40 --> 04:47
and Mathan begat Jacob, and Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who was called Christ.
04:47 --> 04:55
What a genealogy! But that is an incredible record. That's why we have the Bible. That's why we can trace,
04:55 --> 05:05
again, all the investigative work I did, any time the truth was given, detail was given.
05:05 --> 05:13
Detail that we could go and investigate and corroborate or prove, disprove the information we were given.
05:13 --> 05:22
When lies were given, detail was withheld.
05:22 --> 05:26
I rest a man the other day that brought marijuana into the courthouse.
05:26 --> 05:35
And it had been years since I had to rest anybody's. We almost never had anything happen like that at the courthouse.
05:35 --> 05:44
But he reminded me of so many other people that I had arrested in the past.
05:44 --> 05:52
You would ask them their name, and when they don't want you to know their name, they do like that.
05:52 --> 06:03
You say, "What's your name?" "My name's Richard."
06:03 --> 06:08
You say, "What are you saying?" "What's your date of birth?" "Well, it's just simply..." That's what they do.
06:08 --> 06:16
And they act like they're giving you information and not giving you information.
06:16 --> 06:20
And it's cumbersome until you finally get down to it and finally get who they are.
06:20 --> 06:27
And that's just the way people are. And they withhold data.
06:27 --> 06:33
They don't want you to know because there's something they're trying to hide.
06:33 --> 06:37
And with the gospel of Jesus Christ, there's not data withheld.
06:37 --> 06:43
For some people, it may be too much information.
06:43 --> 06:46
It was a lot.
06:46 --> 06:48
It was a lot, wasn't it? It's a lot.
06:48 --> 06:51
Say that fast ten times.
06:51 --> 06:53
Yeah. But you know what? I'm glad it's there.
06:53 --> 06:57
That is historical, genealogical documentation.
06:57 --> 07:03
Proof.
07:03 --> 07:04
Proof that the Savior came from Abraham, that the Savior came from David,
07:04 --> 07:12
just like God said He would.
07:12 --> 07:16
Now, if you'll go ahead and look here in verse 18.
07:16 --> 07:22
"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise, or in this manner.
07:22 --> 07:26
When as His mother Mary was a spouse to Joseph, before they came together,"
07:26 --> 07:31
that is, before they had sexual union with each other,
07:31 --> 07:34
"she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
07:34 --> 07:38
A virgin had a child that was given to her by the Holy Spirit of God."
07:38 --> 07:45
The same Holy Spirit that created the animals, that gave light,
07:45 --> 07:52
that caused the grass in the field to grow, put a baby in Mary's womb.
07:52 --> 08:00
"Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example,
08:00 --> 08:05
was minded to put her away privately."
08:05 --> 08:07
He thought, "Oh, my wife has a child."
08:07 --> 08:10
And it wasn't me.
08:10 --> 08:14
I'm not going to humiliate in front of everyone.
08:14 --> 08:17
I'm just going about my way.
08:17 --> 08:20
Verse 20, "But while he thought on these things, behold,
08:20 --> 08:23
the aims of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
08:23 --> 08:26
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee, Mary, thy wife,
08:26 --> 08:31
for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost."
08:31 --> 08:35
It's of God.
08:35 --> 08:37
"And she shall bring forth the Son, and thou shall call his name Jesus."
08:37 --> 08:42
Remember, that's the New Testament name for Joshua.
08:42 --> 08:45
"For he shall save his people from their sins."
08:45 --> 08:48
The purpose that Jesus was conceived in the womb
08:48 --> 08:53
and was born into the world was to save people from their sins.
08:53 --> 08:58
Not to save Jews from the Romans, not to save people from hunger,
08:58 --> 09:04
not to build houses for people to live in.
09:04 --> 09:07
The world can do that.
09:07 --> 09:09
But the church has a specific message.
09:09 --> 09:12
It's not to feed and clothe the hungry and the poor,
09:12 --> 09:16
but it's to tell people how they can be saved from their sins,
09:16 --> 09:19
which is what Jesus came to do.
09:19 --> 09:22
Verse 22, "Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled,
09:22 --> 09:26
which was spoken to the Lord by the prophet."
09:26 --> 09:28
Now, Matthew's going to quote an Old Testament prophet.
09:28 --> 09:32
Verse 23, "The prophet said, 'Behold, a virgin shall be with child,
09:32 --> 09:37
and shall bring forth the Son, they shall call his name Emmanuel.'"
09:37 --> 09:42
Now, don't get confused when it says,
09:42 --> 09:45
"You'll call his name Jesus, and his name be called Emmanuel."
09:45 --> 09:50
There's many names for God in the Old and New Testament.
09:50 --> 09:55
And so names here mean something.
09:55 --> 09:57
When we think of names today, when a woman thinks of names,
09:57 --> 10:00
a lot of times the parents don't even care what the name means.
10:00 --> 10:06
They're thinking of syllables. They're thinking of how it sounds.
10:06 --> 10:10
But names mean something. At least they should.
10:10 --> 10:14
And so you'll call his name Emmanuel.
10:14 --> 10:18
We'll look back in your text, which being interpreted is God with us.
10:18 --> 10:21
E-man-u-l. There's "el" again, God.
10:21 --> 10:24
E-man-u-l, God with us. That's what that name means.
10:24 --> 10:28
And so what he's saying is, "Yeah, you'll call him Jesus,
10:28 --> 10:33
but he'll be called Emmanuel in the sense that even though you may say,
10:33 --> 10:37
'Jesus, I love you,' when you spoke of him, you would say,
10:37 --> 10:42
'He's Emmanuel. He's God with us.' God came in the flesh."
10:42 --> 10:47
Look now in verse 24, "Then Joseph, being raised from sleep,
10:47 --> 10:51
did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife."
10:51 --> 10:54
Look here now, "And you heard not," in other words,
10:54 --> 10:57
"they had no sexual relations till she had brought forth her firstborn son,
10:57 --> 11:01
and he called his name Jesus."
11:01 --> 11:05
Now, that prophet that Matthew's quoting is Isaiah.
11:05 --> 11:11
And in Isaiah 7.14, if you're taking notes,
11:11 --> 11:15
the Bible says, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign,
11:15 --> 11:18
behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
11:18 --> 11:22
and shall call his name Emmanuel."
11:22 --> 11:25
So we're looking at a virgin.
11:25 --> 11:31
Oops.
11:31 --> 11:33
Let me bring it down just a little bit.
11:33 --> 11:41
"A virgin conceives and bears a son."
11:41 --> 11:45
Luke, we're in Matthew, turn to Luke now.
11:45 --> 11:48
Matthew, Mark, Luke, just turn to your right.
11:48 --> 11:52
A couple books, Matthew, then Mark, then Luke.
11:52 --> 11:56
Good morning to those who just tuned in.
11:56 --> 12:04
I remember listening to a man one day that was in seminary.
12:04 --> 12:12
He was about to get his Master's of Divinity,
12:12 --> 12:15
which is a lot of hours to get one of those.
12:15 --> 12:17
He was about to get his Master's of Divinity almost through.
12:17 --> 12:21
And back then there was a real debate over whether or not
12:21 --> 12:26
Jesus actually was born from a virgin.
12:26 --> 12:29
After all, that would be a miracle, wouldn't it?
12:29 --> 12:31
And that's kind of hard for some people to believe,
12:31 --> 12:34
because there's people today who are like the Sadducees.
12:34 --> 12:37
They don't believe in stuff like that.
12:37 --> 12:40
So I asked him, I said, "Do you believe in the virgin birth of Christ?
12:40 --> 12:45
He's in a bad dissimilar."
12:45 --> 12:46
He said, "Well, I personally do,
12:46 --> 12:48
but he didn't think there was anything worth arguing over."
12:48 --> 12:52
Well, that shows you how little he knows about the Gospel.
12:52 --> 12:55
The virgin birth of Christ is critical.
12:55 --> 12:58
It is necessary for our salvation.
12:58 --> 13:03
So let's go ahead and look here in Luke chapter 1.
13:03 --> 13:06
Let's look in verse 31 through 35.
13:06 --> 13:09
And let's look and see what the angel told Mary.
13:09 --> 13:12
"And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb,
13:12 --> 13:15
and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus.
13:15 --> 13:18
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest.
13:18 --> 13:24
And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father, David."
13:24 --> 13:29
Now, that's interesting.
13:29 --> 13:30
He's the Son of the Highest.
13:30 --> 13:32
Who's the highest?
13:32 --> 13:33
That's God.
13:33 --> 13:34
But he has a father named David.
13:34 --> 13:36
So according to his body, he's a descendant from David.
13:36 --> 13:43
But according to his person, his soul, and his spirit,
13:43 --> 13:48
he's a descendant from God directly.
13:48 --> 13:51
Okay?
13:51 --> 13:52
And so you have a man, you have God becoming a man,
13:52 --> 13:57
but at the same time, God bypasses Adam.
13:57 --> 14:04
He does not descend directly from Adam.
14:04 --> 14:06
So let's look here now.
14:06 --> 14:08
Verse 33, "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever."
14:08 --> 14:12
Now, remember all the prophecies where God would give the land to Israel forever,
14:12 --> 14:17
where David's son would rule forever, and thus we would have to live forever.
14:17 --> 14:24
All of this is now coming to pass here through Jesus.
14:24 --> 14:27
God's saying, "This is how this is going to be done."
14:27 --> 14:30
Verse 33, "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever.
14:30 --> 14:35
And of his kingdom there shall be no end."
14:35 --> 14:37
Praise God.
14:37 --> 14:38
"Then said Mary unto the angel,
14:38 --> 14:40
How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"
14:40 --> 14:42
In other words, how am I going to have a son?
14:42 --> 14:44
I've never had relations with a man.
14:44 --> 14:49
Verse 35, "And the angel answered and said unto her,
14:49 --> 14:51
The Holy Ghost, that is the Spirit of God, shall come upon thee,
14:51 --> 14:55
and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee.
14:55 --> 14:58
Therefore also that holy thing, holy thing,
14:58 --> 15:02
which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God."
15:02 --> 15:06
God is going to be the father of this child.
15:06 --> 15:10
God's spirit would allow Mary to conceive with no sexual relation,
15:10 --> 15:19
but God would be the father,
15:19 --> 15:23
and yet through Mary, God would take on human flesh.
15:23 --> 15:30
So God would be his father, yet legally,
15:30 --> 15:37
he would be a descendant of these people, you see.
15:37 --> 15:42
And Mary, Joseph, there's going to be a line coming down here
15:42 --> 15:48
that he's going to actually descend from Abraham.
15:48 --> 15:53
He's going to descend from David.
15:53 --> 15:56
But the child's going to be holy.
15:56 --> 15:58
The child's going to be the Son of God, not the Son of Adam.
15:58 --> 16:01
Now, that's very important.
16:01 --> 16:03
Remember last week when we looked at Jesus going into the wilderness
16:03 --> 16:09
to be tempted of the devil.
16:09 --> 16:11
And I told you last week that there were two atoms.
16:11 --> 16:16
Remember, there is the first atom who was tempted in a garden
16:16 --> 16:20
when he could fully eat.
16:20 --> 16:22
There was the second atom, the last atom that was tempted in the wilderness
16:22 --> 16:25
when he hadn't eaten for 40 days.
16:25 --> 16:27
The first atom did not represent the human race correctly
16:27 --> 16:31
and brought us into sin and death.
16:31 --> 16:33
The second atom came and did everything God said to do
16:33 --> 16:36
so that as we were born the first time into the first atom's disobedience and death,
16:36 --> 16:41
we could be born again the second time by accepting Christ
16:41 --> 16:44
into his obedience and eternal life.
16:44 --> 16:49
So we have the Son of God coming through Mary,
16:49 --> 16:55
not inherited the sin and death passed down from Adam.
16:55 --> 17:03
Now, let's go ahead and look here if you would in the Gospel of Luke.
17:03 --> 17:09
Luke chapter 3.
17:09 --> 17:13
Luke chapter 3.
17:13 --> 17:16
Just move a couple chapters to your right.
17:16 --> 17:23
Man, this is fun.
17:23 --> 17:25
In Jesus himself began to be about 30 years of age,
17:25 --> 17:30
being as was supposed.
17:30 --> 17:32
You see that, "as was supposed"?
17:32 --> 17:35
In the Greek, that means "considered by law."
17:35 --> 17:41
Considered by law.
17:41 --> 17:44
Huh?
17:44 --> 17:46
I'm sorry.
17:46 --> 17:47
Luke 3 verse 23.
17:47 --> 17:53
You all should have known that.
17:53 --> 17:54
No, I'm kidding.
17:54 --> 17:56
I did, I got excited.
17:56 --> 17:57
Luke 3, 23.
17:57 --> 18:01
In Jesus himself began to be about 30 years of age,
18:01 --> 18:04
being as was supposed.
18:04 --> 18:06
That means to be considered by law.
18:06 --> 18:08
The Son of Joseph.
18:08 --> 18:10
So legally he's considered the Son of Joseph,
18:10 --> 18:13
which was the son of Hailey,
18:13 --> 18:15
which was the son of Matthew,
18:15 --> 18:17
which was the son of Levi,
18:17 --> 18:19
which was the son of Melchized,
18:19 --> 18:20
which was the son of Johnna,
18:20 --> 18:21
which was the son of Joseph,
18:21 --> 18:23
which was the son of Mattathias,
18:23 --> 18:25
which was the son of Amos,
18:25 --> 18:26
which was the son of Nahum,
18:26 --> 18:27
which was the son of Esli,
18:27 --> 18:29
which was the son of Naj,
18:29 --> 18:30
which was the son of Moth,
18:30 --> 18:32
which was the son of Mattathias,
18:32 --> 18:34
which was the son of Samaya,
18:34 --> 18:35
which was the son of Joseph,
18:35 --> 18:37
which was the son of Judah,
18:37 --> 18:38
which was the son of Johanna,
18:38 --> 18:40
which was the son of Raisha,
18:40 --> 18:42
which was the son of Zerobah,
18:42 --> 18:43
which was the son of Salathel,
18:43 --> 18:45
which was the son of Neri,
18:45 --> 18:46
which was the son of Melchized,
18:46 --> 18:48
which was the son of Adi,
18:48 --> 18:49
which was the son of Qasim,
18:49 --> 18:51
which was the son of Elmatim,
18:51 --> 18:53
which was the son of Er,
18:53 --> 18:54
which was the son of Josie,
18:54 --> 18:56
which was the son of Eleazar,
18:56 --> 18:58
which was the son of Joram,
18:58 --> 18:59
which was the son of Matthet,
18:59 --> 19:01
which was the son of Levi,
19:01 --> 19:02
which was the son of Simeon,
19:02 --> 19:04
which was the son of Judah,
19:04 --> 19:06
which was the son of Joseph,
19:06 --> 19:07
which was the son of Johnna,
19:07 --> 19:09
which was the son of Eliacim,
19:09 --> 19:11
which was the son of Malaya,
19:11 --> 19:12
which was the son of Manon,
19:12 --> 19:14
which was the son of Mattathah,
19:14 --> 19:16
which was the son of Nathan,
19:16 --> 19:17
which was the son of David,
19:17 --> 19:19
which was the son of Jesse,
19:19 --> 19:21
which was the son of Obed,
19:21 --> 19:22
which was the son of Boaz,
19:22 --> 19:24
which was the son of Salman,
19:24 --> 19:25
which was the son of Nathan,
19:25 --> 19:27
which was the son of Amenadab,
19:27 --> 19:29
which was the son of Aram,
19:29 --> 19:30
which was the son of Asram,
19:30 --> 19:32
which was the son of Phares,
19:32 --> 19:34
which was the son of Judah,
19:34 --> 19:35
which was the son of Jacob,
19:35 --> 19:37
which was the son of Isaac,
19:37 --> 19:38
which was the son of Abraham,
19:38 --> 19:40
which was the son of Thara,
19:40 --> 19:41
which was the son of Nachir,
19:41 --> 19:43
which was the son of Saruk,
19:43 --> 19:45
which was the son of Raghu,
19:45 --> 19:46
which was the son of Phalek,
19:46 --> 19:48
which was the son of Haber,
19:48 --> 19:49
which was the son of Salah,
19:49 --> 19:51
which was the son of Canaan,
19:51 --> 19:53
which was the son of Arphaxad,
19:53 --> 19:55
which was the son of Sam,
19:55 --> 19:56
which was the son of Noah,
19:56 --> 19:58
which was the son of Lamech,
19:58 --> 20:00
which was the son of Methuselah,
20:00 --> 20:02
which was the son of Enoch,
20:02 --> 20:03
which was the son of Jared,
20:03 --> 20:05
which was the son of Malalael,
20:05 --> 20:06
which was the son of Canaan,
20:06 --> 20:08
which was the son of Enos,
20:08 --> 20:09
which was the son of Seth,
20:09 --> 20:11
which was the son of Adam,
20:11 --> 20:13
sit with me now,
20:13 --> 20:14
which was the son of God.
20:14 --> 20:18
Ah!
20:18 --> 20:20
What a genealogy!
20:20 --> 20:24
Now all of these genealogies,
20:24 --> 20:25
sometimes it may go through Joseph,
20:25 --> 20:27
sometimes it may go through Mary's line,
20:27 --> 20:29
but Joseph would always be substituted
20:29 --> 20:31
for the line,
20:31 --> 20:32
his father-in-law being called his father.
20:32 --> 20:34
But look here now,
20:34 --> 20:36
Adam, the first Adam,
20:36 --> 20:38
is the son of God.
20:38 --> 20:42
He didn't descend from anybody but God, right?
20:42 --> 20:46
Now he wasn't God,
20:46 --> 20:48
but he got his life directly from God
20:48 --> 20:51
and descended from no one else.
20:51 --> 20:53
So having got his life directly from God,
20:53 --> 20:55
Adam was born as the son of God, sinless,
20:55 --> 20:58
no sin passed down to the first Adam,
20:58 --> 21:01
son of God.
21:01 --> 21:04
Now through a virgin,
21:04 --> 21:08
we have another son of God.
21:08 --> 21:17
See how this works?
21:17 --> 21:19
No sin passed down to him as well.
21:19 --> 21:22
The only way it could happen is through a virgin.
21:22 --> 21:25
It had to be,
21:25 --> 21:27
God couldn't just come down,
21:27 --> 21:29
miraculously take on human flesh like us,
21:29 --> 21:32
beard like us, and then die for us.
21:32 --> 21:35
He had to be one of us because the human race
21:35 --> 21:38
had to overcome.
21:38 --> 21:40
The human race had to win.
21:40 --> 21:43
So he took on Adam's flesh
21:43 --> 21:48
without taking on Adam's nature and parenthood.
21:48 --> 21:52
And so now the first Adam,
21:52 --> 21:55
the second Adam,
21:55 --> 21:57
both sons of God in that respect,
21:57 --> 22:00
and now as one,
22:00 --> 22:03
represented all men to sin and death.
22:03 --> 22:07
So this one would represent all men to righteousness.
22:07 --> 22:13
And since this son of God is not just the son of God,
22:13 --> 22:23
he's God the son.
22:23 --> 22:27
He cannot sin. He will not sin. He's perfect.
22:27 --> 22:31
He's going to represent us righteously.
22:31 --> 22:34
All right?
22:34 --> 22:36
There were two Adams, two sons of God.
22:36 --> 22:38
The first brought sin and death to the world,
22:38 --> 22:40
to his offspring.
22:40 --> 22:42
The second is going to bring righteousness
22:42 --> 22:45
to the world through his offspring.
22:45 --> 22:49
So you have to be born again.
22:49 --> 22:51
Now if Christ
22:51 --> 22:55
had not been born of a virgin,
22:55 --> 22:58
then he would have inherited Adam's corrupt bloodline.
22:58 --> 23:03
Remember what we read last week in Romans chapter 5.
23:03 --> 23:06
"By one man sin entered into the world in death by sin,
23:06 --> 23:09
so death was passed upon all men,
23:09 --> 23:12
for that all have sinned."
23:12 --> 23:14
Well, Adam couldn't pass sin on to Jesus
23:14 --> 23:17
because Jesus is the son of God.
23:17 --> 23:20
If Jesus was not born of a virgin,
23:20 --> 23:23
we would not have a sinless substitute.
23:23 --> 23:27
And if you don't have a sinless substitute,
23:27 --> 23:31
then you're going to have another sinner just like you.
23:31 --> 23:35
You have no Savior.
23:35 --> 23:37
With no sinless substitute, there's no salvation.
23:37 --> 23:40
God thought of everything,
23:40 --> 23:42
and when man looks at things like this and he says,
23:42 --> 23:44
"Oh, well, we didn't have to have a Savior born of a virgin."
23:44 --> 23:51
It didn't have to be like that.
23:51 --> 23:53
It was just a poetic license,
23:53 --> 23:56
or it was just literary license.
23:56 --> 23:58
It wasn't really born of a virgin.
23:58 --> 24:00
Then you spoil the entire gospel,
24:00 --> 24:03
and you're calling the prophets,
24:03 --> 24:05
and you're calling God a liar.
24:05 --> 24:06
But when you see it play out like this,
24:06 --> 24:09
the Old Testament makes sense.
24:09 --> 24:11
Your salvation is secure.
24:11 --> 24:13
Who wants to rest on something that Adam gave us?
24:13 --> 24:17
Not me.
24:17 --> 24:19
Like Adam could say, "Well, I'll have a son that's better than me."
24:19 --> 24:23
Well, everything came from Adam.
24:23 --> 24:26
We're no better than our source.
24:26 --> 24:28
Jesus came from God. He was God,
24:28 --> 24:31
and he brought us righteousness.
24:31 --> 24:34
So that's what we learned about last week.
24:34 --> 24:37
If you'll turn to the book of Hebrews, please.
24:37 --> 24:40
Look at Hebrews.
24:40 --> 25:00
It's one of the last books in the Bible.
25:00 --> 25:03
Hebrews. Yeah, did you find it?
25:03 --> 25:06
Yeah, Chapter 1.
25:06 --> 25:10
We can... Yeah, we'll start with Chapter 1.
25:10 --> 25:20
Hebrews is a special book.
25:20 --> 25:26
It's written to compare the Old Testament to the New.
25:26 --> 25:34
Well, they had all those animal sacrifices in the Old Testament.
25:34 --> 25:37
The book of Hebrews is explaining, "Look, they were like credit cards.
25:37 --> 25:43
They weren't the real payment.
25:43 --> 25:45
You can't trust in plastic forever."
25:45 --> 25:49
I mean, you have to understand.
25:49 --> 25:51
Anybody using a credit card today has to understand
25:51 --> 25:56
that the plastic will never satisfy the person you owe.
25:56 --> 26:02
The only thing that's going to make that plastic good
26:02 --> 26:05
is a real cash payment that comes at the end.
26:05 --> 26:08
In the same way, these sacrifices in the Old Testament,
26:08 --> 26:12
they weren't going to satisfy God.
26:12 --> 26:14
Animals can't represent man for real.
26:14 --> 26:17
They can only represent the Son of God
26:17 --> 26:20
who would represent man for real
26:20 --> 26:22
because he would be man, yet he would be God,
26:22 --> 26:25
and he would be a sinless substitute to die in our place
26:25 --> 26:29
like the animals died in their place,
26:29 --> 26:31
and we could be free.
26:31 --> 26:33
Look here now in Hebrews 1, verse 1,
26:33 --> 26:35
"God, who at sundry times in diverse manners,
26:35 --> 26:39
spake in time paths unto the fathers by the prophets,
26:39 --> 26:42
hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,
26:42 --> 26:48
whom he hath appointed heir of all things."
26:48 --> 26:52
Man, aren't you glad he appointed him heir of all things?
26:52 --> 26:55
If Jesus inherits everything, and we're Jesus' offspring,
26:55 --> 27:00
born again from him, then what do we inherit?
27:00 --> 27:05
We inherit everything, right?
27:05 --> 27:08
- Not soon. - Soon.
27:08 --> 27:10
Huh?
27:10 --> 27:11
- Not now. - Do we have a question? Go ahead.
27:11 --> 27:13
- No, no, no, I was just thinking. I was just thinking away.
27:13 --> 27:16
- Okay, sure, sure.
27:16 --> 27:19
"By whom also he made the worlds,"
27:19 --> 27:22
verse 3, "who, being the brightness of his glory,
27:22 --> 27:25
and the express image of his person,
27:25 --> 27:28
and upholding all things by the word of his power?"
27:28 --> 27:31
In other words, Jesus created the world,
27:31 --> 27:34
and he upholds, that means he keeps everything going
27:34 --> 27:37
by the word of his power.
27:37 --> 27:39
There's a certain amount of power that keeps the world spinning around.
27:39 --> 27:43
There's a certain amount of power that keeps the sun shining,
27:43 --> 27:46
a certain amount of power that keeps everything held in place
27:46 --> 27:50
until all the elements just don't fall apart,
27:50 --> 27:53
and all that's upheld by the word of Christ.
27:53 --> 27:57
So he says, "Upholding all things by the word of his power,
27:57 --> 28:00
when he had by himself purged our sins,
28:00 --> 28:05
sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high."
28:05 --> 28:12
Man, here's the Son of God who created the world.
28:12 --> 28:16
When we're reading in the book of Genesis,
28:16 --> 28:18
"Let there be light," that is Jesus saying, "Let there be light."
28:18 --> 28:23
When we see, "Let the grass and the trees come up upon the land,"
28:23 --> 28:28
"let the fish multiply in the waters,"
28:28 --> 28:31
"let the birds in the air, fly in the air,"
28:31 --> 28:35
"let this make cattle to multiply on the ground,"
28:35 --> 28:38
"let us make man in our image," all of that's Jesus.
28:38 --> 28:43
And then finally, Jesus comes, the one who upholds the entire world,
28:43 --> 28:50
the perfect, righteous, holy God becoming flesh for us.
28:50 --> 28:58
He then purges our sins by himself.
28:58 --> 29:04
I like that, by himself.
29:04 --> 29:07
No help from you, no help from me.
29:07 --> 29:12
He did it all by himself, so our salvation is all about Jesus.
29:12 --> 29:16
So here's what happens.
29:16 --> 29:19
We have Adam with all these genealogies,
29:19 --> 29:23
and you know what? We eventually make it in that genealogy, don't we?
29:23 --> 29:27
Jesus made it into that genealogy legally.
29:27 --> 29:31
We make it into that genealogy legally and biologically.
29:31 --> 29:35
And so here we are, sin, descendants,
29:35 --> 29:46
and eventually, you.
29:46 --> 29:52
You're in that line of genealogy.
29:52 --> 29:57
Now, Jesus was born back here
29:57 --> 30:13
from a virgin entering into that ancestral line.
30:13 --> 30:19
By doing so, he represents you.
30:19 --> 30:25
Jesus then goes to the cross.
30:25 --> 30:37
He dies as you.
30:37 --> 30:40
He dies in your place.
30:40 --> 30:42
Purges your sin.
30:42 --> 30:44
You know what purge means? Just put away.
30:44 --> 30:47
After he dies, when he died, you died, he represents you.
30:47 --> 30:56
He then goes to a tomb.
30:56 --> 31:03
When he went to the tomb, you went to the tomb.
31:03 --> 31:09
Now, when you're buried, Adam is dead.
31:09 --> 31:16
He's history. He's gone.
31:16 --> 31:19
After three days, he then is raised to the throne of God, who he is.
31:19 --> 31:31
And when he was raised, who else was raised? We were raised.
31:31 --> 31:37
Now, so you see now, through his birth, he takes on your identity.
31:37 --> 31:47
His death, he takes on your sin.
31:47 --> 31:51
His burial, he purges your sin.
31:51 --> 31:54
His resurrection, he then takes you from here to here.
31:54 --> 32:00
And now you're in a totally different line,
32:00 --> 32:05
totally different family, the family of God.
32:05 --> 32:10
He by himself purged our sins and sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
32:10 --> 32:16
Absolutely amazing.
32:16 --> 32:18
The Bible says that we are seated together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
32:18 --> 32:26
We are.
32:26 --> 32:29
This is a master design.
32:29 --> 32:33
There's no way man could have come up with this.
32:33 --> 32:37
But the death, burial and resurrection of Christ in his virgin birth,
32:37 --> 32:41
everything is necessary for our salvation.
32:41 --> 32:45
And that's why we wanted to make sure and go over the virgin birth of Christ today.
32:45 --> 32:50
Yes, sir.
32:50 --> 32:51
Okay, so it takes three days to three days to raise back up.
32:51 --> 32:56
Is that a particular number for a reason or did you take three days?
32:56 --> 33:01
That's a great question.
33:01 --> 33:05
So the question was, if you can't hear online,
33:05 --> 33:08
it took three days for him to raise back up.
33:08 --> 33:11
Is that a particular number or did you just take three days?
33:11 --> 33:14
First of all, and I know you know this, but to clarify,
33:14 --> 33:18
it didn't actually take him three days as if,
33:18 --> 33:22
as if he would, you know, couldn't come out sooner or something.
33:22 --> 33:27
But he took three days and yes, that is a specific number.
33:27 --> 33:33
When you go back to the book of Exodus,
33:33 --> 33:39
and again, this is beautiful.
33:39 --> 33:41
I love teaching the Bible because it's so tied together.
33:41 --> 33:45
They, Moses, when Moses first came to Pharaoh,
33:45 --> 33:50
he says, "Thus says the Lord,
33:50 --> 33:53
and let my people go three days journey into the wilderness."
33:53 --> 33:59
Three days journey.
33:59 --> 34:01
Three, of course, three is the number of God,
34:01 --> 34:05
but the Father sent the Holy Spirit.
34:05 --> 34:08
But three also being three days journey,
34:08 --> 34:11
it's a number of complete separation.
34:11 --> 34:14
Three days journey is the complete separation.
34:14 --> 34:18
And so when Jesus was in the grave for three days,
34:18 --> 34:23
it shows a complete separation of you from Adam's race.
34:23 --> 34:32
A perfect death.
34:32 --> 34:35
He didn't slumber in the grave.
34:35 --> 34:38
He didn't go in there and go, "Oh, my side hurts."
34:38 --> 34:41
And then come back out and say, "Well, I'm feeling better now."
34:41 --> 34:44
A complete death.
34:44 --> 34:46
At the same time, he didn't stay past three days
34:46 --> 34:51
because the Bible prophesied in the Old Testament
34:51 --> 34:55
that he would not see corruption,
34:55 --> 34:57
that he would not remain dead and see corruption.
34:57 --> 35:01
There was a time, in fact, let me turn it real quick.
35:01 --> 35:05
We've got enough time here.
35:05 --> 35:07
Let me look this up and then we'll close.
35:07 --> 35:13
Let me see here.
35:13 --> 35:19
Turn to the Gospel of John, chapter 11.
35:19 --> 35:29
Yeah, John chapter 11.
35:29 --> 35:35
Now, in John chapter 11, a man named Lazarus had died.
35:35 --> 35:42
Jesus loved Lazarus.
35:42 --> 35:47
If you look here now, Lazarus had a sister named Mary,
35:47 --> 35:52
different Mary than Jesus' mother.
35:52 --> 35:56
Verse 32, John 11, 32.
35:56 --> 36:00
"Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him,
36:00 --> 36:02
she fell down at his feet, saying to him,
36:02 --> 36:04
'Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died,
36:04 --> 36:07
or my brother wouldn't have died if you would have been here.'"
36:07 --> 36:10
Verse 33, "When Jesus therefore saw her weeping,
36:10 --> 36:13
and the Jews also weeping, which came whether he groaned
36:13 --> 36:16
in the spirit and was troubled, and said,
36:16 --> 36:18
'Where have you laid him?'
36:18 --> 36:20
They said unto him, 'Come and see.'
36:20 --> 36:22
Jesus wept.
36:22 --> 36:23
Then said the Jews, 'Behold how he loved him.'
36:23 --> 36:26
And some of them said, 'Could not this man,
36:26 --> 36:28
which opened the eyes of the blind,
36:28 --> 36:30
have called that even this man should not have died?'
36:30 --> 36:33
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself,
36:33 --> 36:36
cometh to the grave, it was a cave,
36:36 --> 36:39
and the stone lay upon it.
36:39 --> 36:42
Jesus said, 'Take away the stone.'
36:42 --> 36:45
Now, you're going to a cemetery.
36:45 --> 36:48
Jesus says, 'Roll the stone away from the grave and side.'
36:48 --> 36:55
He says, 'Roll away the stone,
36:55 --> 36:57
Martha the sister of him that was dead,
36:57 --> 36:59
said unto him, 'Lord, by this time he what?'
36:59 --> 37:03
Stake hath.'
37:03 --> 37:06
Watch this now, 'For he had been dead,' how long?
37:06 --> 37:09
Four days.
37:09 --> 37:12
So, 'Lord, while we roll away the stone by this time,
37:12 --> 37:17
he stinks.'
37:17 --> 37:19
It's been four days.
37:19 --> 37:24
He's rotten. He's corrupted.
37:24 --> 37:28
So you see another reason,
37:28 --> 37:30
Jesus stayed three days for complete separation
37:30 --> 37:33
to show he is truly, in fact, dead.
37:33 --> 37:38
So we truly, in fact, died to our sins,
37:38 --> 37:41
died to our relationship with Adam.
37:41 --> 37:43
A complete separation,
37:43 --> 37:45
as the Israelites were completely separated from Egypt
37:45 --> 37:48
and their bondage, we're completely separated from Adam
37:48 --> 37:51
and our bondage to sin and death.
37:51 --> 37:53
Complete separation. However,
37:53 --> 37:57
he did not lay in the grave long enough
37:57 --> 38:00
to rot and stink.
38:00 --> 38:02
Because the Bible prophesied,
38:02 --> 38:04
'Thou shalt not leave my soul in hell.'
38:04 --> 38:07
Hell means death.
38:07 --> 38:08
'Thou shalt not suffer,
38:08 --> 38:10
thou unholy one to see corruption.'
38:10 --> 38:13
And he didn't.
38:13 --> 38:15
He actually wasn't in the grave,
38:15 --> 38:17
from what I can tell,
38:17 --> 38:19
72 hours.
38:19 --> 38:23
But shorter than that, because the Jews,
38:23 --> 38:26
reckoned by law, day nights.
38:26 --> 38:30
So when you look at,
38:30 --> 38:32
you know, you look at when he went into the grave
38:32 --> 38:35
and when he came out of the grave,
38:35 --> 38:37
some people have trouble with that.
38:37 --> 38:38
They say, 'Man, it didn't look like he was actually under 72 hours.'
38:38 --> 38:41
But they have day nights, because they reckon,
38:41 --> 38:45
we reckon from, you know, midnight to midnight.
38:45 --> 38:49
They don't.
38:49 --> 38:50
They reckon their time differently.
38:50 --> 38:52
And part of the whole is reckoned as the whole.
38:52 --> 38:57
And so if you get in the grave at the latter part of one day,
38:57 --> 39:03
then it counts legally as the whole day,
39:03 --> 39:05
and the second day,
39:05 --> 39:07
and then you get out early the third day,
39:07 --> 39:09
it counts as three days and three nights.
39:09 --> 39:12
Or three night days is what it's called in the Jewish history.
39:12 --> 39:16
But that's a whole other thing.
39:16 --> 39:18
I just threw that in there,
39:18 --> 39:19
because I didn't want you all to later get on that
39:19 --> 39:21
and get confused about it.
39:21 --> 39:23
And so, anyway, yes, the three days means something,
39:23 --> 39:26
a complete separation.
39:26 --> 39:28
And I tell you what, those who trust in Christ as their Savior,
39:28 --> 39:33
those who look to the cross for their salvation,
39:33 --> 39:36
there is a complete separation from your sins
39:36 --> 39:40
as far as the east is from the west.
39:40 --> 39:43
Buried in the deepest sea, yes, that is enough for me.
39:43 --> 39:47
My sins are gone, as the song says.
39:47 --> 39:49
With that, we'll go ahead and stop.
39:49 --> 39:51
Thank God for a sinless substitute.
39:51 --> 39:55
Born of a virgin.
39:55 --> 39:57
Now, because Jesus was the Son of God,
39:57 --> 40:01
those who trust in Him are called the sons of God as well.
40:01 --> 40:06
Lord William will take back up with Jesus' ministry
40:06 --> 40:09
and the calling of the apostles next Sunday.
40:09 --> 40:14
All right?
40:14 --> 40:16
We'll see you next door.
40:16 --> 40:18
